Buying shares

One of the things I believe in, when it comes to buying shares, is that you should only buy shares in companies that you know, and typically use their products. For example, I don’t use the products I have seen the professional hairstylists of GHD flying out of shops, and I hear from my staff that most of them now have them.

This is a product that has only been around for 8 or 9 years and if they were listed I would certainly buy their shares. Their own website says that their annual sales reached £12 million in 2003, by 2006 the sales were £75 million and a year later they were £115 million and I can assure you it is simply flying off the shelves in South Africa at the moment. I presume it is a private company, because I cannot find evidence of any listed company who owns it at the moment. According to websites, the secret to the product’s success is a revolutionary iron that straightens hair between two heated ceramic plates. GHD, by the way stands for “Good Hair Day”. In any event, the moral of the story is not how GHD might do wonders for women’s hair – it is a good example of how you should be trying to select and buy the shares that you hold.

Magnus, as you say most people don't have a clue what they are buying shares in. For me a good starting point is not to buy shares in things you do not understand - nor to get involved in any investment that is not regulated and listed on, for eg, the JSE. There are certainly many things you need to consider, but one of the lessons I have learnt is not to simply rely on the tips of experts and do my own research and look at companies and products I at least have some understanding of.

I am a more hands on investor and what works for me may not work for someone who does not do proper research - or might not be able to spot a product or entity that is doing well.

I would not have got involved in Sharemax for a number of reasons including the fact that I avoid things that are not listed, I am nervous of anything that offers way above average returns and lastly I read, and there have been warnings, way too subtle though, in the media for years about Sharemax.

Micheal, buying shares in a company just because you use the company's products are just as dangerous as using a lawyer just because you like his red tie.
Or, trying to defend yourself in court by presenting evidence that you heard last night in the bar.
The judge will laugh you out of court.
Buying shares is far more complicated than that and MOST people do not have a clue what they are buying and investing in. Just look at what is happening with the thousands of elderly investors who have money in Sharemax and before that, Krion Financial Services.

There is always something new I learn in this office. The discovery of the day is what GHD stands for :)
How do you buy shares? Online? Can you do it yourself or you need to act via financial broker?

I've got one and am ashamed to say ive only used it about 5 times. What a waste! They are are pretty pricey but absolute quality. the bed that the hair goes on protects your hair when using it because it is made of a ceramic type of material. I would definatly say invest in one.

GHD is certainly the Bentley of Hair straighteners :) I got my first I think in 2005 /6 and I've actually had the same one for all these years, it really is the best- I couldnt share so my sister got her own one - I think if shares were available it would be an investment to invest in it! GHD is a whole new revolution! (All my guy friends use them too!!)
