I was surprised when I heard that Groupon turned down the $6 billion offer from Google, and even more amazed when the company was allegedly valued at $30 billion. That had all the signs of a bubble to me, because I cannot imagine that a company that gives out vouchers to the public, for half price services, could ever achieve such value.
There are a number of problems with its model that would prevent many retailers from using it, and those include the fact that people who chase discounts don’t necessarily actually ever become loyal customers. In other words, you pay a lot of money to get in a new client but you don’t retain them. Interestingly enough, Groupon are now talking about trying to arrange financing for their IPO of $3 billion – less than half of what Google was prepared to buy them for a year ago, and which offer they rejected.

Groupon can be a great website if you have time and money to sit and wait for great specials, but it is well annoying to receive the emails if you are not that into the everyday specials.

I think something like Groupon is great to make a couple million and then shut down. Hey you made then! No need to continue for years. The world is too fickle for any long term loyalty anyway, I refer to a similar comment you made in your blog about Apple becoming redundant. So, in my opinion, Groupon, Wicount, Kulula's deals etc are absolutely awesome for me as the customer and I love them! I have saved so much money buying things I needed using the discounts and every single one has been valid, a great deal and a great saving! So I am happy! Whether Groupon lasts does not matter to me as long as another company replaces them and the competition continues to cause bigger discounts!

Unfortunately for Groupon retrospect has come far too late. I agreed that offering vouchers will not necessarily create long term customers unless the service rendered is outstanding – and that still will not ensure customer retention because they will be offering another discount next week for a similar product or service down the road. Arrogance in business… very short sighted

I completely agree with what Michael said about people who chase discounts don't usually become loyal customers. Well... I have to admit that I'm one of those "bargain shoppers" and I'll buy just about anything from anyone if the price is right and that's why I love Groupon. Another thing I love about Groupon is that I can send gifts to friends or family almost anywhere around the world as more that 150 cities are using this service worldwide.

I enjoy the offers on this site. I used one of their sushi and spa vouchers and it was not bad at all. The only problem is you have to register to check out the site and you receive e-mails every day which I find pretty annoying. If I want good offers I will check it out myself and not get bombarded with e-mails every day.

Angie actually explained this website to me...
It sounds awesome :) Google just wants everything and they like things. hahaha
