Getting a new phone

I was interested to hear that the prospects of Apple and other cell phone retailers are looking somewhat worse at the moment.  That is because, with subsidies for buying phones have not gone down over the years, people are taking longer and longer to upgrade.  Apparently, Apple owners upgrade every 2.5 years and owners of other brands upgrade every 2.7 years, but people are not feeling the need anymore to upgrade every single year.  That in turn is obviously hurting their profits, because they are just not selling as much as they used to and I think that the iPhone X has been the first sort of surprise for them – where it just has not sold as many as they would think.

I would give another perspective – and my perspective is of someone who does get a new phone every year and who in recent years has felt that quite honestly, the upgrades to the phones and the video cameras, while good, have not been as good as I would have hoped for or expected.  As an example, my professional camera takes pictures that are 55Mb big, which obviously allows amazing detail and clarity.  Phones were catching up all the time, but they are miles behind that – at most, excluding a pano picture, which of course you can make huge, and even then it is only 20Mb, most photographs are topping out at about 5Mb.  They don’t have the same sort of clarity and detail I would have expected by now on the basis that if it was 4Mb last year it would be 8Mb this year and 16Mb next year, etc, etc, just doubling each year and that has not happened in the last few years.  Yes, the portrait mode on the iPhone is superb and really does allow you, with the different light settings that you can choose, to take far more professional pictures than previous models of the phone would, but that in itself is never going to be a major selling point to a huge number of people.  Yes, they seem to last an hour longer each year than the year before – but I think people want more than that – they want to see something more dramatic.  A lot of the phones in recent years just have not had that type of “you have to have it” feature and I think as a result, while of course these brands continue to be world leading and making billions of dollars in profit, the sales are beginning to slow down.   I obviously should also correct myself by saying that of course Apple is not just a company that sells phones – it sells iPads, Apple watches, and it increasingly makes a lot of its money through the sale of apps and music on its various stores.  It is definitely not just a one trick pony type of business!

It was definitely a trend in the past to always have the latest phone and to get an upgrade as soon as possible, because technology was improving at a rapid rate and the features where really worth the upgrade. I am not very phased by getting an upgrade, unless it’s a must! It often is an administrative nightmare!

I know a person should in these days pay attention to technology but I do not upgrade at all I buy a relative cheap phone which can dial and take what’s up. Phones are to expensive to upgrade just to have the latest version of something and then to have the phone later stolen I’m fine with a not so expensive phone

That is quite true, when I was younger we (as our family) used to upgrade almost every year. At that time also it was that when I new phone was released they had so many new features and could do many more than your previous one. As we now are older the phones are only getting prettier, I would say. There isn't any WOW features added to the latest upgrades anymore. You realize as well that it's not necessary if you look after your phone to upgrade every year of second year + the hassle of a new contract and because you are upgrading your payment has to increase are also not worth it.

My upgrade was due 3 years ago, and telling the truth I am not interested to get a new account every month, sorry debit order. I am happy with my phone right now, and not too worry to change my phone at this moment.

I would not get a new phone just because an upgrade is due. I currently have an S8 which i'm very happy with. So just because it may have a pixel difference in camera quality or what the case may be I will wait for something worth while before getting a new phone.

I feel it would be a total waste to upgrade every year. I understand for people using their cameras on their phones regularly this would be important, but there is just no need as you say the quality is not improving all that much which makes is unnecessary to upgrade that often.

I recently got my new phone and I went for Android again. I am beyond happy with the camera features 40 MP + 20 MP B/W + 8 MP, OIS, Leica optics, 3x optical zoom, phase detection and laser autofocus, LED flash which I think can measure up to most professional cameras. Huawei have outdone themselves with this phone camera.

I don't see the point of getting a new phone every year. as long as I can download my apps, have whatsapp, receiving and getting calls and emails Im happy with my phone. Upgrading everytime a new phone arrives with better feature etc you'll never really keep up, you barely have a chance to enjoy the phone when a newer version is out.

If you can check with phones lately the changes will be more memory or space, camera and new shape that is all.

I don't think it's necessary to constantly upgrade your phone, the additional features each new phone has is just for show sometimes and the competition between each brand is frustrating. Just stick to what you know and what you need.

All that I basically look for in a phone is for a camera, whats app ability, and phone calls

I was due for an upgrade in May but decided to change my cell phone contract to a laptop instead. I am not really a phone person and am quite happy with my phone that receives and sends messages and receives and makes phone calls. :) That's all I need a phone for anyway,

I only upgrade my phone when it is broken. As people should. Many parts of phones are unrecyclable and harmful to the environment. If everyone in the world upgraded their phone every year, the environmental implications alone would be detrimental. Luckily most people don't have the money for such excessive, unnecessary spending.

