Real Covid death toll

Research by the South African Medical Research Council, together with UCT’s actuarial unit, shows that there have been a lot more deaths in South Africa than normal this year and far exceeding the Covid death toll that we all hear about daily.  The official figures are that 75,000 people have now died from Covid, but the research points out that there have been 222,500 “excess deaths” since 3 May 2020 mot included in the Covid figures.  Now, it is not guaranteed that all of those deaths are because of Covid, but there have been a lot more deaths in the last year than normal and it is a reasonable assumption that it is precisely Covid that is largely behind that dramatic increase in deaths.

I have written more than a few times about the fact that it is likely to be the case that we will only know accurate numbers years later.  This just shows you how incorrect the official Covid death pstatistics are now and how serious the impact from Covid actually is.

I don't think we will ever really know the true figures of Covid-19 deaths in South Africa.

I Agree, the Stats everywhere really can't be accurate, there is way to many speculations about these numbers.

Most cases are probably not reported so statistics are not bound to be accurate. It is true what Megan has stated, we only hear these days about Covid-19 deaths, but not of other illness related deaths. Its going to be a while before things go back to normal.

The stats can't always be 100% accurate. I truly hope that the vaccine roll-out can start reducing the those numbers however so that we can at least go back to at least some sort of normality.

I don't believe these stats are accurate in our country. Covid is real and is killing people but i also think that when you die of other illness they also count it as Covid.

I am quite skeptical about statistics especially in SA. How are these stats compiled? it can never be 100%.

Sinead  said:

I don't believe these stats are even remotely accurate. I'm no statistician, but where are the stats of the other causes of death? How can everything be labelled as Covid? Yes, this virus is attacking people and killing them but the ones I've heard of or come across are not as severe as mainstream media show. There is still a lot of uncertainty around this virus and we can't just believe everything mainstream media shows us. Dig deeper!

I don't think anyone should be relying on the stats provided, we stopped hearing about flu deaths and accidents because everything is now about covid. Everything the government is involved in is sketchy, I struggle trusting anything they say to be honest.

I do not believe that the stats are accurate in this country, but what if seen with my 2 eyes what people going through, covid is real and people are dying form this virus, I do not even want my worst enemies to go through this.

I do agree here, I do not believe that the stats are accurate in this country. And I even doubt we will ever have an accurate figure. I believe there must be a lot more that was reported but I also believe a lot of people died of un-related Covid but was put under the Covid related stats. But Covid is real and does kill

I don't think we will really know the true figures of Covid-19 deaths. I also don't think that everything will go back to normal anytime soon again.

I have never believed that the statics could be the truth but mainly because how do we know how the data is compiled. I don't think there is a reliable source of data. One thing for sure is that this virus kills people!

Danielle  said:

The true actual figures of Covid deaths will never be known. So sad to know that our people have to die this way. I just pray that everything will be back to normal and people don’t have to suffer with Covid.

Hopefully a few years after the pandemic we will have the correct statistics. Since there has been a lot of reports about people who have died being labelled as covid related although they are not.

Bianca Niemann  said:

I think it most definitely is due to Covid, and of course we won't know the actual figure but the fact that there is a sort of "dark figure" of Covid deaths is unsettling.

It is so scary to see people dying and worse our government keeps saying it is because of Covid and in most cases people die from natural courses or just car accidents but we are told that the person was died from covid. Am not surprised that the states is wrong because our own people want us to be afraid of covid so badly that when a person dies it has to be because of covid and in most cases it is not.

Ashleigh De Villiers  said:

I knew the stats were not going to be the true stats from the start. Unfortunately South Africa doesn't have proper systems in place to keep the records right really and I cannot help but also say that its not like there is much care about it as well.

Roxanne  said:

I have heard of people dying of natural causes or suicides and their death certificate states that it was Covid, I don't think we will truly know the true stats, lets face it we live in South Africa, a country who cant even keep track of our finances

Helen  said:
on Wednesday 18-Aug-21 01:05 PM
This is very true, that we do not know what is the actual death toll in South Africa Covid related. Any death today recorded as Covid death like people does not have any other medical conditions and causes.
Today we blame Covid for everything!

Chante  said:

I read that: "COVID-19 deaths are a key indicator to track the evolution of the pandemic. However, many countries still lack functioning civil registration and vital statistics systems with the capacity to provide accurate, complete and timely data on births, deaths and causes of death. A recent assessment of health information systems capacity in 133 countries found that the percentage of registered deaths ranged from 98% in the European region to only 10% in the African region."

Lucretia  said:

I don't believe all the deaths they are reporting are actually Covid related. I, also, wonder how many cover-ups are going to be blamed on Covid? Maybe I am just cynical but I do believe that the more numbers that are reported the more power the governments have over the people. I know Covid exists, I had it, I am just saying the governments are using Covid to control peoples lives. Read the piece from the Biderman Report of 1956 "Communist Coercive Methods for Eliciting Individial Compliance" and compare it the Covid 19........makes one think.

I agree the daily death toll is incorrect and there is a lot more deaths every day. I know of a few families who have lost loved ones to this virus and I don't think it is the end of people dying from this virus... this is only the beginning.

Clare   said:

This just shows you that tomorrow is really not promised, I feel that the world has taken a heavy knock on this Covid and the the family that has lost so many people. I know people personally that has lost her Mom, dad and her grandmother in matters of weeks apart because of covid. I really wish that this could be a story of the past and that things can get back to normal.

Chante Botha  said:
on Wednesday 18-Aug-21 08:33 AM
Hopefully when the accurate statistics come out, people who lost loved ones can find some closure in this time in our country, especially knowing they didn't die due to this virus but an actual medical condition or accidents etc.

Jessica  said:
on Wednesday 18-Aug-21 08:30 AM
Well I can imagine that the correct stats are possibly even higher than those to be honest. We don't really keep good track of these important things.

Alexis  said:
on Wednesday 18-Aug-21 08:18 AM
The statistics cannot be accurate at this point in time and yes, will only come to light much later down the line

Zindy Kruger  said:

Scary part is i have heard people who have died in a car accident being listed as Covid being cause of death. So not sure how accurate the stats will really be.

Zonaika Nuade  said:

Just feels like you didn't hear about deaths in the 1st wave and now with 3rd wave there are more deaths each day.

david  said:

i must be honest, covid has been a complete and utter let down for me. not a single one of the people i want to die has died yet. all just arbitrary other people, what a pity.
