Mobile rates in other countries

I think people will be stunned to continue to discover how much we pay in South Africa, compared to other countries. Israel last month granted 5 companies licences to run cellular services. The new prices are R180,00 per month for unlimited calls, unlimited SMS’s and uncapped fast 3G Internet access. All of those, uncapped and unlimited – so for R180,00 a month you can make all the phone calls, send all the SMS’s and surf the Internet all day and all night. They let you sign up online and a few hours later the SIM card gets delivered to you.

There are more people in South Africa, it is a bigger market than Israel and yet we don’t really get unlimited calls – we get 1 500 packages for R1 150,00 a month and if you want more than that, you will pay more than that. It boggles the mind that prices can be so high in South Africa. I guess ultimately it gets down to lack of competition, and when a competitor was finally allowed into the market, in the form of Cell C, they were so far back in the market that they never really had much of a chance to succeed.

The problem with South Africans is, we are a country of non-complainers and we just accept what is slapped in front of us. If more people complained, services would go up. But, we have just become accustomed to bad service and we live with it. Why i ask myself on a daily basis?

Hi, I visitted Kenya for about 4 weeks. During this time I found that I paid between 1 and 3 shillings per minute depending on the conditions ofcourse. Even so 3 Kenyan Shilling is about 18c in SA

I went to Namibia last year December, and their rates are quite different for example I paid R60 for blackberry’s internet for only 7 days, where I pay here R60 for a month, but then their call rates is much cheaper than ours

I feel the same as Kaylene - moving to Ireal. Scary that countries with a smaller market can give more.

It is ridiculous. I have a Talk 100 package (100 anytime minutes and a few weekend minutes) and with data, maybe 10 smses a month, phone etc it costs me like R700... For 100 minutes and a few downloads!!!

Ridiculous!

I must say this is absolutely rediculous the prices we have to pay and now compaired to a counrty like israel it just seems even more mad.

Absolutely ridiculous! Thing is no one ever wants to change to cell c because it doesnt seem like a top or advanced service provider when in actual fact I've heard nothing but good things about Cell C. One thing is for sure, I wont go with the service provider I'm with now. Per month is sooo expensive and I have no signal after 5, I have complained and had nothing but trouble. Need more competitors out there!
