During my recent efforts at skiing and getting quite nervous at the number of people I saw being carted off on a daily basis, either by helicopters or ambulances to a hospital, I decided to research how dangerous skiing was. What surprised me is that it fell a lot further down the list of dangerous sports than a number of sports I take part in! The number one most dangerous sport in the world, and I certainly don’t take part in that, is base jumping. That has quite a high fatality rate which I am not surprised about, where if people jump off rocks and try and glide with parachutes or even smaller bodysuits these days and avoid hitting other rocks or landing too hard! The second most dangerous sport is cycling followed by running. At first thought you may think they are very healthy and indeed they are. I did not go into the statistics, but no doubt a lot of the danger in those sports involves motorcars and being hit and injured by a motorcar while you are running or riding your bicycle. That will obviously give you a claim in South Africa against the Road Accident Fund, but that is not much consolation! It is just a reminder that statistics are always fascinating, and that some of the healthy things you do are dangerous in their own way – even walking on the side of the road can be dangerous, as we know, not to mention shopping at Sandton City during an armed robbery - that occasion, that happens infrequently but does happen, when an armed gang runs in and holds up a jewellery shop. I don’t think on the whole though that it is any excuse not to do them, but it is no wonder that cyclists are known as “organ donors” in South Africa, given the driving on our roads.
I don’t like riding a bike out on the streets and prefer to ride around a gated community, but not everyone lives in a gated community with a little less, and slower traffic in it. I think because you run at a slower speed you almost have more time to react to a bad driver than you do as a cyclist and to me, running is a lot safer than cycling. Both cycling and running, although it is very boring and the scenery does not change unless you are looking at a video screen, can be done indoors or at your local gym.

As an avid runner and cyclist I agree that there are many dangers on the roads, some dangers have nothing to do with motorists. I think that anyone wanting to run or cycle on the roads should always be mindful of the motorists, avoid using headphones and where possible run or cycle with someone or in a group in attempt to curb some of the dangers.

In every sport there is what is called "assumed danger". This indicates that every sport has danger associated with it. Love of anything you do will always come before danger.

I think in any sport there is some type danger to it. I never knew cycling was second on the most dangerous sports or wouldn't even think running would be third but it does make sense why they would be the top three most dangerous.

I agree cycling must be indoors or at a specific marked area the cyclist it is so quick that a driver loses control of the cyclist loses control and there’s an accident. I’ve see skiing on TV and it does look very dangerous.

Any sport is dangerous but when you have a love and passion for it for you it might not at all seem dangerous.

I agree that cycling is also one of the most dangerous sports and think that some motorists do not have a respect to cyclists

If you are prepared to do these sort of things, be also prepared for anything that can happen. No thanks, I would rather not risk it.

I think many people do it for the thrill! I for one would rather play it safe. I don't like participating in anything that's going to cause me any kind of possible pain! But I guess you can't always live life that way!

People are always looking for something to fulfill their needs...whether it be boring or packed with adrenaline...Regardless of what sport you are in, it will all have an element of danger...I mean...your could get struck by lightning playing golf, or swimming etc

In Afrikaans we say "Elke sport het sy beserings" and this couldn't be more true. Every single sport has an element of danger and I think that's why people love it so much.

Any physical activity is dangerous. But it’s a way of getting and staying healthy. I guess if it`s your time - It’s your time. Just enjoy while it last.

I agree lots of sport are dangerous on its own ways but skiing looks more dangerous if something happens to you will you are up there then you know that is over.

On of the greatest rock climbers of our generation, Dean Potter, actually died base jumping a few years ago. It takes a special type of adrenaline junky to base jump but I think it's just people trying to push the limits. People are always coming up with more extreme things to do because all the low risk things have already been done thousands of times by thousands of people. If you watch the Oscar winning documentary "Free Solo", it's a great example of this.

I enjoy running but rather at gym or when I go hiking, if you really want a workout run up Lions Head in Cape Town your legs will burn but at least you won't get hit by a car.
I have bungee jumped, bridge swing and abseil but I’ll never do base jumping #1000waystodie

Besides being involved in a MVA there is the danger of being robbed. There is really no winning in this country. These criminals find opportunity in everything. It is extremely disturbing.

I have no need for any of those thrills, Never got into the cycling thing, not sure i can even still ride a bike lol. Im sure each and every sport has its dangers. One would think that a big contact sport like rugby, American football or Icehockey would fall under the top 3.

Personally not fond of cardiovascular sports, such as running and cycling. I prefer being in the gym when it comes to fitness rather than on the roads, I'm genuinely afraid to be out on the roads.

Base Jumping is something that I will never do - It really is an extremely scary and dangerous thing to do! I will happily go bungee jumping, sky diving, etc but never will I ever do base jumping. I can believe that cycling is a dangerous sport because the cyclists that I have come across on the road are so reckless and really just do as they please. Bicycle lanes are so important.

I prefer to run on a treadmill. I don't like being in the streets. Never mind the dangerous sport's. I'm more scared of the dangerous people out there.

What a coincidence. Last night when I couldn't sleep I was watching a show on Discovery channel I think it was. It was about this base jumping extreme sport. One of the inserts was about U.S adrenaline junkie, Jeb Corliss. He has jumped from many sites including Howick Falls in Kwazulu Natal. It was almost fatal - he survived but broke his back. I use to do skydiving as a hobby - on my own. I had about 16 jumps when my instructor died - jumping out of a plane. It put me off for life. But when you think about it there are so many other ways in which you can die so hell, live for the adrenaline that you enjoy because there are so many other chances that your life could end. #YOLO

Base jumping has been on my bucket list for a few years. However after hearing that it is quite dangerous I am reconsidering it. I also think cycling in a busy road is often irresponsible and very dangerous. Some cyclers cycle in the middle of the road as if they are like a car on the road. This blows my mind every time

it's all quite interesting and the strange part is that the more the dangerous the sport is the more the people want to do it. No matter how we tell people that it's dangerous it's more like you are pulling them to do it even more

Now I am even more glad that I have a stationary bike. Base jumping did not surprise me, just watching them it is clear that it is a very dangerous sport. But I would never had thought that cycling and running is next on the list. However, your point about the drivers on the roads gives total validity to them being dangerous.

I am not much of a runner, but when I do I would prefer to do it in the gym. Except for the possibility of being hit by a car, there is also a chance of being robbed.

I am surprised that running is a dangerous sport? If you run where there is no cars or anything then it can;t be dangerous, unless you run down a mountain and you slip or fall down the mountain.I think I will rather run on the treadmill in a gym where i cannot get hurt.
