It is amazing that only few years ago we are hearing that the huge shortages that we are about to face with pilots. Many around the world are retiring and it is expensive to become a pilot, so they were struggling to recruit new young pilots. Of course, that situation will turn around later, but one of the world’s biggest airlines, and I am not going to talk about all the problems that South African Airways always have, because that is just a never-ending drama, has just notified their pilots that retrenchments are coming. Delta Airlines have encouraged 7,900 of their older pilots to accept an early retirement package, and then have notified another 2,600 pilots that depending on how many of the 7,900 accept the early retirement package, some of them may need to be laid off. It is important to understand, in a country like America, when you are laid off there is not really any payment. They just lay you off and that’s that – there is no system of one month plus one week’s notice per year that you worked, etc – another area where South African businesses struggle to compete on an international basis because of our laws. Employees might like them, but it keeps a large percentage of the country unemployed and that then has its impact on crime.

It is very sad that pandemic is affecting Airways so much and lots of qualified pilots and cabin crew members are forced to lay down or being retrenched. From SA articles looks like SA government is offering retrenchment packages to pilots, which are very good news. But what about those who will be without job and no income?

It's sad when you read about things like this. It really takes time, money and hard work to become a pilot, also you are responsible for the lives of others. Stop bailing out SAA. Or give it to people who know how to manage

It's funny to think that as you say a few years ago people must have thought being a pilot will be great because other people are always traveling. And now look....
I have a pilot friend and hope that his job is still secure. Luckily he isn't an international pilot

It no doubt takes skill and loads of practical exams to be a pilot. Early retirement is not an ideal way to want to end a career! Especially if you have invested so much of time and money in it!

Retrenchment is no joke. It really influences your life. My heart goes out to every family that has to go through this especially in South Africa with the state that our country is currently in. Hopefully soon one can pick up the pieces and start over again but even this is not easy.

I read an article about this the other day which said that talks between SAA pilots and the Department of Public Enterprises about voluntary retrenchment packages have collapsed ahead of a crucial vote this week by creditors on the business rescue plan for the troubled airline. The department, which is the sole SAA shareholder, has accused the airline’s 617 pilots of being unreasonable and greedy, saying they have proposed alternative retrenchment packages that disproportionately benefit them over 4,091 other workers. The retrenchment packages offered to SAA pilots won’t be improved, which is a sign that both parties are on a collision course about the rescue of an airline that is in the throes of business rescue.

We are essentially fighting two pandemics and a balance of interest needs to be struck between being ''safe'' at home, but not being able to pay for said home due to the economic destruction that the virus is causing.

A close friend of mine who is a Pilot for Emirates was recently retrenched and he has years of experience, it is very sad to see. A lot of people around me also speak of retrenchments, how long it will take to get back to normal (if ever) who knows?

I heard employees being retrenched, their packages will include varsity entrance fee to study in a new field. Not sure how true that is, and how old the staff are and if they'd be willing to study something else. I think employed people should be very grateful for the work they have, times will be tough for a long time.

Very sad listening to how so many people are losing their jobs during this pandemic. People who have their jobs still must just be so grateful to still have an income. The travel industry has really been hit hard during these troubling times.

All pilots at the moment are struggling. There's just not enough demand and running an airline is expensive even if you ignore the costs of maintaining employees. A friend of mine works for a local South African airline and is only earning 50% of his monthly salary despite him flying regularly. He is honestly just happy that he has a job.

It's sad to think that one of the most skilled and reputable careers have been so drastically affected. Certainly it's not the only career, sector or job force that's been affected, but there was always something about pilots that I held in quite high esteem. To think a lot are being laid off/ grounded is terrible for them.

This is a scary thought. My cousin is a pilot in Hong Kong and it is definitely true that it is very expensive to become a qualified pilot. It also takes many years to get the necessary experience required for the profession. It is sad to think of all those people who have invested so much time and money in becoming a pilot, will find themselves unemployed. Covid-19 will continue having devastating effects on all sectors of the economy.

Covid-19 is having a detrimental effect on so many companies and jobs around the world. I never thought that the world would face such a drastic change in such a short time. The economy needs to open and needs to pick up as soon as possible. We need to open travel not just for the pilots but for people to start traveling and the economy to recover. I've read that Emirates had requested their pilots and cabin crew to take unpaid leave. Can you imagine a huge airline like Emirates which has probably 100 000 staff all due to COVID. They are now laying off and retrenching a lot of their staff. I feel sorry for those who invested to become pilots and now can't work, are being retrenched or have to wait until pilots are needed again.

With Covid-19, the economy is not doing well. It is so scary and there will still be a lot of people that will be retrenched due to this pandemic. You are right, training to be a pilot is not a cheap venture and to lose those who have already gotten their licenses is going to be very scary in time to come. When everything settles down and life gets back to as normal a pace as before Covid, we are going to be in trouble not only in the flight industry but in many an industry with people who were "lost" in the form of retrenchment, etc during this pandemic.

and in other news an online store i use quite a lot currently has a staff shortage - they are employing, and they have run out of stock of some products i am after.
lockdown has been a killer for some, and a saviour for others.
i will certainly be doing a lot more online shopping, and far less going to the mall.