Its just not practical to constantly upgrade your phone when there is nothing wrong with your current one, the only people that would constantly upgrade their phone is people that always want to stay with the trend.

I will only get a new phone when it's time for me to upgrade, other than that I will keep what I have. why do you want to go waste money on a brand new phone when you already have one

Michelle  said:

Phones are very expensive but when I hear what some of these devices can do it blow my mind and I then can understand why they are worth so much money. I believe all the phone brands are somehow the same as all the phones can basically do the same as the next one.

I literally only upgrade if necessary. It was alleged that Apple were purposely slowing down phones in their software upgrade and it makes me think it is because they want people to buy newer phones. I do not think it is necessary because if you then try keep up with a trend you will be buying the new Apple phone every few months or every year. Its an unnecessary expense that I cant afford.

I have recently upgraded and before that I hadn't done so for a few years. I will keep my current phone until it no longer works. Although I must admit what influenced the pick of my phone was the hype about the camera. Its a pretty cool camera but I am still to actually make proper use of it.

I have never needed to upgrade before that I'm a patient person lol
Usually they make such a huge thing of when a newer model comes out and then it’s such a small difference to what you have now that it’s not worth getting it

my galaxy note 4 was such a good phone that i only realised a full year after the contract that i could get a new phone. the note 4 went into the safe, only to come out later when my wife decided she didn't like her S7. out came the note 4, added a new battery, and the note 4 continues...

I could have upgraded last year but their was nothing wrong with my phone so i only upgraded my internet package but a few weeks after i upgraded my package my phone started giving problems but with the contract i have now is a month to month contract so i can upgrade my phone anytime i want.

I think people are upgrading less often, or purchasing less top of the market, newly released phones, because it is just getting ridiculously expensive, and if you need to cut somewhere, that is probably one of the first places you will start making cuts.

I myself used to be a phone fanatic to a point where i upgraded every 6 months and always made sure to upgrade as soon as i can in order to get the newer version, but however in agreeance with this blog i dont feel the need anymore for a couple of years now in face to pay more for a phone that now has 2.4 megapixels more camera ext, it is not worth the money spend. i will wait for the 2 years on the contract before thinking of upgrading and hope that some features are better of newer. i do miss the flip phones, 'hello moto' (nostalgic

The world is changing on a daily basis. The only reason I had updated my phone this year, was because I had dropped it and it broke, if I had not, i would most likely still be using the same phone now - and i was due for an upgrade last year already.

All consumers are different and have different ways of approaching the marketing world. I feel that the phones that are coming out these days, last and provide you with as much as possible already that there is no need to upgrade all of the time these days, however you will have another consumer whom will always want the best all the time and will make sure to upgrade all the time just for the status. I actually went for a downgrade this time, and I feel as though there is no difference.

There is a lot of emphasis put on Apple - they have done well, but it is not a brand that I would go for myself to be honest and the fad may wane in due course. The economy is as well tough, and so the fact that their prices are not necessarily ludicrous but are a lot more than if you decided to go with say, Sony, it will not appeal to certain markets and so business will be lost there.

Everyone loves to have a new phone but i don't think we have to feel the need to upgrade every year, if your phone is working perfect why upgrade all the time. But we all have different interests in things, some are the newest phones other people love shoes, cars, jewelry depends on the person.

I love to look at phones but not to upgrade every year, as long as i can make a call and receive a call i am very much content with that. Having the best phone proves nothing especially when it gets stolen.

I don't like an iPhone simply because the phone is just stupid and in most cases you are not suppose to be smarter than your phone, i would like to upgrade my phone right now but also i have learnt that its much more done i thought it is, it takes great pictures just like an apple phone so i would buy an iPhone even if they sold it for R100 or less, i would only buy a Samsung or Huawei simply because they have great features do very good pictures and videos without going to the mirror and taking a picture like people who use an iPhone

In all honesty, getting a new phone every year is a little excessive - unless your job demands it, I don't see why you would? Sure, your contract may upgrade but doesn't a better model phone come with added expenses, does it then not mean that your contract price will increase?

Unless you can truly afford to sustain such - keeping up with the latest advancements in the cellular realm is not a draw card for me!

Every one wants the best phones because a phone to a person is very important. Every year the cell phones obviously upgrades and gets better and better. I have used Samsung for years now and wanted to upgrade to the S9 but when we got at the shops the one sales rep said to us that it's better nowadays to buy a Huawei phone than a Samsung. Even the make of the cell phones gets better every year. Its always difficult to choose!
