According to the latest arrangements of the Henley Passport Index, South Africa is now ranked at number 52 in the world in terms of the number of countries you can visit without a Visa. We were 50th last year. South Africans can currently visit 102 countries without a Visa or where you can get a Visa upon arrival, but many of those countries are not really countries you would be excited to visit. People with a Seychelles passport for example can go to 152 countries without a Visa and people from Mauritius can go to 146 countries without a Visa. In terms of the rest of the world, Japanese passport holders can visit 190 countries without a Visa – just get on an aeroplane, catch a flight and arrive there without having to apply for a Visa. Holders of UK passports and USA passports can get Visa-free access to 186 countries. Some of the destinations that South Africans can visit without a Visa include Hong Kong, Brazil, Argentina, most of the Islands in the Caribbean, Ireland and obviously most countries in Africa as well as a number of other countries in South America.

This blog was absolutely essential to me! I've always had big dreams of visiting Ireland and Hong Kong, although I have never actively conducted research into the necessities in order to travel, always simply assuming that a Visa is needed for any "worthy" destination.

No wonder there are so many foreign people in our land, just taking over and doing what they want. If we had a system in place like New Zealand and Australia - where they are very strict to who can enter their country we would also maybe not have so many problems as it's those outsiders who cause the chaos. On the other hand it also makes it easier for us to at least visit some very beautiful countries which I will not complain about.

That's interesting to know. Funny enough, Ireland is on my bucket list. I'd love to visit! A friend of mine went over there to study for a year.
I also feel like it's too easy to get into SA - Not only for holiday makers.

This is really interesting. I read not so long ago that UAE was on top of this list. I do want to go to the Philippines and the Bahamas soon and I am so glad that we do not require a passport!

That is very interesting i thought you had to have a visa to get into any country. At least if we don't have a visa we know which places we can go to now. Very interesting

Visas are a tricky thing, although they are very necessary, I sometimes wish they didn't exist! It is an extra cost that can be very expensive!

I think this is interesting and important information to have, that with South African passport can be allowed to visit so many countries without a Visa. It sounds like out of all listed countries, only Japanese passport holders can visit almost the whole world without a Visa.

At least we can go to Islands in the Caribbean cause I live for sunny beach days.
When I went to Italy last year I had to get a Schengen Visa, I went through a company called Visas & Passports unlimited and they made it so convenient, in less than two weeks I had my Schengen Visa.
I obviously had to pay more at the end of the day but ill rather pay and let them do all the documents and make sure I have all the information required.

I know that this was one of topics of the recent BRICS conference. Apparently countries such as China actually agreed to diminish their Visa requirements for South African passport carriers, but this has yet to be implemented.

Travelling on a South African passport is not the greatest! A visa to the UK can cost in the region of R2000 and if you intend on visitng mulitple European countries you may also require a Schengen Visa which comes at an additional price... Sure is costly being a South African, in every respect of the word 'costly'.
Thailand was one of the countries that I recently travelled to where I was given a Visa upon arrival...

I'm just happy that a visa is not needed to visit places like Mauritius and Seychelles, or Islands in the Caribbean! Next on the list will have to be Seychelles, it looks absolutely beautiful and I believe the culture is amazing too.

Travelling is expensive, when adding the price of a Visa it can get even more costly! I had no idea that we didn't need a visa to visit Ireland - definitely going to try go there.

I recently read that a Japanese passport is the best to have at the moment as one can visit the most countries without a visa. I am lucky enough to have a Greek passport which is ranked number 6, together with an Australian passport, in the world and am able to visit 183 countries.

Good to know there is more than 1 country we can visit but in our time most people are looking to move not just visit. Reason for our small number of 102 as you mentioned is because of all the diseases that have broken out over the years and other countries try to stop it from migrating over to their country by making it difficult for us to visit. That's just what I've experienced in my opinion. But regardless of our rank just knowing we as South Africans can still visit 102 places with no visa is a bargain.

I am definitely put off travelling somewhere when a Visa is required. I have travelled to some countries where the South African Passport allows you to visit Visa-free and it has been exciting. Hong Kong was especially interesting. My next trip is to Bali and the Gilli Islands and those are also Visa free for South Africans. My soon to be husband has his Dutch Passport which is ranked 11th on the list of most powerful passports so hopefully some day I can get my Dutch Passport as well!

I would love to go to Ireland! I didn't know that, I think I will be arrange a trip for myself in the near future - before they change their laws. I think its safer having to apply for a visa before entering a country which could make it more attractive because not just anyone can get in, I guess...

Taking all things into consideration, I think 102 is a fairly decent number even though the listed countries aren't that attractive. I would however be interested in a visit to Brazil or the Caribbean, especially around this time of year.

It is very convenient to be able to visit another country without having to go through the entire visa process. It is quite unfortunate that we are unable to do that with some of the more popular tourist destinations.
