Next area of conflict – the Arctic

I have been reading, and seen programmes recently, on the Arctic.  It seems that Russia in particular is beginning to build up naval bases all along the Arctic and build up a military presence there so that they can try and control the Arctic later.  Apparently, amongst the other possible reasons to do this, is that it will allow much faster access for commercial ships to travel the oceans.  What I found astounding is that these bases that are all built on ice actually move quite a bit each day, because the ice moves.  So, for example, a pilot who has to fly in from one day to the next can be given a different destination, as much as 14km away from the previous day’s destination, to land!  The base has not moved, just the ice on which it is built has moved.  Russia recently opened a new base which holds up to 150 soldiers in a special temporary structure on the ice, and has announced that they plan four more structures like it.  It is a little bit worrying that they seem to think, or are trying to, claim some sort of ownership of the Arctic and it shows you that while the Cold War is over, you can never ignore the Russian Bear and what they are up to.

I am sure Russia thought all aspects through before they started the project, it will be interesting to see how they have planned around these sorts of glitches

This is very scary to think they can just take owner ship but will they be able to survive.

Once again a very smart move by Russia. The Arctic has become even more vulnerable as climate change is resulting in the melting of the polar ice caps , making it so much easier for countries to exploit the abundant natural resources in the region and sail through it.

Sjoe this is now interesting... But did they take Global Warming in consideration? I don't think they are that stupid to not have, so maybe they know something we don't and is actually busy with something far more complex than we can imagine. Only time will tell what they really are up to over there.

Very interesting and a scary taught to! They are definitely ahead of everyone but then again with Global warming is it really a good idea.

On the face of it, it doesn't seem like a well-thought out plan-with shifting bases and melting ice etc. I doubt though, that Russia did not carefully consider all these options before building bases and their reasons therefore outweigh the risks. Maybe the true intention will be more apparent in years to come.

I've watched many TV shows showing us how the arctic is taking its toll from Global warming. So I wouldn't think why any man would want to take chances like this there.

Cant believe how they think they own the Arctic I mean really. And what about the global warming if that ice decides to melt then all of them is going to have a problem. I don't understand how some people think. It is not going to be cold there forever.

Obviously they know something we don't know, this is very scary. This is a very start move on them

Have they considered how this will affect the natural environment ? I am all for technology advancing but at the expense of nature and the environment

Russia when comes to war and army they are always on top of the game, war is their game, but when come to ice I wonder how long it will last.

I was not aware of this and it is absolutely fascinating - building on ice. I hope everyone is keeping an eye on Russia as this is definitely worrying.

How can anyone in their right mind claim some ownership of the Arctic or even build on ice. It will never be accurate knowing the whereabouts if locating your soldiers as the ice does move quite a distance

It's a smart and sneaky move by Russia, I hope the rest of the world have a close eye on the progress of this project, it is no doubt going to have some sort of impact in the future. Maybe the rest of the world are relying on globing warming and hoping this project will fail.

One of the most interesting countries in the world!
It's amazing how the base lasted as long as it did in the first place... Due to Global Warming and Climate change, how much longer will it really last...?
Russia has been on my bucket list for the longest time. It would be quite cool to see what it looks like in person, however, that's probably not possible.

Is there no corner of the earth that is safe from man. Excuse my ignorance but with global warming, is it wise to build on Ice???

Michelle  said:

Russia will never stop with their top secret war strategies etc. we don't even know half of the stuff they are busy with, but that is also the reason why they have been so successful in wars previously and will continue to be so in the future. For the location they have chosen I can’t say much, but there is probably a good explanation for that as well.

Daniella  said:

Its quite interesting that they can just build up naval bases where ever they want, especially in the arctic with global warming i cant imagine that its permanent.

Bianca R  said:

I must wonder how long this escapade will last as surely the effects of global warming will be setting in and of course will cause a problem in the strength of the ice/any ice at all. One really can never underestimate the Russians and they always do seem to be a step ahead, always.

Tamaryn  said:

Reading Helen's comment regarding what Viktor Litovkin has said it makes complete sense that the Russians would be embarking on this endeavor - it seems to have a lot of weighty advantages in store for Russia. Very smart.

Very interesting read. Just shows you that there's always someone one step ahead of you. Something that you think would be a waste someone else can make it into something amazing. I'm just a bit sceptic on the sustainability of this project.

Nikita  said:

I wonder how long it took for any other country to notice that this was actually happening? If they already have a base set up I would imagine that must have taken some time. I just hope that they remember the small and helpless animals that need that ice to survive. Tampering with the already very fragile environment could have deadly consequences.

I can't tell if this is brilliant or a waste of an investment. What if due to global warming and climate change that everything melts away? Anything is possible but surely they know what they are doing. Sneaky sneaky!

Jadine Richards  said:

Maybe we need to take a lesson from them. You have to be sneaky to survive in these unstable times. International relations are literally on unstable ground.

Alexis  said:

i would never underestimate the Russians - they are quite something in how they are and operate. One can never be too careful and I suppose it is a way of just making sure and keeping themselves ahead if anything should happen.

Must be quite something to never know where you would be the next day and the distance - I mean it is most likely not such a huge move - but who knows where you would be in a year from where you are based

Very clever move from Russia to build on the Arctic, I think it is only one country, who is investing in Arctic. Very interesting to read articles about the structures and reasons why Russia is investing money?
Amazing that those bases are self-sufficient in electricity, and equipped with a clinic, library, chapel, gym and cinema.
A military expert Viktor Litovkin, said Russia was pursuing several strategic goals in the Arctic:
Control of international shipping on the Northern Sea Route, including providing alerts about icebergs and severe weather
Protecting Russian oil and gas resources in the Arctic
Defending Russia against any intrusion by foreign warships and missile threats.

Clare  said:

Jessica Apfel   said:

With the expansion of climate change and the melting of the polar caps, I wonder if it is a sustainable project? The Arctic is rich in natural resources, but humans have exploited the Arctic for centuries and the toll it has taken on the fragile environment is being increasingly apparent now.

It shows that they are ahead of everybody . By the time other big world players catches a wake up, they will be far, far advance . They might be ruthless but they are very clever .
