Media report that 1,35 Million condoms given away during the African National Congress’ Centenary Celebrations are being recalled. Apparently many of these broke during sex and others were porous – which sort of defeats the object of a condom!
An activist of the Treatment Action Campaign apparently complained to the media saying that, “We had people flocking in, coming to report that the condoms had burst while they were having sex.” Apparently many panicked because they were already infected with AIDS and were concerned for their partners. After the complaints started coming in, the Treatment Action Campaign tested them, by pouring water into the condoms and apparently, they were leaking, not just in one place, “… they were leaking like a sieve … you can see where there are small pores.” They have asked all people who used these condoms, distributed free around Bloemfontein in January, to go and get “post-exposure tests and treatment”.

I cannot believe this! Absolutely shocking. I cannot imagine the amount of people who used these condoms and now could be on their death bed. You just need to really be safe who you actually have sex with and need to know and trust the person enough that he would allow to tell you his status. Condoms are clearly not 100% safe!

Should a person who is already infected with AIDS even consider having sex with anybody be it with a condom or not?
Would an incident like this not cause an attitute of "why wear them if they don't work in any case", amongst communities who were hard in convincing to wear them in the fisrt place and thereby shattering all the hard work of activists trying to educate people about the dangers of Aids.

This is a big dilema, but it seems as if nothing is going to happen about it. All that's being done is they asking for the condoms to be recalled, im sure that half of what was distributed has been used. They seem to have these seious talks about the disease, but they are not taking it half way serious. Just shows those people are not doing it for the love of protecting SA, but it has become just a JOB to them

That is quit distubing news. Not all people who used those condoms will come forward and get the right treatment.
In that case the disease will never stop spreading.

I am beyond shocked! This might be a lesson to the government to be more careful but for many of the people putting their trust in it it’s too late. Surely it must be possible for criminal proceedings to be instituted. It is after all attempted murder isn’t it?

This is a very interesting blog. I can remember that we were taught in school that a condom is only 85% safe. It is actually scared that people are so uneducated. How can they call it safe sax when it’s not that safe? Would you climb in an aeroplane if they tell you that there is only an 85% chance that the plane will have a safe landing?

Wow!
This is bad. I'm hoping and praying that the partners does not have HIV, they use condoms to prevent it but yet there is a chance that they might have it.
Shame man.

I am in complete shock as we have had soo many talks , campaigns, lessons and the list goes on about having safe sex and how important a condom is.
now one cant even put their trust in condoms anymore. I guess prevention is cure.. May this be a lesson to the QC to do quality control correctly!

Every week there is another shock-horror. Like Brenda said, it would make sense to not staple a condom to a pamphlet, but then again, what do we expect by all that the government does incorrectly? It is so sad, and scary, that this is what our country relies on...

I am not surprised that the condoms leaked so badly. When you are handing out free condoms it should be common sense not to staple a condom onto a pamphlet!!!

Wow, that is shocking.
Talking about safe sex etc and they go and do something as stupid as this.
I feel so sorry for those people whom might have been exposed to something that shouldn't have happened in the first place.
