Quackery and rationality

One of the problems of the more informed times we live in, where we can Google anything, has been the growth of “alternative facts”.  People these days never seem to agree on anything.  Indeed, before the vaccines for Covid 19 were even invented there were already all sorts of fake news stories about how they wouldn’t work.  They were being discredited before they were even invented!

Some countries, for their own purposes, have whole organizations devoted to the spread of false information in Western society – to provoke chaos and division amongst people.  Think Russia for one. So not only do you have more fake news than ever, but some bad actors actively promoting fake news while creating disputes about real news so that experts cease to be “experts” and every person, no matter their qualifications, is entitled, in the name of freedom of speech to have “their own opinion”.  Of course, as the saying goes you are entitled to your opinion – but not to your own facts!

Fake news. Medical quackery. Conspiracy theories.  All the crazy stuff that once was marginalized is now driven to the centre and some perfectly intelligent people unfortunately  fall for it – perhaps by following a reading the wrong people and websites.

Steven Pinker’s new book “Rationality” deals with this subject and how we as a species can be so clever that we manage to come up with a cure so quickly to a major new virus – yet have people shoot it down with crazy, irrational theories.  He argues that because of all the information we are surrounded by, we fail to take advantage of skills we have developed for centuries – logic, critical thinking and the probability of different things.

What’s really sad to read is the stories of families coming out now in the American media of people dying in ICU and begging Doctors to give them the vaccine and being told it is too late.  Of loved ones who have lost relatives because they were “anti-vaxxers”.  There are real consequences for those who fall for the quackery.

Fake news is one of the biggest reasons why so many people are refusing to get the vaccine. Do your own research, ask a Medical Professional and don't believe everything you read on the internet.

As they say, there are many advisors but is up to each individual to choose the right advise. one has to always weigh the advantages against the disadvantages. The President of Brazil is now facing a legal battle for failing to act quickly when the Covid crisis hit his country and probably for thinking aga this thing will go away yet if almost wipped the entire brazil.

Let's not forget about the 5G/covid conspiracies.. lol! We cannot cite Facebook and social media as a primary source of information. It is important to do proper research.

It is important to do your research if you are unsure, stay clear of the fake news and focus on medical journals.

My son is 18 months old and when we walk into a shop the first thing he does is put out his hands to sanitize, he only knows people by wearing their masks etc. I got the vaccine for my kids sake, and I wish we could just get over all of the fake news surrounding the vaccine so that we can go back to normality! NO MORE MASKS!

As in all things in life, its better to ask the professionals. You would not ask your cashier advise on how to do a brain surgery. Its a touchy subject but fake news actually does more harm than keeping quiet.

I was first against the vaccine for covid but then my granfather got very ill with kidney failure, I realize then if I bought covid home and gave it to him, he would die. I could also not visit him at all. So it is my social responsilbity to protect my loves one and people around me.

All companies are going to make these "vaccinations" mandatory in the near future. There's actually no escaping it whether you are for or against it.
One of the benefits though, include traveling overseas which is definitely something I want to do.
There's a lot of uncertainty with regards to this vaccine but it is what it is...

I am definitely pro the Covid vaccine although I have come across a few people who have suffered from side effects after taking the vaccine. I really believe that these vaccines will definitely have a different effect on each individual. It is new and there will definitely be many theories on it. Ultimately, it comes down to what you read and how you interpret the information. A lot of people are scared purely because of the theories surrounding the vaccine as well as how new the vaccine is.

I was definitely an "anti-vaxxer" as some people would call it. I think I really lived into the wrong stories or the fake news that some people were spreading on this topic. Funny how the devil works and whispers things in your ears. But I was recently reminded that no matter what I get jabbed with I have someone bigger in my life protecting me and looking out for me!!
So, if it's my time - then so be it. If not, then well I will have the pleasure to visit my family again in New Zealand one day. Can't wait!!

Indifferent is the word for me regarding the vaccine. There is definitely a divide between vaccinated and non-vaccinated, "freedom of choice" comes in as well, before it becomes mandatory by the government. The world is going to great lengths to advise individuals to vaccinate to reach herd immunity and people find it strange to call it "herd" resulting in them feeling like sheepeople, amazing what we come up with. People taking the vaccine to protect the people around them, great, but people turning against each other because they haven't vaccinated yet or are waiting until such time they feel its safe for them, isn't fair.

