Unemployment rate rises

We now have the highest unemployment rate in South Africa in a decade.  Our unemployment rate was 27,6% at the end of last year and it has now, for the first quarter of this year, risen to 29%.  With a growing population, more and more young people entering the job market and no growth in our economy, I can only see unemployment getting higher.  There are now 6,7 million people without jobs with 101,000 people entering the labour force every 3 months, but the economy only creating 53,000 jobs per quarter.  What that means is that every 3 months or every quarter, there are another 48,000 people who do not have a job.

Lastly, we must remember that that is the official unemployment rate and most people believe that the actual unemployment rate is much higher.  The data does show that 40% of people aged 15 to 34 did not have a job and that too is obviously a tremendous concern.  We need to get this economy moving.

The route of every problem in the world is overpopulation unfortunately. As much as we may criticize our government for not giving everyone a job, it is unfortunately impossible as there are just too many of us.

It is quite sad to sometimes see a Graduate standing at a stop street with a qualification such as a Bcom or an LLB and is struggling to get employment. Everyone thinks by just getting a degree it will immediately open doors for you however you have to literally put yourself out there and not wait for the door to open but make it happen yourself. It takes a lot of courage to go and stand with a board at a stop street and I applaud anyone who takes pictures of these graduates and place them up on social media to share cause even if we can help one or two of these graduates find employment it would make such a tremendous difference in reducing crime

It is so scary to see how many people are struggling.

I count my blessings everyday

That is scary! No wonder the crime is so bad. So many unemployed people that are trying to get by. Unfortunately the honest truth is. it is not easy for anyone anymore to find a job. So many smaller companies are closing or retrenching staff. There are to many problems that need to be ironed out before South Africa will have a Strong economy injection.

It is very sad knowing so many people out there are unemployed and cannot provide for their family. It can also be a reason as to why crime stats are so high too.

Yip because people are too scared to open their own businesses in this country. Why because it is not safe. Look what happens everyday to these people. I wouldn't want to open my own business here either. Also this countries population is getting out of hand.

These stats are so terrifying to read and seems like it is not getting any better. Something needs to be done about this and very soon.

it's really sad and so scary to think how many people are unemployed, I'm really thankful to say that I have a job.

This is a terrifying statistic. We have been looking for other opportunities for my husband but it just seems impossible. What about the future of our children? They use to say that it would be impossible to get a job without some kind of diploma or degree but now that some South Africans have that they still can't get employment. I read an interesting article where it stated that 45 people leave South Africa on a daily basis and this is exactly why!

This is undoubtedly an ongoing battle for South Africa which I honestly think is going to get progressively worse. The government should really go back to the drawing board and really consider ways in which they can increase job opportunities.

Had an Uber driver the other day who got a BCOM in finance, and look at where is was - times are tough and this country is slowly declining every single day. The amount of people that are on the street begging is something - and it is everyone and everywhere...I think that one should be grateful for what they have

I can honestly say that I am now terrified for South Africa's future- There were slight moments of hope for improvements however it seems as though things are just getting worst.

It is Shocking to say the least. South Africa needs a rebooting, we do not want to end up like Germany after World War One. We need a big injection into our economy.

This is so sad .Most people stopped looking for work because there is no work out there .It's bad and it keeps getting worse. Our government must start making plans for South Africa

The lack of growth in our economy has put many small to medium businesses in dire financial situations that have forced many employers to retrench their employees and for businesses to be liquidated.

The constant imbalance in this country is just horrible. This country keeps gaining problem after problem, I don't see change anytime soon even though they're insisting there will be.

This is so sad, Company's are closing all over the place. Overseas owners are pulling out because of the bad crime rate that has also increase.

It is just sad how so many people don't have an income. That's when drug's and stealing comes in, to get some money for feeding the family's. I know of someone that does have 4 children and every one of them is successful. I also know of someone that only has one kid and she is struggling to get a work.
If you come for an interview they only choose the "pretty" one's lately, not the educated one's. That's sad but true.

Lucretia  said:

I don't think it is only the economy that needs to get moving, I do believe we need to start slowing down with having so many children. The days of having big families is long gone. A government can only create so many jobs, the rest of the population needs to work with it.......I do believe that is just as important.

It is such a shocking and scary statistic and it reminds me to be so grateful to be employed. This has got to be improved somehow, and really fast too.

Although I do not understand why a 15 year old is counted as not having a job, these figures are surprising, and not in a good way. This makes me so glad that I have a job and reminds us that we should look after our jobs.

Fikile  said:

It is so sad to see people with degrees and diplomas sitting at home and not earning anything. Most people stopped looking for work after what happened at Standard Bank, people now understand that technology is taking over and they are losing their jobs and they are also not taking changes in getting their hurts broken or even let down by the people their approaching in terms of work. It's bad and it keeps getting worse and this is not good for our country.

david  said:
on Wednesday 28-Aug-19 07:40 AM
as i understand it the official unemployment rate also excludes people who have stopped looking for a job.

sandra  said:
on Wednesday 28-Aug-19 07:26 AM
And it just keeps on getting worse and worse. People who do have a job also have a risk factor of ie, retrenchment. This is why there is so much crime stats as well, how else are people supposed to survive? Government must do something about it but as usual, empty promises will be made or even "better", a blind-eye will be thrown on this matter.
