Canada has targeted highly skilled people for quite some time. Right now, there are approximately 570,000 international students in Canada which is 60% up on three years ago. In the last 12 months they increased their population through immigration by 425,000 people. In particular, they are looking for entrepreneurs and MBA’s and when I read about things like this I always wonder why we in South Africa did not target more of the people from Eastern Europe after communism collapsed.
So many talented people wanted to get out of Ukraine, Russia and the old Soviet Bloc States. That is an incredible amount of highly qualified people including doctors and engineers who were all looking for a new place to call home. I guess racial politics in South Africa would have made that difficult, but I do think that countries that want to succeed need to always be ready to target talented people in a country, who are not happy with that country anymore, to bring them to their country. Hardworking people end up paying a lot of tax to their new country and are always an asset to the new country. One can only imagine, for example, how many people want to get out of Venezuela now.

I've seen many of these advertisements on social media, and think it is a very good way of attracting hard-working, qualified individuals to a country that has so much to offer.

Talented qualified people can never be a negative for any country it is always a wonderful asset to have - and as mentioned they will pay more tax which in turn will boost infrastructure in a country and not to mention health care systems. I do also think that talented people look for positives in a country before they just up and move to a new country.

I've seen a couple of adds on social media about this. I have a friend that moved there a year or so ago. They seem very happy. I think I would not be able to survive the cold winter months.

This is very clever of Canada. Obviously having hardworking and intelligent people will hugely benefit the economy of that country. If a country looks after their citizens, the people will always work hard.

In South Africa in order for us to target skilled people we needed a wise president but I don't want to lose hope and I still believe that one day things will be better for our country

Many people I know have considered emigrating to Canada. Apparently it's a good place to work as a pilot. Personally the weather there is enough to put me off!

Canada has 3 cities with more than a million people, 51 cities with between 100,000 and 1 million people, and 235 cities with between 10,000 and 100,000 people. The largest city in Canada is Toronto, with a population of 2,600,000 people.

I have heard that they want to increase the population, and it is best to rather have qualified individuals coming in than people who will rather just take and not give back. And why not, for a better life than the one you are having in the country you are residing in that is in shambles....It is nice that Canada is giving people the opportunity

The only thing is we have a lot of hard working qualified people in South Africa, meaning South Africa does not have to get people from other countries, but the hard working South Africans are not given the opportunities they deserve, thus they are all going to Canada, New Zealand where they are valued.

I think the key factor South Africa needs to note here is - Canada is accepting skilled individuals, not just anyone. Our border regulations are not strict enough honestly, I think we'd be well on our way if we better controlled illegal immigration.

Almost every second person is looking at moving to Canada. At this point and I don't mean to moan but of course people are looking at leaving South Africa especially. We are fed up. We want to get out as in yesterday! The government also make it hard by constantly lowering the pass rate - not really highly skilled are we? Nonetheless, Canada is known to be an immigrant and expat-friendly country!

i can only imagine that, at the rate skilled people and business owners fleeing south africa, the south african government doesn't want them.

It's nice to see other countries working together to help each other with work opportunities and more, it would be a good thing if where to happen in South Africa but we all now that it won't happen because South Africans have pride and it clouds their judgment.

Wow that's so amazing for Canada! I agree that if countries want to succeed they need to get people from other countries, where they are not happy to bring them to work in their country and that country is likely to succeed.

Canada is such a smart country, if one looks at the layout of their politics and ministers (people who actually have experience in the fields that they are ministers of), you can see that there is a lot to learn from them.

It is only in a countries favor to accept hardworking and educated people.
Canada is a successful country and I believe SA can learn from them.
