Waymo is one of the many projects that Google works on, apart from its search engines. It is a self-driving car project which began in 2009 and many business analysts think if Google is to have another major success that success may well be Waymo. The self-driving cars will transport you around, driven, according to Google by the world’s most experienced driver, and they have trademarked that expression – the world’s most experienced driver! Obviously, they are talking about a computer driving people and they say they have driven over 10 million miles on public roads and 7 billion miles in simulation. That effectively boils down to hundreds of years of human driving experience, meaning that no human being could ever have as much experience as their system does when it comes to driving. They have a very interesting website at https://waymo.com and I should just mention that of course, given that petrol is on the way out, it is naturally an electric self-driving vehicle. At the moment, you can take part in the programme and drive around the streets of Phoenix, Arizona, a large American city, that together with the neighbouring area of Scottsdale, has a population of about 5 million people.

Self driving cars actually sound pretty neat and much safer than people driven cars in the long run. You don't have to worry about people driving drunk or excessively recklessly

I am fascinated by just how much work and research this had to take. I would want to try it once, given the car should drive extremely slow, and not on a busy road. Thereafter I think I will just go back to driving myself around.

I read abut this last year when they were busy with the demo, now I see they have fleet is about 600 cars. i honestly won't trust these cars , i like to be in control when driving.

Very interesting, what can go wrong when you are passenger of this vehicle? Oh well, better to be positive and defiantly there are security meagers are taken by Google. I would like to experience as well driving in the car like this, will look in to this web site!

Some many people for it and against it. I think one should have the experience before making a decision. It almost like trusting your life with an uber driver, taxi driver or bus driver. You will never know their experiences and how they drive and even then there are no guarantees that the driver wont make an accident or able to avoid an accident. I for one would love to experience the robot driving me around.

I am still so skeptical about self driving cars - There is still so many unknown variables like if it malfunctions do we then have the choice to switch it to 'manual' driving. Will they be able to design it well enough that we could use it in SA with all the taxi drivers etc.

I am still skeptical about this, what if the computer has a glitch or a virus and someone can hack this system. Maybe i have seen to many movies but it will take time for a lot of people to trust this idea.

I understand with cars today, when a vehicle is close it begins beeping as the sensors are triggered but what happens when, like Angelique says, taxis are involved. I feel as though even if the car was able to act as quickly as the taxi, who's to say by swerving to avoid, would not create another collision? I just think it's all too risky..

I can only imagine asking for a taxi, and this car pitches up by itself and you get in and see no driver, something out of a sci-fi movie. Always good to see we are moving in that direction with technology, im sure once cars drive themselves there will be less accidents

That is something, though still a little nervous to be in a self driving vehicle...but then again, look at how far Uber has come as I am sure people would be skrptical to get into a vehicle with a complete stranger...and their driving is not always the best...so take a chance. Though David's comment does make a point though.

I think when we all move past having to see a driver in the driver's seat of a car, we will embrace this idea. My only concern is I will really miss driving!

A self-driven car is definitely great, but the risk is strong. One day the car will drive smoothly while you relax and let it drive by itself and the next day, it can have a computer / memory problem or glitch, having the same accidental rates as a self-driven car. Although the increase of technology as well as artificial intelligence is making life and careers easier, it is at the same time, making a lot of things harder as well - a catch 22.

A car that is self-driven seems like a great idea, however, it is alarming that artificial intelligence is taking over. I would not trust a self-driven car as there can be a glitch or a problem at one point with the car and it can have erroneous consequences. I prefer to be the driver of my own car and not have a computer-based program driving for me

That is really awesome to have cars that are self-driving. I feel that there will be less accidents if everyone is in self-driving cars. Also on the other hand i'm not sure if it will be safe to be in a self-driving car because you wont be in control.

I for one will prefer driving than to mostly let someone else drive, let alone get in a car that is self driven, i doubt it will work for me. I love driving but i will take part in the program, just to see if it will work for me or not.

I don't know how safe I would feel sitting in a car that is self driving. I wonder how it would act in emergency situations to avoid accidents. Would you then classify as a passenger in a motor vehicle? Very interesting to think about. Technology has come so far.

I think this is the best idea ever! Some people, even though they have a license still drive very very very bad. It's always a race and they don't realize that they're putting others around them in danger! 90% of South Africa drivers needs to rather travel in "Waymo" then drive themselves!

i'm all for technology, and computers taking over the boring repetitive tasks. what would really interest me is the programmed choices the car makes. if there are 2 pedestrians crossing the street and a collision is impossible, but the computer can choose to only hit one of those pedestrians, which does it choose to kill - the little child or the pensioner?

This sounds like a very interesting and futuristic type of invention, but I honestly cannot tell if I will ever feel completely safe in a car driven by a computer.. Perhaps I'm just not up to speed with the increases in technology yet or perhaps I am a bit too skeptical. What I do know is that it will greatly reduce traffic and travelling expenses which the world desperately needs.
