There were a number of advertisements this past weekend for the toll fees that are going to be charged on all the highways around Gauteng, at approximately 66c a kilometre. At 66c a kilometre, people are really going to incur high charges fairly quickly, and for many who may use the highways to get to work, it is really going to be an added tax.
It is one thing if a new road is built and paid for by toll, but it always offends one if a road you have been using all the time, suddenly becomes a toll road and you are advised that this is going to ease congestion. How is it going to ease congestion? Is everyone going to stop using it because you now have to pay 66c a kilometre and for those who now pay, congestion will be eased? Quite frankly, I think that is absolute nonsense, and I cannot imagine that suddenly the highways are going to get faster. What they may have meant to say was that the money you are paying to use your already congested highway, may lead to another highway being built somewhere else, which will reduce congestion there, but the actual motivation and argument seems like nonsense and it really just gets down to being yet another tax on people who are already paying too much.

This is a lot of bull. I am VERY unhappy. It will cost me R1000 plus for the toll road and that amount from my little salary is going to kill me!! I start to think if it will be worth it to keep on working - WHAT FOR - TO ENRICH THE GOVERNMENT and SANRAL??!! I don't think so!!

i am not buying e-tag and i am not going to pay even if they send the account to me they might as well arrest me. i am sick and tired of making people rich while we cannot afford basics. we pay tax for everything and our goverment misuse it, it is time to take a stand and say no to nonsense they are making even if it means taking to the street. if we all dont buy those tags and dont pay they will not win. keeping quite will be our downfall

I am not affected as I dont travel on the freeway to travel to and from work, weekends is another story living on the Westrand but spending every weekend on the Eastrand. A trip to and from once a week will cost me R400 a month, i.e R100 a return trip.
Backroads are now going to become chaotic.
They said that everyone should just fail to pay their accounts that will be posted to them (if they don't have an e-tag) - obviously every car owner's details are accessible by the department of transport (so we cannot esacape receiving these bills). If every person neglects to pay their accounts, it will casue so much administrative effort from SANRAL to send follow-up accounts, letters and handing over of accounts, that they reckon eventually they will just give up. I don't know about this so much, but an interesting approach nontheless.

Absolutely not. Hell no.
Feel like we are all being bullied into this.

This is just another excuse for corruption and exorbetent bonuses. Why are they taxing us so high? Trucks apparently will be tolled more which in turn will push consumer living expences up. I think at the end of the day this will cripple our economy. How will small businesses that use transportation for delivery etc survive? The problem with this country is that it lives in what is now and fails to see what effects of today's decisions have on tomorrow. People will once again have no money to spend which in turn will effect the economy. I will joining the millions who will be driving through suburbs and towns only. Just hope they bring the charges down.
