As a result of the increase in VAT and the petrol price going up, inflation has risen slightly. It was 3,8% in March and has now increased to 4,5% in April. That is obviously comfortably within the South African Reserve Bank’s upper limit of 6%. The good news is that a lot of basics have seen their prices come down. For example, bread prices are 3.7% lower than one year ago and bananas and oranges are now 10% cheaper than they were one year ago. Over the last few years inflation has averaged between 5% and 6%, so it really dropped quite a lot to get down to 3,8% and 4,5% is still certainly lower than it used to be. It is obviously a positive sign in an economy.

A little good news for us but can you really see the difference in the prices. And the petrol is really a killer one of these days we all will be coming to work with a horse.

This is a bit of good news, however the constant petrol price hikes is concerning and impacts so many aspects of one's life.

It is very positive news to hear that fruit and bread prices are going down, but of course the travel become so expensive that maybe it is not a bad idea looking in to using public transport or maybe even start looking in to working from home idea.
Petrol start costing so much that yes, will be enough money for the month to feed family with bananas and oranges!

It is good to have positive news like this. The petrol price hike doesn't make us very happy though.
I just hope our economy gets better

This is positive news atleast. I have noticed a few things that were becoming very expensive that its sort of dropped in price but you always wonder what the next inflation could knock us with.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau once said: "Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains." Think about it, humans are essentially free, and were free, but, the "progress" of civilisation has substituted subservience to others for that freedom, through dependence, economics and social inequalities.

I enjoy reading positive news like this, it makes me feel hopeful even when we are dealing with extremely high petrol prices!

With the rate the fuel prices is increasing the small positive changes cannot be felt. Basic living in South Africa is far from that at the moment and I really hope for some major change soon because currently these living expenses aren't sustainable

And so every cloud has a silver lining. But it will be nice if the price for Petrol can drop a bit. If you do not have money for petrol, you will not be able to go to work. Therefor you will not earn any money to buy your food anyway.

The increase in fuel is noticeable and if it keeps going up a lot of people will not be able to afford to commute back and fourth. If public transport was reliable it wouldn't be such a problem, but unfortunately that's not the case.

Does not feel like a positive sign to my pocket. I can say that I have noticed the difference in the fuel price and it is worrying. I will however keep positive and buy more banana's for my shakes, before that goes up again.

This is good news, lets hope that the petrol price keeps on decreasing, if not where is the money going to with the petrol increases.

The South African economy was never going to be a quick fix. Basic necessities being cheaper is extremely important in South Africa where unemployment and low wage remain a very widespread reality. SA is on a path to improvement, we need to be happy with these small victories until substantial change has taken place.

Inflation Rate in South Africa averaged 9.10 percent from 1968 until 2018, reaching an all-time high of 20.70 percent in January of 1986 and a record low of 0.20 percent in January of 2004! This is a positive change within our economy - perhaps we can attribute it to the recent change within our political sphere!

Well at least fruit prices are going down, but the petrol price is my main concern especially traveling 120 km a day it’s starting to get unaffordable

It is good to hear but hopefully its not one of things where we're moving one step forward and three steps back. I hope our economy continues to grow more steadily.

it's a matter of time until the petrol price pushes up the cost of everything else. it used to cost me around R650 to fill my car's tank. it's now around the R800 mark...
