Commonwealth Games 2010

The Commonwealth Games are currently on the go, and while they are certainly getting a lot of TV coverage, I really think that the hype about how well South Africa is doing, should be balanced against the fact that there are very few nations that are members of the Commonwealth, and even less, that put any of their finances into sport as is the case with a number of big countries who naturally would not be taking part in the Commonwealth Games such as the United States.

Australia invests a lot in their sport stars and their various Sports Academies and is romping home in terms of the medal table. Of course it is nice to see our athletes and representatives winning some medals, but we should not miss the fact that the countries that typically dominate international sports events, like the Olympics, are not taking part – namely: the United States, Russia and China.

Kenya, who ARE competing in the commonwealth games, always dominate middle to long distance on the track at the Olympics. Jamaica, who ARE competing in the commonwealth games, are always a SIGNIFICANT force in sprint events at the Olympics ... let's not forget Nigeria's strength at the Olympics in sprint events as well. Then there's AUSTRALIA who are ALWAYS a dominant force at the OLYMPICS in numerous disciplines. Oh and then there's cycling - if I recall - the British DOMINATED the cycling at the last Olympics. Well done South Africa - your performances at the commonwealth games (and the commonwealth games as an event) deserve all the hype.

i agree 100% they make such a big hype about how many medals we have so far,but as you and my husband states as well, think about it people we are competing against nobodys basically, and the likes of the few big countries that are there are running away with the top medals

I think everything should be viewed relatively yes, but not negatively. You cannot constantly keep your excitement controlled because you are winning but not in the BIGGEST competition so it's not as good. That is like saying the child you wins the debate at school should not be too happy as she has not won at the national event. Every is relative. Thinking like this can lead to pessimism. I say WELL DONE!!!!

I am not really following the Games, but have been listening to the news concerning the amount of medals won for South Africa, and I must admit I am proud of our Country. Whether the other countries are competing or not, South Africa is making a name out there and that is what matters most. GO S.A.
