Zillow calculates the value of your home

I was fascinated by an app that is popular in America, namely Zillow.  I am not sure when it will come to South Africa, but some people will love it and some people will not.  Zillow allows you, while driving or walking through an area to simply indicate your location and it will tell you about the valuation of all the houses around you.

If for example a friend of yours invited you to their house and while you were there you would be able to see, not only what the app currently values their house at, but when they bought their house and how much they paid!  In other words, there is no more nonsense of people alleging how much their house is worth or not – because an app is going to give you a very good idea whether they are exaggerating or not.

It is of course, not going to tell you how much their mortgage is, so you will never know how much of the house is financed, although these days most of people’s houses are largely financed and deposits are usually small.  The app uses artificial intelligence tools and their computers apparently can view and understand images of the houses that are uploaded from satellite photographs and ascertain whether or not the house has a swimming pool, etc.

Wow, where is the technology going, this is brilliant, now you don't have to listen to the lies real estate agents feed you.

Well, that's not invasive at all...

That being said, the concept is not a new one. Any diligent property buyer already had this information at hand when doing research. This simply means that the information is more easily accessible.

Nice, I love looking at houses and checking the value of some of them.

I thank my lucky stars that I am a renter at heart. Owning property in this day and age is an extremely risky business.

I find that to be a little invasive to be honest, interesting but invasive. Suppose it is in peoples nature to be curious of others property value. But it would be very helpful when wanting to buy in a certain neighborhood, to make sure yo uare buying in the right place

This is a good idea for when purchasing property. Instead of just blindly following what an estate agent or seller may tell you the property is worth or allegedly how much they paid for it in the first place, you can double check on the app instead of finding out later that you paid too much.

What, this is just weird? I guess it can be helpful to choose a good neighbourhood when you are looking for houses.

This app will come in handy for those who want to compete with family, friends or neighbors to see whose house was more expensive or who has the highest valued house. (roll eyes)

That is quite an interesting app, I do think it invades peoples privacy though. This app could be very useful.

I am definitely not a fan of this App. I think it’s slightly intrusive. Surely people are allowed to keep certain things private especially your property! Maybe it will be useful to agents but I personally feel that no person should be entitled to this unless they are an agent or its business related!

Although it is a nice app and it would come in handy when you want to buy a house. I still do not want everyone coming to have coffee and looking at the price we bought the house for or friends and family that drives past our house and look at the value of it. Family members, friend and even the public should not know your financial status. I consider other people privacy and they should too.

If you type in an address in google and click on property 24 it shows you Property price, trends, statistics, valuation and sales history- its quite interesting to see however I don't know if it would be quite as accurate as Zillow.

There are so many ways to view this app.

1. This is making a burglar's job really easy... If your house is expensive, then you will probably have items of value inside your house worth stealing.
2. It could be taking jobs away from real estate agents as they will not be needed if you are interested in the value of a house.
3. If you see a specific type of house and like it, you could re-design your house to look more expensive and basically revalue your house in a way...

This app will come quite in handy to Real Estate Agents and Auctioneers when offers are made on houses to determine the real value thereof. I think it would also be quite interesting to see how the value of a house has increased over the years

I guess that this will be a very useful app for those wanting to purchase a home in an area they may not be familiar in. But at the same time I also feel like it is an invasion of your privacy..

It is a cool app to have if someone is in competition with another person concerning what amount of money was spent by the person on a house etc. For me it is for someone that wants to "flash wealth." I believe in the old traditions of viewing the house and going door to door to search what you want.

Angelique Jurgens  said:

What an excellent app for nosy people! Also quite convenient if you are not familiar. However if you go online on property24 or private property it usually says when the home was last sold and what it was sold for. Honestly, unless you are wealthy, there is no way you have a home without it being financed.

What is the benefit of knowing the value of a house that isn't on sale? I guess it could be a guideline for people looking to build a similar style house to see what could be the value of it at some stage but how often are people going to do that. I think its an interesting app to have to see the prices of those houses idolized on shows but that's it really...

Bianca N  said:
on Tuesday 29-Oct-19 10:20 AM
It could be good in terms of buying a house, to make sure they do not rip you off and charge more than the house is worth, but I feel like being able to see how much a friend / family member's house costs has got nothing to do with you. Maybe it could be modified to only show the value of houses that are for sale? Knowing how much somebody paid for their house is, in my opinion, a personal matter and if they felt like sharing the information with you, they would have without you having to look at an app.

Why would someone even think of that...

Fikile  said:

This is how people loose their jobs. If this app goes global the real estate agents loose their jobs because now you won't need to call them and ask to help you find a house near a park or anywhere close to a road, because with the sound of the app you can just drive around and just look at the value of the house's on the app and compare.

Lucretia  said:
on Monday 28-Oct-19 09:41 AM
In terms of purchasing a property this would be a good app but to sit and look at what people paid for their homes etc, well that is personal and of no-one else's business in my opinion. What happened to the rights of privacy......

Jadine Richards  said:
on Monday 28-Oct-19 09:06 AM
I do not like the sound of this app. To me it sounds like more of an invasion of privacy than anything else. I feel like the value of your property and how much it was bought for should be something that requires your permission prior to being made so easily available to the public. General valuations of an area are one thing but this I do not like.

Sarah  said:
on Monday 28-Oct-19 08:56 AM
This app only does Estimate , so people must not think it is giving the right amount. I agree some people will feel insulted by this app

Claudia B  said:
on Monday 28-Oct-19 08:46 AM
Wow this app sounds really amazing, it will most definitely come in handy for some people and it would be nice to know what the value would be more or less and for some people it would not be so great as they would see the personal information.

Michelle Smillie  said:
on Monday 28-Oct-19 08:41 AM
Although it sounds like an interesting app, the dangers are staring me straight in the eye. It is a world-wide belief that an expensive property contains expensive furniture and objects, although I am not always sure that this is true, but it is the belief nonetheless. As such, I think thieves will use apps like these to ascertain what properties will give them the best value in goods if broken into and stolen. I would not feel safe if this had to come to South Africa.

Henrietta  said:

This app would be beneficial to me since I do not own a house yet, as it will allow me to make the best choice when buying a house. Although, for those who already own houses it would expose their personal information.

Natasha  said:
on Monday 28-Oct-19 08:01 AM
I dont really like the idea of that .Its personal information , I wouldn't like it if people knew how much my house is worth. It has nothing to do with them.

Brumilde Cronje  said:
on Monday 28-Oct-19 07:25 AM
Hmmm, I hope it doesnt get used by people who want to use it to benefit themselves. I would be nice to see though, but our property rates have just increased, mine by 49%. I am shocked that i pay rate on a house that i will never be able to sell for that price
