Corruption never stops

I was shocked to read that the police are probing allegations that the people answering the 10111 number in Port Elizabeth are taking bribes in order to delay emergency alerts.  There are apparently claims that the telephone operators delay the dispatch of police vehicles or other emergency vehicles to the scene of the accident to allow the tow-truck drivers and private ambulance drivers who have made deals with them and bribe them, to get there first.

In other words, they tip-off their paying contacts, who may be far further away from the scene of the accident, and then delay notifying the police and other sources so the people who have paid them can get there first.  Apparently, two-truck drivers and medics have confessed to the Weekend Post newspaper that they do pay the call centre staff to delay dispatching the police to the scene and the police are now going to investigate these bribery and corruption allegations.  It is a terrifying indictment of our society and of an obsession for material greed that would allow operators like this to put the lives of people at risk, so as to make an extra buck, and it is a frightening reminder sometimes of the stories one has heard, particularly involving some medical negligence cases at State Hospitals.

this is shocking, what if your life or someone you love depended on the response time...

Money and morals have an estranged relationship it seems.
Those people working behind the phones probably see those callers as a monotonous, faceless crowd. Just distant, intangible objects in their daily lives, on the other-hand, they see themselves and their families as a very real priority. When they are offered money that will benefit themselves, it has no consequence on something so distant. In their selfish minds at least.
Perhaps this is a result of our unforgiving capitalist regime in a society filled to the brim with poverty and poor education. It certainly could be linked to a lack of good role models especially at the governmental level.

OMW this is an utter disgrace. The people involved should have immediate dismissal with not even their one month Salary etc. So now we know why police are so slow, and here we thought it was due to poor service. Although some are very slow and do deliver poor service. Shocking disgrace man.

This is very scary and shocking. Its now going to be something on my mind if I ever need to call the emergency line should I even bother to use it. There is so much bribery in this country that its enough to make you feel sick but this is just really upsetting to learn.

I cannot believe anyone can be shocked at, yet more corruption, in a country that is riddled with it. I do not think there is one government institution left that is not corrupt. The sad thing is, nothing we speak about it but that is where it stops, nothing is done about it.

This is ridicules and scary. Its sad how people will do just about anything for money. Money makes good people do bad things.

I have to agree with Brenda on this one.

Every man for himself...... I think majority of our nation has developed this attitude, "if it doesn't benefit me, then I just don't care" It has become terribly disturbing to hear how much corruption there is everywhere, and all for the benefit of "self". People don't practice "empathy" anymore, because they are so shallow minded, and are more concerned about, as you say, making a quick buck.

People do not care about other people's lifes but I can tell that this is happend all over because each and every scene first people to get there are towing trucks

What people will do for money shocks me sometimes. I cannot believe that they will put other peoples (children's) life's at stake just to get there first. Really, what is our world coming to? Absolute disgrace what they are doing and they actually sleep at night.

This is absolutely disgraceful to say the least. You are playing with people's life's here! Some people have absolutely no shame whatsoever. Someone needs to put a stop to this constant corruption, it is honestly beyond disgusting and out of control in our country.

This is just an outrage!!! Hearing of such despicable deeds makes me sick. Have these people no integrity??? The reason and purpose of an emergency call line, is of course because there is a serious emergency of some sort, and someones life is on the line, really how do these people sleep at night? Everywhere people are so corrupt, and that's why this country will NEVER move forward.
