Amazon grows

Last year, during Covid-19, Amazon hired more than any other company around the world – 500,000 workers.  According to his annual shareholder letter, Jeff Bezos, said that there are now 200 million members of Amazon Prime around the world.  That is up 50 million just over one year and Amazon Prime costs $119 a year.

Amazon says that approximately 60% of its sales are via small and mid-size businesses that sell products on Amazon and those companies earn between $25 and $39 billion selling products off Amazon last year.

Bezos explained that Amazon has grown because it saves people time – customers complete 28% of purchases on Amazon in 3 minutes or less and they estimate that the typical trip to a store to go there physically takes about an hour and so Amazon estimates that it saves people about 75 hours a year of travelling back and forth to stores.  Obviously, this is relevant to any online shopping that you do – regardless of whether its Amazon or another site.

I read somewhere that they are building an Amazon just outside of Cape Town. It would be nice to be able to have a walk in store

I am not very big on online shopping, I do buy groceries online from Checkers, but for other things, I generally like going to the store seeing the items, feeling the quality, etc. I still go into book shops to purchase books because, call me old fashioned, I like to hold the book in my hands and turn the pages, not much into electronic books.

Amazon is definitely one the biggest and richest companies in the world! Andy Jassy being the new designated CEO was definitely a power move for the company made for its longevity.

I must admit I have not gotten into the online shopping thing yet, I am still scarred of scams and the products arriving and it's not what you expected. I am still part of the old school people who prefer to go to the shops.

While Amazon is very efficient, the working conditions of the employees that make it so efficient are underwhelming. Business Insider detailed that during peak times of the year, workers are required to work mandatory overtime which translates to six 10-hour day shifts or five 12-hour night shifts, for a total of 60 hours per week. Amazon has a right to fire any employees that refuse to work overtime. CNBC reported that in 2020, for every 100 Amazon warehouse workers there were 5.9 serious injuries, which is nearly 80% higher than the serious injury rate at non-Amazon warehouses.

I am not one of the many people utilizing Amazon. I just hear about it and how well they do. Even when Covid hit, I didn't buy anything online.

Amazon is an awesome purchasing platform. Many, or can I say, most people are satisfied with ordering off of Amazon and will continue doing so. It is convenient, and also, a trusted website.

Since Covid a lot of people are doing online shopping seem like this is the way to go. I personally don't do online shopping but need to give it a go seeing how convenient it is.

It's amazing how Amazon has used the online shopping market to create employment even during the Covid pandemic which has been strenuous, financially, on many households and businesses. With this being said, online shopping definitely makes lives much easier but I still find the need to go into shops for certain things.

Online shopping has definitely become a necessity in a lot of households since Covid hit - I personally much prefer shopping online than going into the actual shops.

Online is faster but when it comes to clothes and things I'm still old fashioned and like to go into a store to see what I'm getting as in the past when ordering online and its not the correct size or there is something wrong then its a wait again to return and wait some more to get a new one.

I have never bought anything off of Amazon and don't particularly enjoy online shopping because I tend to walk around and enjoy browsing. The time it saves on average does sound extremely nice though.

I think, this is very interesting stats.
Shows again how well know online shopping can grow in to different type of business - like Amazon Prime Video.
Lots of people all over the world will consider rather to pay $5.99 for a month which is more less R90.00 is South Africa then lets say R900 for DSTV.

Wow isn't that amazing! all that time saved not having to travel out to get what you need, doing everything from the comfort of your own home. Although I do think any exercise is good exercise, so I enjoy the walkabouts in the mall, but if I can't get it in store I would try online.

Kayla  said:

Online shopping is definitely a lot easier and more convenient. However, I am a bit suspicious that should it be an overseas online store, that you take the risk which is quite high, that you will not receive your parcel in South Africa. As they tend to steal or lose you parcel at the Hubs in South Africa.

Jessica  said:

Yes I read about this beginning of the year. So people should do more online shopping in such a terrible time, people are losing their jobs all the time. Maybe this would help more employment.

Sune  said:

I think online shopping is definitely more convenient, especially during the times we are in right now. People are scared to go to shopping centres as the risk of contracting the virus remains much higher.

200 000 000 x $119 = $23 800 000 000
