At its recent developer conference, Google showed a new feature called Duplex. It is part of Google Assistant which is a voice-controlled system that competes with Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri. Apparently, the Google Assistant is so good that it can phone a restaurant and make a reservation and the people answering the phone on the other side do not know that they are speaking to a computer. It will apparently be launched as an experiment soon and it relies on AI, which learns automatically from data rather than having to be programmed. Google is considered as one of the leaders in the AI field and have been working on this for the last 10 years. The technology will predict the next words or phrases that you would usually use when typing an e-mail and suggests them to you! Interestingly enough, Google feels that many children don’t have enough manners these days and children will be encouraged by Google Assistant to say “please” to Google Assistant.

Wow, it just gets better and better with technology over the years. It will be interested to see how the Web has a good impact on children's manners/behavior.

This is a great way if you in a hurry and you do not want to hold on for hours over the phone. But the manners would come from the parents but if it would help in the children's up bring then I would think its a great app.

This is very innovative, however I believe it does make people lazy to the point where we do not need to do anything for ourselves. I agree with Sinead that the teaching of manners should be up to parents.

It is something amazing to know and Google is getting to the next level of AI field. But from the other side this type of help makes us more lazy and forget how to write, think and talk!

Technology is forever changing and progressing. I think it would be better if the system could read your mind rather than predicting what you should be saying/typing. It is indeed very lazy that the system would predict what you would say rather than use what you really would.
Lastly, it is not up to technology to teach a child manners. It is up to the parents!

This is quite interesting. I know a few people who are very limited with their words, simply saying: "ok" or "no" - so it would be far more interesting to know what their predictive text would be. Would it be a repetition of "ok" "ok" "ok"?

Technology makes life easier more especially when you need assistance and the sad think about it is we spend lots of time on our phones than speaking or sharing good conversations with our love once.

AI will take this world by storm and who will need an assistant with this revolutionary development? I think we should embrace AI, because sooner or later it will dominate a fair amount of our 'world'. Such an exciting innovation!

I actually heard about this on 702 a few weeks ago. It's very convincing and useful if you don't like making phone calls or just don't have the time.

This just makes me think about how lazy people are becoming, it is a cool feature to assist you with composing a proper or usual email but where is the thinking if Duplex can now predict what you're going to say, type it and possibly send without your final consent. I do agree children need to learn to say "please" and "thank you" though.

This is some scary yet exciting stuff we are extremely fortunate to be part of this generation when ideas like this are being tested and explored! It sounds like a pretty cool feature and I hope it takes off soon I would love to try it!

This stuff really blows my mind. It is scary that you could be having a conversation with "someone" who is not a person and be none the wiser. Of course a PA like this would be super helpful but we cant be blindsided by the convenience...the rate at which technology is developing is alarming. Personally, it makes me uncomfortable and I would be happy taking a few steps into the past.

I like the fact that you would have to be polite, as yes, kids these days a re not vey polite at all - This is a great feature to have, however laziness seems to be key here in a way....but so is the desire to simplify things in this complicated world as well

Once again technology surprises me! I can’t believe that people are so smart to come up with all these incredible ideas. Someway to make our lives so much easier. I think that we aren`t always aware of all the awesome tricks our phones can do. Just like the keyboard I have on my phone sometimes give the words I wanted to say before I even typed it. I’m looking forward to see what else Google will give to us.

That is so nice, I think it will be amazing if it would go world wide. And if it learns children manners even better. Technology are getting better each day what will it be like in the next 20 or so years

This is great I have not used Google assist I'm actually still not sure what it is, so if anyone would like to show me I will gladly be happy to learn. The way I feel these days I sound like my mother when she cant get something right on here phone she is like people can someone just do it for me...

This is the most brilliant idea. The manners part caught my attention immediately. Now children and adults can learn to say please. You really get some rude people out there. Its bad that computers has to teach manners to people.

Wow this is actually something I look forward to what a great idea
The thing I like the most is that you will have to say please before Google assist will provide you with the assistants you need
This will also teach some adults manners

i recently started using the google assistant, and it is brilliant. i find myself talking to my phone more and more frequently. which brings me to another point. a phone is no longer a phone. it is a pocket computer which can also make phone calls.
