World Cup 2010 – opening concert

I had tickets to the FIFA World Cup opening concert, but I must say I did not fancy the thought of being out late at night in such cold temperatures and gave my tickets away to a relative. The fact that it was broadcast in HD, which is basically a better view of the concert but without the concert atmosphere, made it an easier decision.

Shakira in particular, was brilliant and I think her performance of the Waka Waka song was fabulous together with the backing choir. The concert was professional and full of stars and capped a very interesting three weeks at the Orlando Stadium which already had hosted the Super 14 Final which the Blue Bulls won.

Rushed home in a frenzy to watch the opening and enjoyed it thoroughly, was a bit disappointed because it was so short - but then again, it had umph and brought the message through brilliantly. I missed Johnny Clegg - really expected a surprise performance from him - would have been truly awesome!

I must agree with Elaine, black eyed peas arent that good at singing live, but the show they put on for the crowd and viewers at home was awesome, and shakira was by far the best live.

I watched alittle of the concert on the tv a few days later and you lose alot of atmosphere but watching it through the tv. It was very loud at the concert with people going crazy the whole time but on the tv it seemed a little soft on the sound side.

And for all of those who have watched a good concert live and then watched it on dvd or tv afterward can agree that the live concert blows the recorded show out of the water.

I enjoyed the concert BUT catching the metrorail and watching the opening game was really awesome! Then flying a private charter to CT for the England game with Princes William and Harry have to be my World Cup highlight so far:)

I loved the “Waving Flag” song by K’naan with Will.I.Am – It seemed to not only move the crowd but viewers at home too.

It's a pity so few good South African artists were included in the billing for the concerts however we have to be mindful of the amount of tourists we have in the country right now and which artists they would also like to hear and see. All in all it was a fantastic concert....I certainly don't need an excuse to party!

I watched the concert, it was brilliant. The sound for some of them was not great. Shakira herself was lacking in the vocals, but where she was lacking she made up with the performance

We dressed warm, had a shot of tequila each and went to the concert. I didn't enjoy the really long walk from the parking to the bus and the cold weather. However, the atmosphere was lovely, eveyone was very excited and friendly.
I thought the concert was an hour too long, though. To me it was pretty obvious that the organisers had to be politically correct to include enough authentic African performers - despite the fact that some of them were awfully boring. I couldn't believe that Parlotones only sand 1 song, while some band from Malawi (which made the audience yawn and rush outsides to get beers or go to the toilet) spend at least 15 minutes on the stage.
Overall it was an interesing and unusual performance, but the inconvenience of parking, walking a lot, waiting on queues, etc was a put-off.
Shakira was fantastic. She always is!

Being the lucky relative to receive that much appreciated ticket along with my girlfriend, we were lucky enough to be engulfed in a crowd of warm bodies shielding us from the cold cold weather. Wrapped up in the heart of the crowd there was so much positive energy and excitement when the main concert started with the black eyed peas and their flashy show had as all super pumped up and excited and that excitement continued through out the show.

Waka waka was definitely a highlight and knaan wave your flag was very well received by the crowd.

I watched the opening concert and thought it was amazing, Shakira was great and there were a few performances that almost convinced me to go to bed rather but it was well worth the wait of seeing Alicia Keys and Shakira.
