I recently bought the new iPhone XS Max and I am disappointed in some respects that it is not a major upgrade on the iPhone X. The first thing to remember of course is that for Apple to be able to ship so many models, basically even right now they are busy finalising the next model. In other words, they have to finish all the designs for the model at least 6 months before the release to be able to ship so many so quickly at the same time all around the world. The part I do like is obviously it has a bigger screen – the iPhone X was 5.8” and it has now increased to 6.5” by them making it longer. It is pretty much the same size as the old iPhone 8 Plus except that it is an edge to edge screen. My normal favourite excuse to upgrade is to get a bigger and fancier camera and this year’s new phones have exactly the same camera as last year’s iPhone X had. However it does seem to take pictures with better colous for some reason.
The chip has upgraded to the A12 and the pixel resolution has increased slightly, but that is because the phone has become bigger. Really, apart from the fact that it is a bigger screen and you can now get up to a 512 Gb memory if you want to pay extra for it and it is a slightly faster and newer chip, I don’t see any reason to upgrade this year. It makes one think that they are getting close to the limit as to the dramatic improvements that they can make each year. The Apple website does say that it uses up to 50% less power than the A11 chip, that graphics performance is up to 50% faster and allegedly a slightly better battery life, but I was hoping for so much more than that and “expressive memoji” is not something I upgrade a phone for.

I know a lot of people who get every iPhone upgrade as it comes out. I prefer to hang on to what I have until I absolutely have to go through the hassle and paperwork of getting a new phone- never mind having to comply with RICA each time.

This is one phone I cannot seem to figure out. Some of my friends have iPhones and it just seems like a very difficult phone to operate. I have never been part of the frenzy that just had to have an iPhone. At the end of the day, they can still all do the same thing.
But it is a disappointment when you expect something great, especially from Apple and they don't deliver.

I have never been an iPhone user. Coming from someone who has used Samsung, Sony and Huawei - technology is forever getting better and upgrading, but I think the Huawei P20 (and the Mate20 Pro) are looking like my next buy. That's obviously only how I feel now. But when the new Huawei arrives next year, I think I'll get that one... I must say I am impressed with the current Huawei and might stick to the brand

Personally, I am not a fan of iPhone. I find it difficult to use and not user friendly. I will always stick to an Android.

I really don't see why a newer version of a phone has to be released just for name sake. I mean if there is no real improvement or nothing drastic I don't think they should bother releasing a newer version. I really believe that it takes the excitement away!

I-Phones are really over priced. My daughter has an I-Phone now and seems to be quite a difficult phone to get used to. I am quite happy with my Samsung thank you.

I would like to switch to iPhone for some time now, all the phones I had before are no use! The operating systems are terrible and battery is not lasting.
Cash price in South Africa for this model is almost R 32 000.00 - it is a bit much for an upgrade!

Never been into iPhones, so cannot really comment on this. Does seem as though you are grasping at straws however when you are unable to produce something better that the last....but it may make a difference to others

Never been an iPhone fan. Samsung or Huawei works perfectly fine for me as where the iPhone you would need to study it a little.

I've always loved Iphone however at this point it seems as though they are releasing the same exact phone and calling it something different. I'm also constantly behind with Iphone - The huawei P20 is looking like a much better phone for me.

I think they want to push out new phones just for the sake of having a new phone on the market. This is also happening with Samsung to a point where the S8 and S9 are almost identical. Phone companies should improve the whole phone not just one aspect

I am not really interested in iPhone's, it cost a lot of money to fix as well. I am happy with my Samsung

I don't think the cost of this phone can be justified in normal circumstances. I personally wouldn't ever spend that amount on an iPhone or any phone actually. Still loyal to Samsung.

I've always said that I don't like iPhones as they aren't user-friendly at all. I'm happy with my Samsung as long as I can receive phone calls and use my daily apps, I'm fine. I can't see how spending that much money on a phone would be beneficial to anyone.

If I had the R22 000.00 it costs to buy the newest iPhone X, I definitely would not be spending it on the newest iPhone X. The technological revolution happened so quickly over the past few decades and now it seems stunted. There are much cheaper and better camera phones you can buy without the "iPhone" label. In fact, for R22 000.00 you can buy a pretty decent camera (a lot of decent canons go for half that price).

I was also looking at upgrading to the Iphone XR, on apples website there is an option to compare different apple phones. You can see the difference between the cameras, storage and colours etc. of all there apple phones. Which i thought was very helpful when trying to decide if it is or is not a good idea to upgrade and to which phone to upgrade too.

Whether or not the phone gains more features, customers loyal to the brand will still purchase it. I don't regret getting an iPhone but if I could have a do over I probably could've stuck with my phone longer and not rushed into getting a new phone.

I just think the iPhone is totally overpriced.
It’s a really nice phone but same as Clare, I am happy as long as I can make calls and send messages

I am still on the Iphone 6S but looking to upgrade. I didn't feel the need to but my battery is done with its life and the picture quality isn't great. I also think that I have waited long enough :). It is ridiculously expensive though but for me the phone has lasted a good 3/ 3 and half years. Android users have tried to convince me saying some phones have 4 cameras and this and that but I think I am too use to using an iphone to change brands.

On a side note it is actually far cheaper to purchase the iPhone XS Max in the USA and have it sent over than to actually purchase it in SA. With a retail price in USE of $1099 and a retail price in SA of;
The base model, the 64GB iPhone Xs, will retail for R21 999, and the prices only go up from there – all the way to R31 999 for the 512GB Xs Max variant.
It appears that the advancements are minor and I am not sure it would warrant such a price?

It would seem as though Apple has hit the ceiling with the technology for now, but I am sure the next one will have more of the dramatic technological upgrades Apple is known for.
