Contributing to good causes

I believe it is always important to contribute to good causes.  A lot of people would say that they agree with that, but they cannot afford to at the moment.  I don’t agree with that – I know that out of my first salary as a candidate attorney, when I earned R1,500 a month, I was able to put R200 aside for something I wanted to buy and so, one can really, on any salary, afford something.  That does not mean it has to be R1,000 or R100 – whether it is R10 or R50, people can make a difference.

A former President of America called the huge number of charities “a thousand points of light” which lights are best seen as stars at night.  Those charities should be things that you believe in – possibly even political parties which you contribute to or environmental organisations, but we should all try and ensure that we keep ourselves involved in things that interest us, are important to us and try to persuade our friends and family to get involved.  It builds a stronger society and it will help and build a stronger South Africa.

Let’s not forget about all the organisations that stood up against Jacob Zuma, by way of example, and who eventually achieved their result.  One must never think it is just you, against some vast organisation, and that you have no chance of winning, because when you contribute to charities and organisations like that, you are of course allowing yourself to be part of something much bigger and it is then not just you against some massive, unstoppable problem.  It is important that we make non-governmental organisations strong and dictators also know that, which is why in countries like Russia non-governmental organisations have to register and are carefully monitored. We don’t want to go down that road and that is why I encourage all of you to get involved in what interests you, to support it financially, even if that means only R20 a month set up on an auto pay debit order, and give of your time as well.  I will make you a better person, it may even lead to you meeting some new friends with whom you have something special in common and it will help your involvement in society.

I also think contributing is important, be a small or big contribution and think that after contributing it feels good to experience to be able to help other people

I agree a little goes a long way even if it is a little contribution there is so many things that we buy and end up not even using it that money could have gone for some sort of organization.

I agree with Michelle in that even if you do not contribute on a monthly basis to a cause, you can still do your part by helping a specific person in need or offering to help with charity events. It is so important that we do not only live for ourselves but work toward uplifting our community and country as a whole.

I prefer to contribute my free time rather than financial donations. I will agree with Angelique that so many dishonest people all over the world today, who is trying to call for donations from everyone, but mean time all the contributions are not going for the right purposes.

Even if you don't contribute to big organisations, there are many other ways of contributing to good causes. Whether it be contributing every month towards ensuring your household recycles properly to buying bread and necessities for the person at the robot. Even small contributions can make the world of difference if everyone plays their part.

Im so inspired by this, because in ones mind you will think R20 is nothing where as that R20 contribution is someones everything. Sometimes time taken to participate in such organisations goes a long way. It makes you feel good about yourself in that you are making a difference somewhere in your community or in someones life, which merely just increases your blessings.

Even if you can not donate then participate. There are many ways people need help any to many causes to count. Yes i agree find something that interests you and make a difference. It will also make you feel good knowing that you are apart of something making a difference in the world no matter how big or small.

I strongly believe in contributions. In our community we have an organisation where we assist the underprivileged. Every month we give out grocery hampers. Being part of the the organisation we all contribute non perishable items. It might not seem a lot for those that can afford the things we have however to those that needs it the most especially food is a blessing in disguise and in return I feel blessed knowing i helped or made a little difference in their lives.

I agree, we must all try to contribute to some sort of charity no matter how big or small. I have recently done the Muddy Princess and it was so much fun and it is for a good cause.

I am always happy to help when it comes to animals. My opinion on helping people is not really the same. There are many people in this world that are just too happy to take and take and take rather than earn a living. I believe that I work hard for my money and so should everyone else. There are limited circumstances where you will find that I am helping people rather than animals. On that note I think more people should make monthly contributions to animal shelters. Even if it is just volunteering your time to go and walk the dogs that makes a world of difference.

This is definitely something to stand by, it doesn't matter how much you contribute to your specific cause because every cent can make a difference. You need to choose your cause, some people have more than other but stand by it.

My Cell Group is busy with a creche that belongs to a township. This women looks after the children of domestic workers and gardeners and doesn't get much for the children she looks after. My cell group has raised some donations and some ladies within your firm are contributing towards those children. We are providing them with a tracksuit and blanket for winter. Our Cell Group has also decided to take this creche on as a responsibility and try do things for them monthly. Whenever there is an opportunity to help someone out, I am willing to do what I can. I have been blessed and it is a blessing to be able to help others.

