It is a sign of the tough economy that we find ourselves in that Standard Bank is retrenching some 2 000 staff members. This country already has an extremely high unemployment rate and it is always sad when a company has to retrench staff. We often forget how big the impact is, because it would be very rare that that one person who is retrenched, is supporting just themselves – in most instances they are supporting partners, children and sometimes even relatives, even if it is in a very small way.

I wonder what the criteria to choosing who will be retrenched was? I hope colour did not play a role because one of the best branch managers in Pretoria who happens to not be white may loose his job. This is very disappointing. Why can't the chairman be removed since he is getting paid most of the money in any case.

A man who has been committed to Standard Bank for more than 25 years has now been notified that he may be retrenched/is retrenched. This is utterly unfair and if this man is retrenched I, together with all his customers will leave this bank. This is utter rubbish and thorough investigations need to be done.

My boyfriend's sister just lived through the first round, although 5 people in her office and of similar rank were given the boot. One of them committed suicide. She is only "safe" though until March when they do "round two".

Add to my previous comment, the pensioners lunch was paid for by Standard Bank.... Jobs or lunches? Lunches in, jobs out...

My aunt who is a pensioner of Standard Bank attended her pensioners year-end lunch yesterday and said that in the introduction to the lunch they discussed the retrenchment and naturally the 'big dogs' were first to go, they also terminated the contracts of the all contact workers. Its sad cause its your bread and milk and many other things.

i heard their chairman is getting a big fat bonus on top of his big fat salary. i'm sure his bonus alone would be enough to keep more than a few of those 2000 employed.
