Yolande van Biljon starts at the SABC

I was quite interested to read about the appointment of the former Chief Financial Officer of the Road Accident Fund, Yolande van Biljon, to the SABC.  She apparently has been tasked with sorting out the financial situation at the SABC which posted a nett loss after tax of R977 million in the last year and only had R82 million in cash on hand compared to the previous year’s R881 million.  What she will manage to achieve will obviously depend on how much freedom she is given to do so – the SABC has in recent years, according to media reports anyway, been subjected to a lot of political meddling.

I can only say, from dealing with her at the Road Accident Fund, she was extremely professional and fair.  I don’t think she is the type of woman who will tolerate “special deals” or people who believe their payments should be prioritised ahead of others and she is certainly an extremely hard worker.  When she was at the Road Accident Fund during the height of their cash flow crisis, she was always available to answer e-mails – and I am talking about e-mail replies that you would get from her at 10pm at night, even though the Road Accident Fund used to close its offices at 4.30pm.  So she is hard working, she has integrity and she has worked at cash starved entities before.  If she is given a fair chance, she will no doubt succeed.

Ms Van Biljon was always a forced to be reckoned with and was always available to assist (in my earlier days of having previously worked for Defendant's attorneys). She was always determined to find out why certain tasks had not been attended to. So it wont be any different on the new appointment.

That is a lovely compliment to her. I'm sure she would love to see this. Hopefully that was a good decision in appointing her in that position, but as you said it will all depend on the freedom she is given. Only time will tell if she will succeed in her task, but it sure sounds like she will do her best and try everything she can. All the best to her!!

This definitely is a tedious task. I'm sure that her job is extremely difficult and probably upsets most people that have being doing things under the rug. However it sounds like she enjoys working hard and making a difference in cash starved entities - which is truly remarkable.

It is nice that something is being done and that they have brought someone in whom will hopefully be capable of assisting. But yes, what happened that there was such a loss...oh wait...corruption is rife - so it is not a surprise

Sound like she is a very hard working person who always wants to prove herself to the people that think she can't handle the pressure and more. i wish all the best of luck and she has made a name for herself and now she just needs to keep it

She has proved herself at the Road Accident Fund and we can only imagine what she will do at the SABC. I just think we need to also remember that Rome was not built in a day and we cannot have too much of high expectations for her. She is tasked with a huge burden. However, I am confident that this is a step in the right direction. Exceptional news just before Womens month! Her qualifications speak for themselves. I keep saying... allow a woman to run our country - this is a good start though!

The SABC could really use a leader with integrity and professionalism. To be honest I think most of our state institutions could use leadership like that. We can only hope that politics will not interfere too much with her ability to secure substantial change.

at this stage i am so disillusioned that i will have to see actual change, not news of change that might happen sometime in the future.
