Shooting lions

There has obviously been a lot of coverage recently about the killing of the lion called Cecil in Zimbabwe by an American dentist.  He has been hounded in that regard and it is certainly going to turn out to be far more costly than what it cost to hunt the lion.  We don’t always appreciate however how big a business this is in South Africa and Zimbabwe and how the hunters pay as much as US$50 000,00 to hunt a lion once you count in the plane tickets, the guides and the hunting fees that they have to pay.  The hunters say that they are not cold-hearted killers, they have a connection with the animal and are often conservationists, but of course those that are anti-hunting will say that is a load of baloney.   I must say that I am against hunting, but one does worry about the approximately US$200 million a year that will be lost throughout Africa if hunting was banned and I would love to know your thoughts.

I completely agree with Liesl, if it is not for food then it is just simply wrong in my eyes. Don't understand where people find the joy in that.

Hunting for survival i.e. food - acceptable. Any other form of hunting I cannot approve that.

I propose the culling of the human species. We are after all the species primarily responsible for the destruction of planet Earth. Would it not be beneficial if we did purge?

Hunting to control the animal population in a game reserve is still fine but not for fun,

Ya I am glad they make friends with the poor animal before they kill it, because that obviously makes sense to do it that way. I hate hunting and think it is the most disgusting "sport" ever. I hope this dentist pays everything he owns to South Africa now. I actually get more and more disgraced at this country and the things it allows.

I think hunting to control a population that is out of control is acceptable as long as it is done humanely. Often these people don't even know how to shoot then they injure the animal who runs away and takes a week to bleed to death under a tree and that is unacceptable. I also think hunting any species that is becoming extinct is unacceptable as well as canned hunting where the animal doesn't have a chance to escape. I think hunting should be done using a bow and arrow so that there is a skill needed to be learnt, you need a licence first and then you can go out and hunt. I also think you Must eat what you have hunted otherwise do not hunt it for example Polar Bears!

Needless to say I haven't read about a woman going out hunting it is always the men and their egos!

I am not against the hunting of general game species (antelope) if done in an ethical manner. I am against "trophy hunting" during which animals like lions and leopards are shot.

I am one of those that are against it. I find it quite disgusting to purposefully go out and hunt something you know will not have a chance against you.

I don`t have a problem with hunting. But there must be a reason why your hunting, not just for the sport of it.

if it is done in an ethical and sustainable manner, i have no issues.
