American political reality TV

Very few people realise, while following American politics and the battles between the Democrats and the Republicans, President Trump and the investigations of Robert Mueller, how profitable this has become for the media companies.  Journalism was in all sorts of trouble before the last election and in the last year or two most publications such as the New York Times, The Washington Post, etc have seen their subscriber numbers rise, their digital and online subscriptions rise and CNN broke through the $1 billion profit margins for the first time.  While the President may claim some media are failing, the actual reality is that they are now at their healthiest financial position in at least the last decade with CNN and MSM BC and most of the media experiencing record audiences.  The once reality star President has in fact turned political coverage almost into a reality show which many Americans and people all around the world love to follow, regardless of which side they take.

It has even benefited the fake media, websites and other more right-wing publications, some of which even featured stories against Hilary Clinton claiming that she was running a child sex operation out of a restaurant in Washington DC – the story that unfortunately a good percentage of Americans actually believed!

Credit must go current President of America. While he is anti- media, people consume more media products because they want to know what is his next move.

If there is one thing that is true to most people's nature, they love being able to witness the circus and the clowns, knowing that it's not theirs.

The media will do anything for a good story even if it’s not true! I think as soon as they find something that sparks an interest they will milk it until the very end! I think investigative journalism is very interesting, but I would hate to have to spend my whole life watching one person and having to report back on every detail!

One thing Trump has done is make politics entertaining! I just wonder what people will say of his presidential term 20, 50, 100 years from now? Regarding the media, they will ride any gravy trial for as long as they can.

American politics are so interesting and I live watching the drama that unfolds. It is no wonder that the media is doing so well. Although not always covered correctly, the way these shows are presented make for great entertainment.

Oh how ridiculous the world has become in this day and age and what people will believe...as Winston Churchill once said....A lie will travel half way across the world before the truth has even put its pants on.

I feel as though a lot of media companies aren't as independent as they as they are- I'm very sure that there are many that are under the thumb of politicians

One questions what is true news nowadays. The media is obsessed with negativity and that's why I prefer not to read news so much anymore. Every now and then I will check whats happening but nothing really changes from the last negative news I read.

Americans love to dramatize everything, they know how to be influential to their public and use it to manipulate people's ideas and thoughts

Obviously media companies are running a business, they will do anything for their businesses to grow and earn lot of profit, but what was published about Hilary was not nice.

I notice on every news channel all you see is Trump and things about the North Korea for some reason, I can imagine they doing their best now because Trump is taking a stand and people all are nervous on what he will do next. I have to laugh at CNN though they always trying to make Trump look the worst ever (no wonder why he calls them fake news). I guess because CNN is pro Clinton's (so I have heard) they would want to do that to him. I don't agree with all that Trump does, however at least he doesn't just stand for any nonsense, very brave man.

media will publish anything these days and we are fools to read and believe it. Politicians and the media go hand to hand , with out the each other there will be no media and the Politicians won't have their platform.

Well with good news it never goes to media ,but as soon as someone does one thing wrong its all over the media and news. Making it worse than it is.

I think they actually sit and think about what they can talk about next to be in the media. I cant stand Trump, to me he is a joke

Basically it’s all propaganda to influence the reader, obviously the media knows what the people want.
People will rather read about a sex scandal than real world problems.
Did you know in the UNHCR report for 2018, there were 68.5 million forcibly displaced people in the world, including 25.4 million refugees?
I did not see this on the news or in any newspaper.
But when Donald Trump’s wife Melania trump visited Ghana it was all over the news and don’t forget her outfits also made headlines “Melania Trump Clothing and Style on Her Tour of Africa”

It's funny how people will always pay for wrong information. It's very hard for a person to build a reputation and it's funny how someone can just simply make a lie about that person forgetting that you have people that look up to you and want to be like you and just like that their dreams are shattered because of a lie.

It's kind of shocking to think that people make money off of President Trump's ridiculousness. I have to agree with Jessica Apfel in that there must be some kind of relationship between the media and the politicians. I suppose it benefits them both.

Good news does not keep people entertained or at least for long. We are rather interested in seeing the downfall of people or what happened with this one and that one. You would rather be interested in scandal like Hilary Clinton running a child sex operation to try and figure out if its true than how people are trying to save the world. Its amusing how Trump tries to denounce all media houses that paint him in any bad light and claims "fake news". We must just remember when reading these stories that often they are just a distraction from reality

Michelle D  said:

It's pretty disheartening to find out what sells in modern times. People don't want to read about war and refugees, it doesn't affect them and doesn't interest them. They would much rather read about the stupid tweets and sex scandals of political leaders. The media is merely capitalizing on this and who can blame them.

Victoria  said:

That's really good for the media companies. People take the first thing they read as the truth when actually it is just fake news.

I have absolutely no time for Trump!
People must not always believe what they hear/read because people attempt to believe the negative more then the positive.

Jessica A  said:

I wonder if the Politicians don't get some sort of kick back from the media houses? A 'one hand washes the other' type of scenario, media houses push the agenda of the politican whilst the politician catches the eye of the public to bolster the media coverage!

Just a thought...

I think political movements should be in the eye of the media at all times, irrespective of how mundane they may be.

Jadine Richards  said:

It is really amusing that because of Presidents Trumps antics the media are doing so well, he is essentially keeping these businesses alive. That must really drive him nuts!

Whether a story is true or false the sensation from viewers has the power to make things profitable and with any reality show ratings will go through the roof especially when it comes to President Trump.
