I was happy to see that Eskom had launched a solar power station to produce renewable energy sources for their own coal fire power stations. Solar photovoltaic technologies naturally use the power of the sun to generate electricity and that is clearly the way to go.
I have always believed in a green office and have done my best to instruct my architects and builders in that regard. My offices have hot water provided by solar power and more than 50% of the hot water that I have at home is likewise provided by solar power. Interestingly enough, the geyser that runs on solar power typically has a higher temperature, certainly at this time of the year, than the one running on electricity and as we all know the sun is really far more powerful than anything we could invent. It is just a question of harnessing it, and we need to do a lot more of that!

I would love for all to go solor hower. However, the government really needs to subsidise this project, far more than it is. I stay in a two bedroomed double story town house and i got a quote for R17 000.00. It is all good and well that it pays it self off, it is the initial outlay that is stopping more people putting in soloar heating.

My in-law's neighbors have the complete solar system and they even have hot water in the winter without any problems. It is sufficient, green and you save a lot of money. I disagree with Angie, it depends on the type of solar system you put in but the one my in-law's neighbors has, their lights are bright and they have really hot water 24/7.

This is a great Launch done by Eskom, I believe that it can ony get better from here on. This will defenitely lessen the power outages and lets pray that we power shortages can be a thing of the past.
Well done to the team that came up with this idea.

I am a firm believer of living green. I have not done much in terms of living green- besides planting a tree a while back with my family.
I would like to recycle more, ecspecially now that I am working and seeing how much paper we waste everyday I feel I need to play my part in helping our environment.
Through these renewable energy projects South Africa will have the opportunity to be a hub for the rest of the African continent for developing renewable energy technology.
GO GREEN!!

I read a very interesting article in the newspaper last month.
Where Eskom said that the first stage of the pilot project was designed to introduce renewable energy sources to supply power for internal use at Eskom's coal-fired power stations
This would reduce the company's carbon footprint by approximately 2845 tons per annum.

I think this is fantastic and more bussineses should support this.
I do think we could do with a few more boxes in our offices to recycle paper.

I think its great that they have finally launched solar power station, going green is definitely the way to go. The only thing I don't like is that water doesn't get as hot as what it normally would and the lighting is not that bright. Its annoying but its better than having no power at all! Besides all of that going green with solar power saves electricity and ultimately saves money! Way cheaper! I just would like to know will this power work in winter??

We installed a solar geyser at home - personally it's disappointing as during the winter months it's barely warm. Luckily we are close to the Egoli Gas lines and have installed this. We now have all of our ovens, hobs and 2 of the 3 geysers on gas and it is wonderful. Our electricity bill has gone down from R4000 a month to R2000 a month including electricity and gas - now that's amazing - so even when the power is out, in the middle of the night we will have hot water

I like the fact that they are going green, so much more healthier and more efficient than having to cut power because there is not enough.
