Tesla introduces long-range vehicles

Tesla has just brought out new versions of both their Model S and Model X.  The new Model S can go approximately 592km on one charge before you will need to charge it again and the Model X can go 520km on one charge.  In other words, you are getting to the point where you will be able to drive an electric car from Johannesburg to Durban without charging.  No doubt the improvements will continue every year and although Tesla has not come to South Africa yet, one must not forget that they provide Superchargers around the countries where they are based, like in America and Canada.  That allows you to stop on your journey at a charger, while you pop into a restaurant to have some coffee and a snack, that will recharge your car faster than your chargers at home can charge it, adding in let’s say 400km of charging in about an hour.  In other words, if you felt that you needed another 50 or 100km to get to Durban on your way from Johannesburg, you could stop at the Supercharger for 15 minutes and that would be more than enough to top up your vehicle while you take a break.  I am sure there are those who would say that they would like to drive the whole way to Durban without taking a break, but it is suggested for good driving that you should generally stop every 2 or 3 hours on a journey and I certainly stop at the halfway point on the way to Durban.

In any event, all of this is theoretical, because Tesla has not launched in South Africa and perhaps the cost of putting Superchargers and things like that all over South Africa only to sell a small number of the vehicles does not make sense, given that there are not that many people in South Africa, as a percentage of the population, who could afford a Tesla.  It will be interesting to see if any manufacturer, at the moment, is prepared to invest in South Africa to that extent in terms of the infrastructure.  Without it, electric cars cant really take off if you have to charge at your home only.

I would not mind driving a Telsa but yes I can imagine the price and also I dont think it would be a best seller in South Africa.

I think we will most likely only experience this is SA after some time! However the advantage of this is that they would have already fixed up all the smaller issues and by then we should have a perfected model!

Is our country fully equipped for these kinds of cars? I don't think so...
Although going electric is a lot cleaner, it is a lot more expensive and not all of us can afford it.
Very interesting to know though! :)

Very interesting article, and I am with both my hands up for the electrical vehicle. Very sad that South Africa is far behind from first world countries, it will still take time for us to catch up!

I think electric cars are awesome - However only once SA accommodates charging your car at garages, then only will I get one -There is nothing worst than being stuck.

Im sure those that really want the car will import it. But i do hope SA starts to more towards electrical cars. We are really behind when it comes to allot of things. But this is something that will help the environment, but then again with our eskom how reliable will it be

South Africa will probably only see this once its outdated. Just like other technology, South Africa only gets to experience it years and years later.

Since SA has already have electric motorbikes. I think electric cars are coming soon.

I honestly don't think these cars will work in SA. With all the load shedding. The way our country is going right now , economically wise . I had a look on the website they look so awesome.

I think that electric cars are an amazing feat and will increase in popularity in the future. For now, though, they are simply not practical in South Africa's current economic climate.

It is not that they have not started...Hyde Park has a spot where you are able to charge your car...Unsure if there are any more around...I think it will a really good ideda to invest in same and try and make the world more environmentally appealing.

I don't think such a thing will work in SA. A lot of people don't have the patience to wait so long for the electric car to charge.

I agree with Patrick. I haven't seen spots at petrol ports to recharge these cars. I might be mistaken but I would feel so uneasy knowing that I might need to recharge and there isn't any places to do so. I think as soon as the country can ensure that the infrastructure for these cars are up to date, maybe then consumers will start buying these cars.

We still have a lot of catching up infrastructure wise to do. My bet is that it will take another 10 years for this cars to come to south Africa

I think electric cars is the way to go, although it might be expensive in the beginning i think in the long run you will be saving a lot of money. I'm sure Tesla will make their cars go even further distances in the future.

I have seen electric chargers at the garage stop in Harrismith when we went down to Durban in December. There was no one using the charger whilst I was waiting. It seems like it is not a very popular concept in this country. If one considers that we are only now jumping on the "save the world from plastic" effort then it shows we are still a long way from electric cars being considered.

I agree with Kathryn about investing but I also feel that South Africa wants specific change and this strays away from that. If you can't change one thing, try roll out something new to distract use from the issues in our country.

I think electric cars are definitely the future. There are many pros such as being good for the environment and safer in that the driver is forced to take a break whilst traveling long distance however, I don't think that electric cars would be profitable in SA just yet. The economic circumstances as well as the need for new infrastructure to support these cars are just not an option here anytime soon.

Ruby  said:

I am very excited about the arrival of electric cars, I think it is good for the environment and maintenance is low. Yes, charging bases will be a problem for now for long distance traveling, but for those traveling short distance, it is a big win. Our local Nissan Leaf, for example can go for 387km without being charged!

Kathryn  said:

It would be great if the manufacturers are willing to invest in South Africa for the needed infrastructure. Electric cars are so much better for the environment and while the cars are expensive, fuel prices are always on the rise.

In today's life people often would like to get from one point to another without having to wait on anyone or anything let alone for a car to take 15 minutes to charge. That would really not fit well in South Africa. If people feel the need to be impatient at the petrol garage what still waiting on a supercharger.

Courtney  said:

I think the electronic cars are best. People get tired behind the wheel because they don't stop to take a brake! This is a brilliant idea.

there are already electric motorcycles on the road in SA. bizarre. see the headlight approaching, you move over, and silence as they pass. Don't know that i'd buy an electric bike, but certainly a car.

I think the Tesla is an amazing car, some malls do have charging points for the electric cars here in SA, but these luxury electric cars I don't think would work that great in SA.

Michelle Smillie  said:

The electric cars are definitely advanced technology and it seems logical that only the first-world countries have access to it at the moment. Just like everything else, I would expect South Africa as a second-world country to still wait a bit before getting Tesla and electric cars. Is it just me who feels like we are entering the stage of "futuristic technology" quicker than anticipated?

Bianca N  said:

I don't think this would be in our country any time soon. It is a luxury that the majority of us would not be able to afford. It would have been nice though.

Lucretia  said:

In my opinion, something like this will not go down well in South Africa at the moment, the reason being, i would like to see people stopping to charge and having to wait an hour. People here always seem to be in such a hurry. Definitely not a vehicle for a 3rd world country where the majority are fighting to survive let alone having to pay for such luxuary.
