Google buys Fitbit

Most people know the news that Google has bought Fitbit.  It is clearly their way of taking on Apple, in particular, taking on the Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch is superb in terms of being able to make phone calls to people, monitoring your heart and ECG rate, etc, but it is not as great when it comes to automatically tracking steps and your sleep patterns, not to mention the fact that you need to charge it a lot more than you would have to charge a Fitbit.  I am not sure what Google will be able to do, but I do think that we will see Fitbit come out with some dramatically different products in about a year’s time.  It will obviously take time to implement and get whatever it is they plan running, but it will be exciting to see some competition for the Apple Watch because as we always learn in life, competition inspires companies to make better products and to improve existing products, so at the end of the day we all win from competition and we don’t win when two companies largely have the market to themselves.  In that respect, I am talking about Vodacom and MTN with Cell C running a very distant third.

It's nice to have a wide range of products to choose from. I mean you have great watches coming our from Garmin, Apple, Huawei etc. It will be interesting to see what google can do to make Fitbit stand out.

This is interesting news! something to look out for. Apple definitely needs more competition. It would also make products similar to the Apple watch more accessible.

I'd love to see the new features Google would bring to Fitbit - I've never use a Fitbit but I've heard good things.

I have had an Apple watch and a Fitbit watch but now I am a die-hard Garmin fan, it surpassed all expectations.

Am sure is a case of wait and see. Lets hope that they will come up with a better product than the highly rated Apple watch.

Most indubitably! Healthy competition keeps competitors on their toes and it inspires productive, drive and success.

Wow I did not know that google bought Fitbit.

I have been using the Huawei watch GT and it has all the same features as most Fitness watches.

I have never used a Fitbit and I'm not sure I will

I like the watch. I think it looks nice but is too expensive and technology is becoming unaffordable for many people that would want it but cannot have it.

The watch looks nice, there is everything in one, however, I will not spend that amount of money (X amount) on it, as I would rather invest that money, or use it on something else that I do need.

Google it seems is going to take over the world. I enjoy my Fitbit and tracking my steps for the day and seeing if I acquired any active time.

I think these watches are very overpriced. Even though their features are really cool. There are smaller, less fancy watches that cost a fraction of what these watches cost and they do the same thing!
For the more advanced sportsmen, I suppose it is a good investment... It will definitely be interesting to see the competition heat up though.

I've wanted to get an Apple watch ever since I got an Apple phone, but I think a Fitbit wouldn't be a bad alternative. Would be interesting indeed to see how the competition will heat up now. Both are pretty expensive either way

I have bought so many of theses smart watches, i get lazy to charge them, you already have to charge so many things, cant they make them use kinetic energy or solar... Google really went from Zero to hero as one might say lol I wonder who still remembers AOL search engine

I have been wanting to get a fit bit for myself for a while now. And I think its definitely time to get one. I am also a huge apple fan I cannot see myself going back to an android phone ever again!

I'm sure google will make dramatic changes and upgrades to the fitbit. I have an apple watch and I love it although I do think google will make really good changes to the fitbit which will make people buy it but Apple is a big competitor for the fitbit. Lets see what the future holds for google and fitbit.

It sound really interesting and i would love to try it out mainly because i tend to lose my phone a lot at home and at least with the watch i would still be able to see messages.

You are very right in saying "competition inspires companies to make better products" and I believe that is in almost everything in life. Without competition you'll have the same thing for a very long time. I am kind of excited to see what the Fitbit features would be after a year and then what the Apple Watch would do better

Sune  said:

I would say it is very good investment for Google to buy Fitbit, interesting how this watch will operate and how it will help us from day to day life?
Would be very frustrating to charge it all the time though...

I have recently purchased a phone that came with a watch and I must be honest, the only thing I like about it is it notifies me of messages if my phone is not on me. Other than that, I don't really make use of all the things on it. I have been wearing in since my upgrade in December so it is now month 2. Let us see how long it lasts because I too don't really wear watches.

Marchinique  said:

I always wanted a Fitbit, but in my opinion - it is way too expensive and overrated.
You can get another watch that does the same thing, for much cheaper.
For some people it's only about the 'name' and 'brand'.
The Fitbit is in fact another step into technology, expanding and opening new doors to the world.

Clare  said:

I want a Fitbit, it would really be something i would get when i can. But i must admit that i too am not up to date with all these technology things. I most only deal with my cell.

I had no idea that Google bought Fitbit. To be honest the image of the fitbit looks like the apple watch. I used a Fitbit many years ago and was not a fan but honestly it essentially all does the same thing. As long as it can track my steps and get my Vitality points then it is all the same.

Zindy Kruger  said:

Competition is always good so good luck Google, I agree with David i cannot remember the last time i had a need to wear a watch myself. Its also risky with the amount of crime in our country. Would rather have a concealed phone in my pocket to check time and make calls instead of flashing around watches that everyone can see just to be another statistic in this country.

I read an article by Rick Osterloh from 14 January 2021 saying: "For more than a decade, Fitbit has helped people around the world live healthier, more active lives. A clear pioneer in the industry, Fitbit built a vibrant community of more than 29 million active users by creating amazing wearable devices and immersive wellness experiences. Today, I’m excited to announce that Google has completed its acquisition of Fitbit and I want to personally welcome this talented team to Google."
