4DX Cinema

I know there is a 4DX cinema in Hyde Park, but recently, during a weekend in Cape Town I tried out the 4DX cinema at the Waterfront.

It is unfortunate that the movie I chose to watch, which is I hope the last in the Maze Runner series, was shockingly bad.  It was so clichéd that in fact I think it is worse than the 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes it had at the time of dictating this.  I think that is too generous.

Basically in the 4DX cinema there are rows of typically 4 seats together and those seats dip, shake, vibrate and do all sorts of things in conjunction with what you are seeing on the screen.  In other words, if there is a driving scene and they are driving along a bumpy road then your seats bump up and down – exactly the same as if you were at a theme park.  In addition to that, when people dive into water, for example a little bit of water actually gets sprayed at you!  Air blows all over as the helicopter or spaceship takes off and lands and I think it could be quite irritating if I was watching a good and serious movie to have my seat bouncing all over the place, but it certainly kept me awake during this movie!  I am not joking and it is not just a reflection on the movie – I was very tired, but every time I was starting to fall asleep the seat would have another dramatic jolt left, right, up and down and leaning me forward and back and waking me up!  It is worth trying, but whether or not it will take off at the price I paid for a 3D movie including R10 for the glasses, which was a total of R185, is another story.  I think that is too expensive but if there is a good action movie that comes out it is certainly worth trying it at least once so you know what it is about.

I left before the end of the movie, although it already dragged on and on, and I was quite nervous to get out of the seat knowing that at any time it could start moving and possibly injure one.

This most definitely sounds like an experience that one should try at least once in their lives.

I must say I love Gold Reef City's 4d Cinema I want to take my son there think he will love it its not a long movie so you wont get motion sickness but I think they must bring more of the cinemas out.

I have had the opportunity to go to one of these 4XD shows at Madam Tussaud's Museum in London, a couple of years ago it was a short show about superhero's but what an experience I really enjoyed it, I guess you also have to watch the right show as well.

I watched the new Jumanji, was good but unsettling. Gets cold depending on the scenario. Did enjoy it, however not something I will do regularly to be honest

Sounds like fun something I would like to experience would wait for something decent to watch before going but on my bucket list.

I would love to try it once but other than that I think once would be enough for me.

I would think that if you have a bad back, something like this would not be good to experience. I know as well that Gold Reef City had something like this, but that was not really a full movie, it was more of a few minute and something to do with nature. I can't really remember it that well, was there many moons ago.
As I was reading this, I tried to imagine watching something like Jumanji. That must be crazy!! I think it's a great idea to keep you awake but can be irritating at the same time. If I want to watch a movie, I don't want to be bothered, or splashed in my face. Then I will rather go to Gold Reef City!

If a very good action movie were to come out I would watch it in 4DX but other than that I don't want water in my popcorn and hair in my mouth. Your experience of it all is very funny though.

I don't think that I would be able to sit through a whole movies like this. We have done the 4D experience but I think it was like 15 min or shorter. What an experience, I could not stop laughing at my mother in law. It was fun but definitely not something i will be able to do for a whole movie.

I think this sounds like a great fun to try. I would love to go to one and see what my son would do if he had to be in this movie house, 3D movies is hard for him he doesn't want to keep the glasses on but its still cool

I think this would appeal to a specific audience such as children and teenagers. I think it is definitely worth a try, however, I certainly would not enjoy every movie with my seat jolting around.

I have heard about this and seems like a cool concept. However, I have sinuses so I think it would irritate me. I don't think you could ever fall asleep in this type of movie lol. It is probably great for one time to experience but at that price it wouldn't be often.

Sounds exciting but at the same time, its not for everyone- I think its targeting an age group because and elderly person would certainly not react well to a jolting chair. However it sounds like fun.

Interesting, I never heard of it but I haven't even bothered wasting my money at cinema's either. Maybe one day we will try it out for the experience but it really won't be a priority for me.

I've recently gone to the movies and it was quite shocking to me as to how much the prices of a movie ticket went up. We paid R310 for two movie tickets and it was not even the 4D movie. I watched a 4D movie before but had a bad experience. My sister at that time 10 years old enjoyed it a lot, but it was not for me. I left the movie as well before it finished, as I believe watching a movie the good old fashion way will never get boring.

Haha i think that would have been funny to see. I still want to do the 4DX movie.I think it keeps the movie interesting and they make sure that people dont fall asleep while they are watching the movie. But will definitely try it

I love going to the movies because one can still afford to, but because of such a high price I am put off by it, though it would be exciting to try and watch a 4DX movie.

As Sinead I have also only been to the 4D Cinema at Gold Reef City and it was quite exciting
I would really like to try it again but it must be an action packed movie like Avengers Infinity War I think that will be awesome

Sinead  said:

I have only been to the 4D cinema in the Gold Reef City once before and that was quite exciting, however, that only lasted 15 minutes. I have also tried those little 8 seater 4D movie theater things and that, too, was very brief.
To be thrown around for 2 hours is a bit much - but surely they thought about this and it isn't going to toss you around for 2 hours straight.
Would be nice to try it one day... Especially for a fantasy or action movie

I have tried it and absolutely loved it ! The pricing is crazy though! I think a lot of people will just go once to see what it is all about and then not so regularly given the pricing!

I have tried the 4D experience at Gold Reef City Theme Park but I am told its nothing like the Movie experience. Apparently the movie experience is really something to try. For the new experience I will pay R185 but I will wait for a movie that is worth it. Thanks for the heads up on this movie not being worthy.

Jadine Richards  said:

This sounds awesome. I would have loved to watch Fast 8 in 4DX. I suppose I would be willing to pay R185 the first time for the experience, however thereafter it is highly unlikely that I would be willing to pay that regularly.

I suffer with motion sickness so this is not ideal for me. It could be fun if you can handle that constant motion, rocking back and forth for more than an hour. I'd feel sick after about 20 minutes to be honest.

courtney  said:

I've experienced this before at Golf Reef. It is exciting but I will never be able to sit on a rocking chair for more than 1 hour.

Bianca R  said:

That is not affordable at all and for me, would be a once-off experience. It's quite ridiculous to validate spending that amount of money, especially when the movie ends up being terrible. I cant see this type of movie really making a success as most people simply do not have the money to lay out, just for an experience.

Daniella  said:

I have been to one of those 4D movie rides in gold reef city it is quite entertaining, however the ride is only 10-15mins. I think a movie that could be 1-2hours long is waay too long to be jolted around. However I would still like to try it out with an action adventure movie.

Michelle D  said:

I attend movies to relax, not to be thrust around in my seat. I like sitting peacefully, eating my popcorn, and immersing myself in the story.

Jessica Apfel   said:

Apart from the excessive cost to see such a thing, I am not a big action movie fan and I do not think that the jolting features will go well with a Rom Com or Political film?

david  said:

R185 for a movie, then add ster kinekor's massively overpriced pop corn and coke, and you're looking at close to R300 per person...
nah, not for me.

I have never watched a movie in 3D so i wont know how its like to even watch it in 4D. but i don't think i'll be happy to go to a cinema and go watch a movie and am not comfortable that will make not to enjoy the movie and i want to enjoy the movie so that i can come back again
