A lot of the Internet companies are obviously looking at cyber bullying at the moment. The use by the Russians during the 2016 elections in the US of Facebook in particular has obviously drawn a lot of attention to the big tech companies in a way that people can exploit them. I noticed on one of the recent updates for Instagram Version 44.0 in the description of the update in the App store, that Instagram now filters out bullying comments which they say are intended to harass or upset people in their community. They say the platform has always prohibited bullying, but now Instagram itself actually has built in certain technologies to try and address this. I think we are going to see lot more of this being rolled out by a variety of companies, especially as Artificial Intelligence or AI becomes more and more advanced.

Bullying on any platform does no good to your self-esteem and also has an impact on the ones closest to you.

Cyber bullying can lead to so much negativity on a persons life. Better that they are filtering them out.

I am quit happy to hear that some of the platforms are filters out bullying comments which they say are intended to harass or upset people in their community. But people must be extremely careful what they post and how they approach others!
Some safety tips has to apply:
1. Always check your privacy settings.
2. Turn off location settings: Not everyone you meet online has good intentions.
3. Think twice before you post or message.

Cyber bullying is a massive thing especially now that technology is getting bigger and greater. So it really has such a huge impact in people's lives and it does affect them drastically. I have read many sad stories from Cyber Bullying and hence why I do not have too much to say on any social networking and do not download just any social networking apps as well. My daughters beg me to be on these social networking things but I refuse it because I do not want them ever experiencing such things in their lives and they can decide that for themselves at an older age when they are more mature.

I watch a movie about cyber bullying the other day and I was shocked to see how cruel kids can be. See how kids encourage self-harm or suicide. They even create false identity profile to bully the other child.

The sad reality of this generation, and, future generations is that they/we are enslaved to our social networking platforms. People, who, hold the belief that they are "worthy" only because of the number of "likes" they get, actively removing pictures / tweets / posts that don’t receive enough likes. People who actively live to post every step of their daily living, as if, this is what makes their life meaningful, and, in living in it, an interesting life, a life worth following, and, being liked! Meanwhile, behind this social media façade, where a person has taken several hundred selfies, in order to get just the right one, in the right lighting, where they just feel like they good, is the person who is subjected to the ratifications of others.
This is the misery of it all. People, all people, need to find their own purpose, and, that which makes them feel worthy ALL BY THEMSELVES, because once you idolise yourself on other people’s thoughts and ideas of you, you are subject to being bullied.
Although the measure that Instagram has put in place, is an aid to persuade and deter from being “bullied” online, I would like to convey the following, life changing statement: “What other people think of you, is NONE of your business.” Live your life, live your best life.

This is a relief as it often seems as though these social media platforms are used more by internet trolls to harass social media users than to allow people to share their memories and experiences. I think it is a very good step by these companies to try and curb cyber bullying rather than turning a blind eye.

This is a very progressive step towards curbing cyber bullying and I hope other online platforms follow suit quickly. It seems to have taken a while for a filter like this to be developed- it's been needed for some time! I'm looking forward to seeing more companies implement similar technologies.

Cyber bullying is an ever present threat to vulnerable children and teens. Nowadays it's very easy to anonymously bully sensitive people and it often has detrimental consequences. It's nice to see social media sites taking responsibility and doing something about it.

I am all for this, the younger generation live on social media and bullying on social media can be very intense and quite traumatic! Prevention is better than having to deal with a situation when it has blown up!

All social media applications should have this. Most of the apps have an option where you can report a photo, comment or someone’s profile. This is where the apps should be well managed, and actually take the necessary steps to prevent bullies to not use that app anymore. So many people not just children but even adults get bullied. And once again I believe verbal bullying is much worse than physical bullying. That's why people can’t just leave this problem, as people use social media on a daily basis!

This should have been implemented a long time ago already
I feel there are so many people bullying others and just getting away with it, but I wonder how they will do this and how Instagram will pick up that someone is being bullied?
Because you can literally say anything on Instagram as long as you put the right emoji next to it

This is a great idea! There is way too many people getting bullied online, and it should come to a stop. obviously face to face bullying is just as bad and should stop, however i feel as though on social media people can remain anonymous and can be brutally mean. This is a great feature that an app can get.

Cyber bulling is a very bad thing and in most cases people kill themselves because of this cyber bulling. If only we could support each other not just on the cyber but everywhere we can build a better future and we will have a better country that doesn't have bulling anywhere

I don't want to be negative but what about all the other people that had already been bullied? Nonetheless a step in the right direction. Social media is a powerful tool which can be used to make you or break you. Bullying still has a long way to go and it starts at home. If you chose to bring life into this world, raise your kids not to be bullies. I know, easier said than done but it is for this exact reason why I enjoy 13 reasons why and think it should somehow be Incorporated into schools - even though they have received flack for it and people may be more inclined to take the step off the ledge.

I think this a great thing as people get attacked on the Web and the world can see it and it degrading for one. I also hope they can block negative news and videos that people share of animal cruelty and child abuse I for one cant deal with Facebook at the moment because ever second post loaded is disturbing things that on your world. I'm not saying I don't want know how bad the world is but that's why we have the new and news 24 why does need to be on peoples walls all the time. I makes us negative.

This is a great initiative from the Apps. The amount of time that children spend on social media is actually insane and I am sure the bullying that happens is relative to this. I know that some Apps like Facebook allow you to report a post if it is offensive etc. but once it’s out there it’s out there. I heard on the radio yesterday that Apple is developing an App to monitor and limit how much time you spend on your phone. So parents will also be able to implement a time limit as to when and how long their children can use social media and their phones.

It's great to see that social media platforms are now addressing this issue and trying to filter it out. Bullying is such a terrible thing and affects so many people's lives especially young people and it does so much damage. The news is always telling us about kids committing suicide due to bullying, and I think it's time something is done about it.

In a way I kind of wish they had this update a few years ago... It seems like a good idea but how will Instagram filter out bullying for real? How will they pick it up? There are so many ways around it. Also, these days it seems like you become a meme rather than being "bullied."
I wonder if this has anything to do with 13 Reasons Why.

This is such an positive step. I agree with Brumilde in regards to the having so much of different forms of abuse. With our youth being exposed to all different types of social media it is so easy for them to become targets which ends up drastically.

I wonder how effecient the filter will actually be - what is viewd as offensive to one may not be viewd in the same light by another.
There is a strong correlation between cyber bullying and the rise in suicide stats;
Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people, resulting in about 4,400 deaths per year, according to the CDC. For every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it!!
It is great to see such a significant platform take a stance!

I don't have instagram myself, but what a great update to the app. There are so many victims of cyber bullying, and at some stage action will have to be taken against the perpetrators. I have read so many stories the past year about children committing suicide due to bullying. Kids these days live on social media and I am so relieved that the are trying to deal with it in some sort of way. Hopefully all social media platforms will start implementing this.

The update on Instagram is a really positive thing. Cyber bullying has not been taken seriously enough, which is strange considering the people most affected by this is the youth who react to such strongly. I hope facebook and other social media sites jump on this bandwagon sooner rather than later.

I think this can only be a positive step forward, as there are many forms for bullying, mental, physical, emotional and it can happen only any platform. Any its is present at all ages, even young ones from age 3 and up. And it does effect you, and the people around you.