Prishani  said:

I think Covid-19 has had a huge impact on so many people. I know it is very hard but I think we need to try our best to be positive and optimistic when it comes to the vaccine. I know there are a huge number of unknowns and uncertainties, but at least we are making progress in some way.

We are all shocked about how quickly they managed to get the vaccine for covid when we have cancer, HIV and more of which they haven't found a vaccine for and yet covid is a yesterday thing but it already has a vaccine. I was afraid at getting the vaccine since I have seen many people dying from it but then my sister who is a nurse got the vaccine, then followed my father now me.

Casandra  said:

Getting the vaccine has brought a feeling of safety or at least a fighting chance while we are at war with Covid-19. I know that everyone has the right to their own opinion as to why they should or shouldn't get the vaccine but I personally feel that it is selfish if you don't, because if you don't, not only do you put yourself at risk but also your family members, partners, friends, work colleagues or anyone you surround yourself with. A lot of people haven't survived from getting the virus. Rather be safe than sorry.

I took the vaccine to protect my family, especially for my mom, who is fighting cancer and I wouldn't be able to live with myself if she had to die from Covid that I brought home and for us to soon go back to normal living, meaning no masks, everything being open and no restriction's

Melissa  said:

I must be honest, I was anti the "jab" before I got so sick with Covid. I never want that again, I will not lie, I was very scared and when you battling to breath, it is very scary. I am off today to get the Jab. I agree with David, for once.

Henrietta  said:

I took my jab for my family. Everyone in our immediate family including grandparents of 83 & 93 had the injection. I can't care even a small amount for those who don't go for the jab, its their choice and their lives. Just like I feel like I'm taking it to protect myself and my family they might not take it for their own reasons. I do however feel that the vaccination will be mandatory eventually everywhere but in your own house. Most countries already have the travel rule look how strict they are with restaurants in the UK so even if its not "forced" it will eventually feel like that everywhere you go they might ask for "proof of vaccination".

I must agree with Jessica and Clare on this subject. We have no idea as to the long term affects and why can one not choose to take it or not without being looked down upon. It is all happening so fast and feels forced, which makes me very uneasy to say the least and when one researches instead of going in blindly to something made....it is understandable to be nervous and unsure especially having a few allergic reactions already and one being Colgate toothpaste. Everybody is different and reacts differently.

I am not an "anti-vaxxer" nor am I a "pro-vaxxer" I am some were in the middle. We are in this together we have all got our own review and we are initialed to our choice. If people do not want to do this then they should be left alone and others who do want to do it should not worry because the vaccine is meant to protect you from the virus. Do people have such faith in the vaccine ?? I would wonder if you really believe in it then why stress about the anit-vaxxers??

Jessica  said:
on Wednesday 08-Sep-21 08:41 AM
What are the real long terms effects of these vaccines is the real question. I mean all the vaccines we have now took decades to make. Another thing is they so good at making these "quick" vaccines but still haven't found a cure for Cancer??? Cancer has been around way longer and has killed MILLIONS of people and still to this day we have small quick fixes with huge possibilities of them returning and no vaccine to try prevent it. Anyways not many people can be trusted in this day and age for my liking. I mean there is many good doctors and specialists that come short, everyone makes mistakes so these things are a worry.

Lauren  said:

I simply cannot understand why people would not take extra measures to protect themselves and their families. I think there is more evidence in support of getting vaccinated than evidence against it.

i never get sick, ever. if i think about it really hard, i think i had a headache once as a teenager, but that would have been because my mother was nagging me. unfortunately my wife and daughter are not as healthy as me, and live with serious co-morbidities. i have had my COVID jab for them. if the jab does nothing, it's cost me nothing either. if the jab saves my family, then i've done some good. and if the jab kills me (admittedly more chance of me being struck by lightning) then i died trying to protect my family - what an honourable way to go! in my mind there is no down side to the vaccine. to hell with your TV license, do the right thing and get your jab.
