Zimbabwe and Mugabe

While things are not very clear at the moment as to what is going on, it certainly looks like the end of Robert Mugabe’s reign in Zimbabwe.  It is interesting that only a few weeks ago it looked like South Africa had a chance of a wife of a President being the next President, or ex-wife, and Zimbabwe our neighbour, would also have the President’s wife taking over.  It really does not look good, even if they are the most talented people, and I am not saying they are.

In any event, threatening Zimbabweans with Grace Mugabe, who our Government gave a free pass for assaulting a young lady in Johannesburg, seems to have finally triggered off the Zimbabwean army to do something.  I am not in favour of military coups, but, and it is terrible to use that word in the same line as the word “coup”, you cannot help but feel that this time it is something good.  Nobody ever wants the military to take over, but what is going on in Zimbabwe some 37 years after Mugabe came into power is just ridiculous and if the people really don’t have an opportunity in free and fair elections and the army can pull this off peacefully, then I believe it will be a good thing.  Attorneys believe in law and order, but you don’t actually have real free and fair elections in Zimbabwe in any event and so the people don’t have an actual say anyway.  The situation is very fluid at the moment, so who knows what will transpire, but I do hope that it is the end of Robert Mugabe and that he is not allowed to leave the country and that he and his wife are investigated in terms of what their assets are.  Hopefully, it is just a modest amount, like any President of any country would receive, and we don’t suddenly discover that somehow miraculously he is worth hundreds of millions of Dollars – and it is yet another corruption story.  It does appear however that trying to set the stage for Grace Mugabe to become the next President of Zimbabwe was a huge tactical error by Mugabe.

I'm glad the Mugabe's reign is finally over, but I think that some time needs to pass before assessing the true of Zimbabwe now.

I agree with Patrick. As far as I heard, Mugabe was like a puppet and the people that was controlling his decisions at one point are the same people that are taking over now. How would this be any better for Zimbabwe.... But lets see.

Definitely a day that will go down in history, however let's first see what Mnangagwa has up his sleeves, before celebrating too much

I am very glad for Zimbabwe, I hope Zuma learns from the Mugabes mistakes and does not let South Africa get that bad because we are heading that way.

The fall of Mugabe in my view is not something that should be celebrated . The very same people who used to be his friends in government will be in charge . They are not to be trusted . Come fresh elections I can assure you the very same army that was used to bring him down will be used to remove the next democratic ruler . The country is moving in a bad direction and very soon it will be a military state . Watch the space.

Thank goodness Grace will not be the new president of Zimbabwe. I think they have suffered enough thanks for President Mugabe. I hope the new change will actually help that country now to get back to the good place it use to be.

I honestly hope things will get better for the people of Zimbabwe and that they can have a leader who has their best interests at heart and not just his own.

I only hope that Emmerson Mnangagwa is not cut from the same cloth as Mugabe. He certainly has a checkered past - but the change in leadership is revolutionary within Zimbabwe!

I worry that it will simply be an issue of replacing one dictator for another dictator? The political climate is as unpredictable as ever, but, as Sun Tzu says: “In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity”

Robert Mugabe is finally gone, what a happy day for Zimbabwe. I however saw a post on social media of Mugabe’s son, he said this was all part of a plan and they will now “live off billions”.

It is the dawn of a new age for Zimbabwe. I anticipate positive consequences for South Africa as a result of Zimbabwe's new found freedom. If only Zuma could take a lesson from the Old man now!

This is a great time for Zimbabwe and will hopefully act as an example for many of the world's dictators. The country stood united and refused to allow President Mugabe to pave the way for Grace Mugabe to succeed him. Change will, however, take time but this is a promising start to the rebuilding of Zimbabwe.

Finally the end of the modern day Hitler reign! May the bread basket of Africa finally be free. What an example to follow. If only our country can see what the power of standing together can achieve. Unfortunately there is too much corruption in our government for this approach to ever be successful. On the other hand everyone supporting any of the political parties is too scared to trust another party with their vote because of our history. So rather than the unknown of whether things will go back to how they were pre 1994 people will rather support the corruption out of fear. If we could stand together we can force a better South Africa just as the Zimbabweans have done.

The fact that he has FINALLY now resigned - I am hoping that Zimbabwe will be able to pull themselves together and undo the damage that was cause for almost two decades. Never saw this day coming to be honest and I am very happy that a stand was finally made

This is a very loud and very good message to the rest of Africa. This is what can happen if people start standing together. I was born in the then Rhodesia and it was known as the land of Milk and Honey before its fall. May she rise again

It's great news that Mugabe resigned! Zimbabwe will have a chance to build their country up again if it falls into the right hands of course. Regarding the election I don’t think people influence it so much. These days everything is corrupted and if they want Zuma to be president that is exactly what he is going to be regardless of our opinion. Hopefully Zuma will follow Mugabe that will be a very happy ending.

Sinead  said:

Last night on the news, the streets of Zimbabwe were filled with citizens celebrating... They are all so happy with his resignation. Although, this might be good for the country, what will happen now? I wish them luck!
Hopefully Zuma will follow suit... That's just wishful thinking hey...?

Robert Mugabe has been "poisoning" Zimbabwe
The dissensions made were never for the people but for his own benefit.
O and what a disaster it would have been if Grace became the next President, Zimbabwe would have had a shortage of extension cords #loljustkidding

Lucretia  said:

I ill refrain from saying what I really want to say. However, having a wife or ex-wife take over is just to help one get away with the wrongs they have done in the past. Hopefully our beautiful country can learn by this...........

I feel as though if Robert Mugabe does step down it will be a great step in the right direction for Zimbabwe. It's about time they stood up for themselves, however i do agree with Jess A's comment where she mention if being under the leadership of the military is really for the best, but i really do hope for the best for Zimbabwe.

What a time to be alive. I don't think anyone thought this would happen. I also believe that any other reign would be better than Mugabe. How on earth they tried to get away with Grace as president is beyond me. No-one in that country wants another Mugabe in power and I would imagine certainly not Grace! It will be very interesting to see what happens at the end of this week - will Mugabe gracefully step down? I also read that South Africa wants to give Mugabe asylum in SA? No, no, no unless ofcourse Grace can face the music.

Jadine E  said:

You know it has gone too far when the army has intervened. But in all honesty Grace might be next in line as the President of the country.

Jessica Apfel   said:

The Zimbabwean military have categorically stated that it is not a 'coup de tat' because to call it that would mean the change in power is unconstitutional and wont be recognised by bodies such as SADC or AU. The military have kept Bob under house arrest and after his recent speech I am not quite sure if he will voluntarily step down. The next step is for his own party ZANU PF to impeach him! I am so happy that the reign of Mugabe will come to an end but one has to wonder if being under the auspices and leadership of the military is really best for the country? None the less, this is a very interesting time within Zimbabwean politics and I will be following closely.

Bianca R  said:

I do believe that there was no other alternative than military invention in this case, it really is an absolute disgrace what has become of Zim and I believe that eventually, the citizens are officially fed up. It is time for a change, a long awaited change and I have heard many people saying that they could look at returning home after this, dependent on what happens.

Nina  said:
on Tuesday 21-Nov-17 10:20 AM
I also feel that at this stage, whatever happens, is better than what Zimbabwe has now. I am quite surprised. I always thought that the only way Mugabe will resign or step down is when he actually passes away.
