There have been a few varying reports recently as to whether or not the airlines would be allowed by the CAA to start allowing passengers to have their cell phones on. A friend of mine, who has his pilot’s licence, has always told me that the rule is absolute nonsense – the cell phones don’t interfere in any way with any of the equipment of the plane, and the rule is more a question of controlling passengers and not having everybody on their phones the entire time. I would imagine that the ban will remain, but I think that the concerns would probably, without them telling us that, be more to do with security than with anything else.

I think it could cause quite a stir having a plane full of people all talking on their cell phones at the same time. Quite fun to watch maybe?

I think that it is pathetic how many places make so many rules to try rule people in general. I think that people should be allowed to have their cell phones on encase of emergencies. Could you imagine that if they didn't put such a stupid rule on planes to control people, the people from the 9/11 would of been able to advise and warn and also would of been able to at least say good bye to their loved ones.

Whether it interferes with the equipment or not, cellphones on airplanes = NOISE POLLUTION!! Can you imagine being on an overseas flight and at 02h00 the person next to you's phone rings and they answer and chat!?!? No way

I am al for the ban remaining. The thought of getting into a confined space with hundreds of others talking away about different topics, different pitches and different languages would make for an extremely unpleasant flight. I use flights to catch up on good books i have not read. And let's face it, even busy businessmen can do with some free/quiet time.

I flew on a small private plane a short while ago, and had my cell phone on the whole time. I used it to send BBM's and SMS's. Coverage was a bit 'patchy' as we flew from JHB to Springbok, but it had zero effect on the plane instruments - i was sitting next to the pilot at the time...
