SASRIA is a state-owned entity that provides insurance for people who obviously pay for it, against damage caused by political riots as well as terrorism, strikes and public disorder. For many years the Fund was not really paying out much money and the rates were quite low. I just received a notification that the minimum monthly premium will be increased from R5,00 to R50,00 and the annual premium, for those who pay annually, will increase from a minimum of R50,00 to R500,00. It is obviously very affordable, but it is still an increase of 10 times. The reason for that is the huge number of protests in South Africa over the last 5 years.
SASRIA says that in the 2018/2019 financial year there was 5,000 claims compared to 3,000 claims the year before that. In the first 5 months of the 2018/2019 financial year 2,000 new claims were registered for totalling an estimated value of R1 billion. This is because of the increasing number of protests in South Africa and “the severity of claims resulting from such protests.”
People obviously have a right to strike and to be heard, but again, the violence that goes with it is completely unacceptable and businesses increasingly must put in claims for damage done to them. I will not go into the effect that this has on people watching the country from outside and deciding whether to invest or not, because I think you all know exactly what impact it has on them. It is just one more increasing cost of doing business in South Africa and we need to start tackling these issues.

I dont think striking is the problem - I feel its the way people handle the strike with violence which is the problem. Strike that turn into riots are seriously damaging our country.

I am inclined to agree with Patrick as well. The people of South Africa do require a change of mind set. But, by the same token, the very same people need to be liberated from poverty. If only there wasn't squandering of the tax-payer money.

Yes people have a right to voice their opinions but to destroy the very things that you are fighting for is just not clever. I always think about the cheek that some of these people have to destroy the buildings that they work from and still expect to be employed.

This is interesting to read, if the South Africa could function as a country we would not need all these extra insurance's that we need to take out. If only everyone could understand that burning, breaking and vandalizing places is also having such a negative effect on the country our rand and most of all jobs, we should build everyone up to the same level, and not breaking everyone down to one level.

It is quite sad at the fact that it always resorts to such acts. It will be very difficult for people to have interest in opening a business here with having that to worry about. And our economic status whould get a boost to be honest.

Unfortunately this is the sad reality of our society, it has become the norm to strike and people find that in a government that does not heed to the views of many, striking that results in damage to property that only adds to the crippling economy is a means to an end.

I agree that in certain instances strikes are necessary in order for change to be brought but this does not justify the use of violence or damage to property. The people of our country are tired or empty promises given by Government but destroying property and the inclusion of people, who don't wish to participate in such strikes, by way of violence is definitely not the way to go. More damage is done in the end which results in bigger costs.

I do understand why strikes come up and the frustration behind it,but why destroy the very same thing you are fighting for? the area in which i stay has had a huge amount of shacks that came up ,more than 1000 shacks in a space of less than 6 months and they are now demanding water and electricity but burnt down the local clinic and a primary school nearby which then does more harm than good.

I have to say the SASRIA cover on my insurance policy is still not bad, in fact, at the moment it is minimal. How long that will last, only time will tell.

These unions are a money making thing, they don't look at the bigger picture, they do a lot of damage to our economy which right now can't afford more damage. I agree people have the right to fight for what they believe in and their rights
They need to start thinking before acting . The government needs to start stepping up

I agree with Patrick, I think people are creatures of habit, if they know only violence linked to striking then its most likely not going to change. To be honest its a game with strikers and the government - the government doesn't listen until strikers get violent. They are both to blame.

I think that South Africans are fed up of empty promises from their leaders and they are reacting they best way they know how which is violence. I think our Government needs to address the root causes of the strikes and not treat the symptoms of these issues that South Africans are faced with.

There are so many steps trade unions can take before resorting to strike action, when these steps such as collective bargaining and negotiation is done right they do not even have to consider striking.Also when they decide to strike it can be done right.
There are so many different strike such as a "sympathy strike" this is when strikers have no issues against their own employer but support another group of workers on strike which is totally unacceptable because it is these strikes where the "cheerleaders" usually have not problem to cause damage as they do not even work there.
