The AARTO Act has been implemented in a few areas and on a pilot basis in Johannesburg since February last year. This is the system whereby you get demerit points and once you get 12 points, your driver’s licence will be suspended and after three suspensions you will lose your driver’s licence altogether. At the moment, apparently traffic offenders are being fined in terms of the AARTO Act, as opposed to the Criminal Procedure Act, and in terms of the AARTO Act, only 50% of the fine needs to be paid if the fine is paid within 32 days.

I also think it is all about money making. All the toll gates popping up like mushrooms. They are doing this in Australia, and now they want to implement it in SA

This AARTO act is only another money making scheme from Government with many loopholes . No clear definitions leaving it open for interpretation. The only way around it is bribery or hours and hours of waiting

it will only oparate to increase corruption, more than what it intends to curb, which is reckless driving.

remember, the metro 'police' often accept cash on the spot (bribes), and these are usually a whole lot less than the actual fine intself...

Does that mean they will double the fine amount so they still cover their costs?
