Vaping related deaths

There are massive investigations going on in numerous states in America into vaping at the moment.  It appears that there have been a number of deaths from vaping as well as outbreaks of lung disease.  At the moment they don’t know what exactly is causing this, other than it is affecting people who vape nicotine and those who vape marijuana, with ingredients such as THC, the part of marijuana that makes people high.

At the moment the suspicion focuses on Vitamin E in the vapes or specifically oil derived from Vitamin E.  That oil is known as Vitamin E Acetate and it appears that when it cools down in your lungs it covers the inside of your lungs with thick oil.  At the time of writing this blog there have already been 6 deaths and in excess of 450 people across 33 States in America, who had been hospitalised for this.  It seems that the build-up of the fluid inside your lungs causes rare forms of pneumonia.  In some cases a terrible carcinogenic, called formaldehyde has been found inside the vape liquid and the advice at the moment is to stop vaping at all until these studies are concluded.

My favourite part about all this fuss is that you can see how entrenched the tobacco companies are in politics and big business. The vaping ban only aims at preventing "non tobacco" flavours because these supposedly are aimed at children. Since vaping was introduced in 2010/2011 there have been 39 deaths in the US to date as a result of vaping related illnesses. On the other hand, cigarette smoking is responsible for approximately 480,000 deaths in the US PER YEAR. I am not disputing that vaping is bad, it 100% is but you can't have double standards like this and expect it to make any significant difference.

I see more and more stories about vaping. Smoking is bad for your health whether it's vaping or cigarettes, each to their own.

I am not a smoker and therefore believe that vaping is still bad for your health and I have been trying to convince my brother to stop smoking, he has since gone from cigarettes to vaping. We as human beings are not supposed to be smoking so any kind of smoking is bad for your lungs and health.

There are numerous studies being undertaken regarding vaping and as a result, so much uncertainty surrounding it. I have never vaped but what I hear and read about vaping makes it an unappealing habit to me.

I don't like this vaping movement. I just think that if you filter anything through oil, what you ultimately inhale is a lot more dense and will settle more heavily in the lungs. There's a reason so little is exhaled once inhaled.

Since day one I have not been a fan of vaping. One hears so many stories of vapes over heating and exploding in peoples faces

People should just stick to smoking cigarettes rather than vaping. Vaping is more harmful to your body as there are much more chemicals added.

I think it depends what you vape. There are example CBD vapes. Contains no THC so no psychedelic high, Only health benefits. One of the quickest ways in getting CBD in your body is by inhaling, goes straight to your lungs. Those who abuse and land up in hospital are most likely using high content nicotine vapes infused with other things which are probably not even been manufactured in ISO Labs. Everyone has there own opinion. Smoking cigarettes causes can cancer however studies, surveys and research can show some people suggest using CBD in the treatment of cancer and vaping would be the quickest way of getting in your body. My opinion is everything in moderation. Its the same as what you eat. Eating to much fat will cause cholesterol but then again your body needs fat to help your body absorb some nutrients and produce important hormones.

Smoking in genial is not good for people health but vaping is worse. It puts a lot of water on your lungs. Each person for their own

When vaping initially became a thing I invested in a twisp to try and kick the pesky cigarette habit. Taking this into consideration I am fairly happy I was stubborn and inconsistent and failed miserably and my attempting to switch to a "healthier option".

In my opinion, it's the power of the vape and the heating of the coil that could be dangerous. Overuse of the vape could lead to overheating and explosion surely at some point. Then again, we always say: Everything in moderation!
I don't vape, however I always think it is more overdoing things that lead to death. It's not from one or two little puffs.

Original is always better...it is the same when people said butter is bad for you - then low and behold, it is still bad for you but not as bad as margarine etc I have never trusted vaing and the amount of smoke o r whatever it is that is blown out, cannot be good for you. Nonetheless, smoking is a horrible habit

Everyone is on such a hype about vaping and its annoying, you may as well smoke. There is a lot of negative in a lot that we do so I guess its each to their own. I guess everyone is going to die from something anyway.

I think there is none type of smoke that is good for human’s health. That vitamin E acetate sounds more dangerous.

Melissa  said:

I don't think any type of smoking is healthy for you as it all enters your lungs, however I think vaping is more dangerous as you inhale more smoke compared to cigarettes.

Daniella  said:

I've never been a fan of vaping or hubbly bubbly - I think people are excessive with vaping they vape every few minutes and the amount of smoke that comes out after inhalation just doesn't seem healthy- I have seen that there are a lot of vape tick competitions and that could be a contributor

I have read about a few of the cases where people get sick of vape. My friend got sick for vaping the Dr told her to stop using it.I will rather smoke Cigarettes the vape. But i must say any smoking is bad for you.

Anything you over due will have some kind of negative effect on a person.

I personally think that people who vape "over do" it as they will not walk around without their vape and taking a drag every 2 minutes ,whereas people who smoke will have a cigarette every 30 minutes to an hour, but with that said there are no studies to back up claims that vaping is less harmful than conventional smoke.

Thembi  said:

Megan  said:

Death is inevitable, people who smoke can get lung cancer and people who don't smoke can get lung cancer. I think the stats taken for this study are interesting to note and observe but if you do anything in moderation? Results vary and I think we can look at the circumstances of different areas and get different results. I agree no proven deaths in South Africa thus far, what is the difference here than America?

Thabitha  said:

I have heard that Vaping also helps people to stop smoking cigarettes, the only problem is that people also use the vamp to smoke weed and it's not made for that. You vamp you have lung problems, you smoke cigarettes still you have lung problem, maybe it's time people start looking into this.

They must take Vaping of the market if it is causing deaths, I have read about the deaths smoking is not good for you why would a vape be a good idea if the liquid covers your lungs.

Michelle Smillie  said:
on Wednesday 02-Oct-19 09:43 AM
I believe that there might be something hazardous in vape liquids, just as there are in cigarettes for example, but I also think this has to do with the amount of vaping more than the ingredients itself. People falsely believe that Vaping is much healthier than smoking whereas it is actually very similar, and as a result they Vape at higher levels with more liquid more often, resulting in the effects being worse than if they smoked one cigarette to replace it.

Clare  said:

I have never thought vaping to be healthy, for a while now they have spoken about vaping causing "popcorn" lungs - damage to the small airways in your lungs from vaping, why would anyone want to do that - lungs are life. We have so much pollution to worry about, why then still add to the problem.

patrick  said:

Cigarettes Companies are probably happy because this has been their biggest rivals. Whatever way one chooses to look at vaping and smoking cigarettes, both are just unhealthy habits which our bodies can do without.

Bianca Taljaard  said:

Smoking is just bad for you, does not matter how and what you inhale - it is just bad for your lungs and body! It is just amazing how some articles advise people: "who do use e-cigarette products should monitor themselves for symptoms (e.g., cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever) and promptly seek medical attention for any health concerns"
Why do you then go ahead and vape in the first place?
Oh well I am not a smoker and have never been one, so not for me to judge or advise!!!

sandra  said:
on Wednesday 02-Oct-19 07:19 AM
A lot of people have a reported history of e-cigarette product use, or vaping, and no consistent evidence of an infectious cause has been discovered. Therefore, the suspected cause is a chemical exposure. No single product or substance has been linked to all lung injury cases. As far as South Africa is concerned, our country has no confirmed vaping-related deaths
