I wrote a blog article early last year about the statistics we would see about Covid. In that article I said that we will discover one day that the deaths from Covid were far higher than whatever we would be told and that the statistics in South Africa would be hopelessly out. I said the only way we would know how many people actually died from Covid would be to compare it to the normal deaths in a year and see how many extra deaths there are.
That blog of mine has now been confirmed. The government has reported that just during a December period the excess deaths, not attributed to Covid, but higher than normal, were 130% higher than the normal deaths during that period.
That means, with there currently being allegedly 35,000 deaths from Covid in SA that figure is hopelessly wrong. Is it double that number, is it treble that number – we will not know until all those excess deaths last year and still to come this year are calculated by experts in future.

Stats in countries like ours will always proof difficult to be accurate. Lets not we forget that the more in accurate the numbers of the people who died from the pandemic the more the government will look to be in control.

In a world pandemic it may be difficult to provide accurate statistics. Your suggestion seems like the best approach.

I do think that the statistics are being overexaggerated, maybe not. I do not know. However, I do think that we do still have the wrong statistics

It is not a shock at all that the stats are wrong or inflated or deflated, the government here are see every opportunity to line their pockets. Its sad, people are dying. Get the facts right at least

The stats will never be accurate. This is South Africa unfortunately, Corruption at its best. The best we can possibly do is be as safe as possible and try to avoid picking up the virus until a trusted vaccine can be brought to the table.

We all knew that this was going to be the case. I'm sure a lot of people did not get tested and would have been positive. Just as I believe that many of the stats regarding the deaths are incorrect.

Stats are of course going to be inaccurate. I know a few people who has been quite sick but hadn't gotten tested out of fear of not being able to go to work. It is selfish but people have had a hard knock on their salaries, retrenchments etc so I don't blame them.

It is truly sad about all the lives lost during this period from which COVID started spreading until now. But as you say, we will not truly know how many deaths there have actually been unless it is correctly calculated.

The figures of Covid infected are wrong, most of the tests results are wrong, death figures are wrong too. What South Africa can do right?
We can only guess the figures and try to stay away from the trouble, following the basic rules.

They would never be able to calculate an accurate figure in South Africa. There numbers will always be out. You hear of people dying in a car accident marked as Covid on the Death certificate or any reasons people die nowadays are being announced as Covid being the cause of death. People are questioning this as the relatives know better. The numbers are bad agreed, however we will never truly know how bad.

I agree I also think the stats are not correct. First I don't think they tested half, because the labs are over work. There is so many people that don't get tested, so many false positives and negatives.

The stats are far from accurate. Many people who are infected with Covid-19 do not get tested and many people do not even know they are infected. Many deaths are also recorded as Covid-19 deaths when in actual fact the persons likely would have died anyway from other illnesses such as terminally ill cancer patients. We definitely cannot rely on the statistics.

The stats are certainly not right and anyway some people could be infected and are self treating themselves. We will never have accurate stats unfortunately and we will just have to keep doing what we need to do daily.

I have never believed the stats. and especially not after my sister and close friend experienced a false test on the same day. Just to test the next day again and be negative. how is that even possible, how many others had the same experience? And these tests aren't expensive especially when you doing for the whole family. The death stats as well, I've heard so many negative stories that I wont believe the figures at all.

There is very little to be trusted when it comes to Covid-19 states, especially in South Africa where our records are wrong at the best of times. I just hope that Covid becomes a thing of the past in the next few months.

I would like to know how they keep track, I don't trust that these stats will ever be accurate, not only because people aren't getting tested, or false negatives, but the lack of care amongst the government to give honest stats. The government gets paid for Covid deaths so why would they need to be honest when all they want is money?

I don't think our numbers will ever be 100% correct. I know a lot of people that tested positive, did a test the next day at a different place and then tested negative.

It's quite crazy how there is still so much we don't know surrounding Covid. The stats will probably never be accurate if you even just consider one factor that not everyone gets tested even if they have symptoms because the price of tests makes it so inaccessible.

This does not come as a shock because some tests are not even accurate. They would definitely not have their statistics correct but maybe after the pandemic.

This must be a very difficult time to report accurately on these stats, many people aren't getting tested and there are probably huge backlogs with regard to figures and reporting back to the necessary organizations in charge of this. I don’t know if we will ever get the correct stats!

What is the annual death toll for 2020? How does that compare to 2019 and 2018? I believe it was far less than previous years. Yes Covid "killed more people than Road Accidents and Murders" but that was because we were all locked away in our homes. So that part for me is obvious. Because of the decrease in other deaths, I think it kind of levels the annual death toll which is a grim way to look at it, but it's the truth.
How I see it, you can't compare the Covid deaths to the other deaths. Compare annual stats... *Under correction* the stats seem to have decreased/ stayed fairly the same since 2008.

The stats will never be accurate! I know a few people that actually died of cancer etc. and their death certificate says Covid-19. This is quite scary, but yet again we live in South Africa. There are also a lot of people that probably had Covid and never went to be tested so we will never ever know the actual stats.

The Covid stats are very wrong and very stressful. I am so scared for my friends and family this is really not a joke and people do need to precautionary measure to keep them safe from this virus. My Husband works for a company the fixes Fridges and he happen to be fixing fridges for the Morgue and he said that the fridges are very full and most of them is people that passed away from Covid.

I can agree the stats have been wrong and the stats will be wrong for time to come. Everyone needs to take precautionary measures to make sure you don't get it. It's a horrible disease to get and still today I am suffering with side affects of having covid.

This is frightening, but what is even more so, is the new strain going around. The best we can do is to social distance, wear our masks, wash hands, sanitize and refrain from spending unnecessary time in public.

I think that the stats will only be true once this is over and done with. One has to take everything into consideration and it is a little difficult with so many people contracting Covid, people recovering and dying. Then it is whether or not people actually go and get tested on top of that....

I think the number of people testing positive and dying is completely incorrect. I just think about when I was so sick basically coughing up a lung and I tested negative 4 times despite losing my smell and having all the COVID symptoms. When I had already recovered (some 6 weeks later) and had to have a routine test to be admitted to hospital (for unrelated COVID purposes) I only then tested positive. I also think many people do not go and get tested if they have a mild case of COVID for fear of having to isolate and not be paid for that period so because times are so desperate people are just treating it like a common cold.

We all knew that the stats would be off from the beginning, it is no surprise that the South African government got it wrong. They have not been able to lead efficiently or without corruption for the longest time - how could we expect them to all of a sudden get it right just because there is a pandemic.
