My brother and I had to fly to Durban recently for different meetings, and he arranged to fly via Kulula from Lanseria and I arranged to fly via SAA from OR Tambo. I explained to him that it was because I’ve had far too many problems with delays on Kulula flights in the past. As luck would have it, flights from every destination on the way to Durban were delayed because there was an electrical storm.
My SAA flight however was still delayed for a shorter time frame than his Kulula flight and on the way back, when there was no storm of any type, my flight left on time and landed 10 minutes early whereas his Kulula flight arrived 3 hours later. It seems that the longer the day wears on, the more their flights run behind time and quite frankly I would rather pay more, and travel further, than to fly with an airline that does not run as many delays or as lengthy delays.

I had an emergency in JHB in March 2011 so I thought I would use British Airways, very expensive and on time and no delays. But to my surprise I was at DBN airport from 4pm and my flight was at 5.45pm, delayed to 6.50pm another delayed to 7.20pm and another delay, boarded the flight at 7.55pm reached JHB at 9pm. The cost of parking at the recieving end and inconvience was not good and not a single staff from BA to explain..sent an email and to this day no reply.Never again....

I have had a pleasant experience with both airlines thus far- and have been given no reason to complain about either one ....just yet:-)

I have to admit that i also had a bad experience with Kulula. I flew to Durban and my flight was delayed and i only arrived in Durban at 21h30 when my flight was schedule to land at 19h00. Not only was the flight delayed, but there was a horrific smell in the plane , and not even an apology from the air stewards for the stench that made one cringe with disgust. So its safe to say that i will never fly Kulula again, and would also much rather pay extra for a much more pleasurable flight experience.

Best option pay for the better service or face all the delays and bad service.

From what I hear Kulula flights are delayed 95% of the time, I will be flying for the first time of SAA so lets hope there's no delays on the Easter weekend.

the convenience of having Lanseria close to home with no traffic issues, does not make up for the delays at the airport. I have also flown with them on a number of occasions, and on every occasion there have been delays. it seems with Kalula that the only question regarding delays is, how long is your going to be... in future I will do the gautrain and OR Tambo.

The cheaper airlines pay cheaper airport fees are always bumped off first if the airport needs to delay a flight. They also park further away from the airport buildings are more must always give precedence to another aeroplane when approaching for landing. I usually fly British airways. Better food and leg room. Although Kulula is a subsidiary of BA they still don't have the benefits of preferential treatment by the airports and therefore delays are inevitable. SAA pilot training isn't great so I tend to stay away.

I have experienced only pleasureable service on Kulula flights. British airways was the one I did not particularly like.
