Vegan shoes

I am really impressed by the number of companies around the world that are starting to do environmentally friendly things.  A number of companies are making vegan shoes where, for example, the laces will be made from organic cotton, the upper knit of the shoe is made from recycled plastic bottles and the inner soles are made from recycled algae foam and natural cork.  I bought myself a pair of these shoes recently and although they are not my favourite shoes in terms of look, they were completely comfortable to wear and I am happy knowing that my shoes are made out of plastic rubbish taken from the ocean where it was floating around and turned into shoes!

It is true that many companies are turning towards environment friendly products. Hopefully this will one day make a difference to the condition of our planet. It would be great if more and more companies would fall in with this.

What a great way to recycle! Not that I would wear shoes that look like that...
It's great to see how the world is moving to the more environmentally friendly vibe.

Any change for the better should make a difference. More people should try and recycle. I wish SA would make law making it mandatory

Very interesting blog about the vegan shoes.
I would never thought that there is any possibility to make from recycled plastic bottles and recycled algae foam the shoes.
Many companies overseas can prove that shoes can be vegan, environmentally-friendly, ethically made and look stylish all at once.

I have never understood why environmentally friendly things - electronic cars and vegan shoes - have a tendency to look ugly. That being said, things such as vegan shoes do have the potential to become quite fashionable - an easy way to do something, without too much inconvenience to yourself, to protect the environment.

It is Amazing to see how a normal plastic bag and a few other recycled items can be recreated, I seen previously in south Africa we have Some guy from Alexandra who also uses old plastic bags, coldrink bottles etc and turns it into amazing Art pieces.

Quite interesting, I don’t think it will be as fashionable as many people would like, but I guess at the end of the day it is really about saving the environment and making people aware of all the creative things that can be done.

Very creative, we should all do our part. I saw they are constructing a road made of recycled plastic in the Eastern Cape.

This is an impressive new piece of work. They are probably not as "grand" as a lot of shoe brands out there but they sure do look comfortable and an advantage of being environmentally friendly.

It is very nice to know that people are looking after our earth this makes me happy knowing that our animals and plants have a better chance of survival. I would buy a pair as they look like our daily shoes that we wear.

I'll be very honest, if you put these shoes on a shelf in the shops by other shoes and not call them vegan I won't even know the difference. What I also notice that for recycled shoes they are quite pricey. they should really try make it more attractive money wise as well.

Nicolle  said:

That's really awesome- I don't think vegan shoes should be the name for them though a more suitable name would be upcycled shoes. There is something about calling a shoe vegan that just doesn't sound right to me.

An interesting statistic that I read when looking up these vegan shoes was that more than 23 billion pairs of sneakers are made every year, over 300 million pairs are thrown out annually, and, on average, it takes 30-40 years for a pair to fully decompose in a landfill which just shows how bad this can be for the environment. I am very glad to hear that there are in fact shoe brands that are trying to set a new standard by making sneakers with innovative, eco-friendly materials and more sustainable alternatives for the shoes we currently have.

Mathilda  said:

I have actually seen these "vegan shoes" online, they are also quite expensive and not very fashionable.
But it’s a start and will probably become the new trend and force other companies to also make more environmentally friendly changes to their products.

It's great to hear that these shoes are made from recycled plastic and all recycled goods are used, but are these shoes biodegradable? What happens if these shoes are outgrown and disposed of incorrectly, flung into the sea or laying around it the streets? Its a great start but the amount of shoes that lay around in streets here in S.A is very strange. I think biodegradable should be the next focus.

I really love that people are looking out to save animal life and earth. Not many people are actually aware of the severity of destruction in the ocean due to all the waste that is put into it. I watched many documentaries that have brought me to tears of what the human race is doing to nature. I would support recyclable idea's where I can.

I won't lie and say that I would be buying a pair, they are really not attractive. I can think of other ways to do my bit to be more environmental friendly. Every little bit helps but at the cost of wearing ugly shoes? me? That's a hard no from me.

Alexis  said:
