First impressions

I attended the game between the Netherlands and Denmark at Soccer City on Tuesday. I was really impressed by the stadium and the fantastic, clean and great condition it is in. I loved my seat – only 7 rows back from the field and was surrounded largely by foreigners.

Yes, there was a constant noise of vuvuzelas and while I don’t have a problem with them, it would probably be nicer if there is a little bit more applause, cheering and other noises, which would also add to the variety every now and then. Probably the least impressive performance was that of Denmark, who on the basis of that performance, assuming that their game tactic was not to simply play for a goal, will be on their way back home quite shortly.

They really appeared to make no effort to go on the attack and never ever looked like they would score a goal. So far, when it comes to teams, I have been most impressed by Germany – but obviously a few big guns still to play.

Vuvuzelas are a form of torture and drown out the natural rhythm and response of football crowds. Yep, Germany are the form side of the tournament, but let's now see them against a real team. Soccer City is magnificent, but they missed a trick by failing to add restaurants/bars/etc, to ensure a great pre- and post-match vibe

Could you guys explain to me how a vuvuzela drowns out the atmosphere? Or spoils the adrenaline rush?

I went to the opening game on Friday and the vuvuzelas were great! I did not find them irritating or too loud and they added to a fantastic vibe! I only had a small one because there really is some type of trick to blowing those big ones and I could not get it! I think it is fun!!!!!!! As long as respectfully used ie no blowing during anthems and do not blow right into someone's ear!

I agree with Jeandre... Not only spoil it the atmosphere but it also has the most annoying sound ever.

i must say i agree with michael's sentiments on this one,yes i have nothing against them either, but i do think they are a bit overpowering in some ways,as it drowns out the excitment etc. but i wouldnt say ban them completley

Same with me – I wasn’t big on the vuvu’s until Friday morning the 11th of June when all our beautiful and oh-so-colourful staff members were in the spirit of the event, blowing their Vuvu’s.

That’s when “I felt it, it is here!” – the gees hit and then it was downhill from there, got a vuvu, got those huge colourful South African hats and a Bafana-Bafana shirt.

I think the vuvuzela is going to rule the world - they are going to be used everywhere. It was initiated by us and introduced to thousands - over 200 000 was sold before a specific game! What does that tell you? How many complaints? 22!!!!

The atmosphere in general is electrifying, contageous, powerful and everywhere! For someone that had no interest in football whatsoever, I am sold. Even think soccer might be the one thing that could unite and bring a very negative nation to finally stand together.

Haven't had the opportunity to watch many games yet - but boy oh boy did I let my hair down on Friday! Can't wait for the next few matches.

I think that people that can't appreciate the sound of a vuvuzela during this time, should start appreciating what this means for our country. I think that, as Brenda said, it unites South Africans and will always bring memories to some of us. For me it will always bring memories of us standing outside and get everyone in traffic excited for the world cup. People know exactly what it means when one blows on a vuvuzela - FEEL IT, IT IS HERE :-) This will never happen in our lifetime again, it doesn't harm anyone to have some fun with it.

My family also attended the Netherlands and Denmark match and they actually said that the vuvuzelas weren't very noisy compared to other Bafana matches. I think vuvuzelas create a great atmosphere-and it's unique to South Africa. How many people from other countries can say that they actually enjoy being stuck in traffic because they're too busy blowing vuvus in the traffic?

No, they must not be banned. This is our mark. They say foreigners are slipping these vuvuzelas into their bags to take home. Mark my words you are going to hear them been blown in over seas stadiums.

There will always be complainers, I will drown them out with my vuvzela!

I think Vuvuzelas are awesome. Before Friday the 11th where we displayed our enthusiasm for the SWC on Jan Smuts, the thought of a vuvuzela got my blood boiling and annoyed me. After seeing all the faces having such a ball on the side of the road, I had goosebumps and actually made me feel proud and part of it all. I went right out and bought a Vuvuzela and have been blowing it ever since. After all, it is only for a month and they have really neat earplugs to use at the games.

I say: If it's too loud, you're too old.
Get some spirit. This is a truely South African Tournament and we can show the world how it's done. So go all out!! No one else has ever heard of something like a Vuvuzela. It's home grown. No one has it. No one knows how to blow one.

I'm with Bridget on Italy being disappointing. I think England deserved to win.

Brenda  said:

I dont think vuvuzela's should be banned at all, it has become a South African Trade Mark in the world cup and and it has in its own way brought the nation together to stand united for our country.

I do however agree with you that it would also be nice to be able to hear the crowds applause and cheers.

Regarding the Vuvu's, i met some American's on Friday while watching the Bafana game and they said they have the vuvu's in the states but they are not as loud as the ones in our country. Something to be rather proud of i would say, the vuvu's create an atmosphere and like Alexis said on Monday, when there is a free-kick the vuvu's start off softly and then build up as does the tention. I think that every person should be free to support in a way that they feel comfortable and fit. For example, blowing a vuvu or standing up and screaming at the TV like me watching the England games :)

They are annoying at times yes :) but then again its all part of the fun! To a certain extent but trust SouthAfrican to abuse it... Germany rules!!

I would say the teams that dissapointed me was England and Italy. They seemed to battle out there, I was not wowed by them as I was by Germany. Funny thing is they are the ones that are complaining about the vuvuzelas and the ball etc. Too much drama from the top teams, what happened to a good old challenge, embrasing something new.

Jeandre  said:

I think that the vuvu's must be banned from any sports... it spoils the 'adrenaline' rush at the stadium.
