The Government is now going to be setting up training centres for taxi drivers. I am sure we will hear a fair share of jokes about that, but any improvement with regard to road safety will lead to huge savings for the Road Accident Fund, and such steps are to be welcomed. If the whole industry was properly regulated, and I mean in every respect, including with regard to tax, the society as a whole would be a lot better of as thousands of people over the years have died, not only in taxi accidents, but as a result of taxi wars, shootings and route disputes.

It's quite strange that there would be those who would want to laugh at or joke about this initiative. We always complain that government is not doing enough to "harness" the taxi drivers. This is the first ever commitment of this nature from the government, yet our first reaction is to think that someone will be joking about it. Aren't we just strange creatures and our own worst enemies?

I know there will be laughs about the proposed government plans. However, if they are offering solutions to the problems, let us welcome their plans with open arms. It is a step in the right direction.

I believe that the taxi industry has already come along way. Yes, like all fields you have your rotten eggs but I think they are more curtious and civilised today, perhaps I have just gotten used to them and have accepted that this is some people's only means of transport. If you look at every taxi and how many people are inside each taxi and then you take away the taxis and give them private cars. Our roads will not handle the volumes.