I agree you don't have to contribute financially only there are a lot of ways to contributing to charities. We are a big supporter of the SPCA and will donate blankets and food whenever we can. It really does make you feel good to know you have help in someway.

I have to agree 100% with that. I have a few organizations that are close to me and that I help (FORA - Friends of Rescued Animals), Wetnose, Pug Rescue, to name but a few. It ight not be much per month but the reward I get in return is worth thousands in my eyes. I also find it feeds my soul when I go to these organizations and give of my time. Such love and trust from animals that were previously abandoned always amazes me. Animals are so forgiving.......

I do try to contribute toward good causes if I can, I cant always put R100.00 as this is difficult when I have things to pay I'm not someone that doesn't have responsibilities and also with my second child on the way every cent matters to me at this moment.

I think many people think that the monetary contributions towards these types of organisations have to be big, which is really not true, a small contribution can help and make a huge difference. I also believe that contributions don’t have to be in terms of money, many of us will be surprised to see how many organisations will be so grateful for some of your time on a Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon.

My preferred method of contributing is to do so through my church on a monthly basis. I send the same amount every month and feel comfortable with the church putting it where they see fit.

I only contribute to people that I think needs it the most. It doesn't always have to be money, it can be something that you think that person will appreciate eg. a warm blanket or clothes to keep them warm in the winter.

I think it is such a great way to show your support by giving your time or contributing money to a cause that is trying to make positive change
Kindness is free and I think this is what the world needs, the more people actually caring about each other and standing together
Just giving some of your time is enough

I completely agree. We all say "not now" but NOW is the best time to start because next month or next year you will look back and regret it if you didn't.

I also think it is excellent to contribute to a cause, whether it be time or money as both are equally valuable.

I really do believe is supporting where I can, from the elderly to the young and even our animals and the sick. You do not have to spend your entire salary, but even as you say, even just a R50 here or there. Anything is better than nothing

It is quite important but one is always skeptical not knowing where our money goes. It is interesting because alot of stores or fast food places have an option of adding x amount to your bill to donate but how do we really know where that money goes to? I do tithe, which of course is tax for the support of the church because there are a variety of programs that they support and one gets to see how the money was spent. If one can really not afford to do that then you could always volunteer your time, but then again us as humans will complain that time is also not something we have alot of.

I'd like to imagine that when one thinks about contributing to the greater good, that, it does not necessarily need to be a contribution of money.

Think about the "Pale Blue Dot" and the theory that developed with it. In 19-whatever, a photograph was taken of earth from billions of kilometres away. The photograph depicted earth as a "pale blue dot." This is all. A pale blue dot, without clear signs of continents, countries or borders. If one was to apply their mind to the fluidity thereof, the fact that we are all of this world, that we are "all in it together," one may be more susceptible to becoming more human. Helping humans, animals, and, the world in general.

Think of the local concept, Ubuntu, the idea of common humanity, social justice & fairness, the idea of tolerance, kindness and forgiveness. It is an ideal which we should all strive for.

When contributing to “good causes” one should do so with the ideal of a global awareness and humanity. Be your contribution, time, effort or money.

I am not sure if financial contributions to these sort organisations are the only way in which to be a 'better person', of course these organisations require the finances to function and are largely dependent on the good will of the public but they can also benefit from one's time. Spending a day at an Animal Shelter and simply sharing your time can be deemed a valuable contribution. If you are in a position to do so, I would implore all members of the public to pick an Organisation in need, and I place emphasis on this, because I have seen a Children's Home resort to a jumble sale outside their premises because they were given too much, whilst other Children's Homes are in dire need for the basics.

We should all do our share and be a part of the Global Community!!

I agree that any small contribution can lead to a greater change, but sometimes its not money that you need to contribute. For example, regarding Global Warming, people believe there is not much we can do about the ice caps melting - I mean not even the residents of Greenland mind the heating - it is agreed less carbon emissions from us would contribute but then again the methane from cows are a very heavy contribution to the problem. Anyway we can live in hope that by cutting down, we can only slow the process.

You can always contribute toward change, it does not have to be a major amount of money, it can be something small, or even maybe donating some of your time toward a good cause is always a good thing.
