Eat fat, get thin

The title of this blog article is the latest book from Dr Mark Hyman.  He had a number of New York Times best selling books including The Blood Sugar Solution and I have referred to him in my blog previously.  He is another one of those that is joining the revolution that started long before Dr Tim Noakes, who wrote about it in South Africa, towards eating more fat.

I enjoy skim reading these books, but I must say by the time I got through everything I cannot eat, I start struggling to find what I can still eat!  I understand that alcohol is not good for you, that natural sweeteners are bad, that artificial sweeteners are worse, that processed foods of any kind are not good for you, etc. We need to add to that that you should avoid refined vegetable oils, all dairy products other than grass-fed butter, beans which apparently have too much starch, all grains including quinoa and buckwheat, because these spike blood sugar and insulin, not to mention gluten, which is apparently hidden everywhere!  Oops, I see I left out all fruit because it is also a source of sugar.

We pretty much get left eating grass-fed beef, grass-fed lamb, some poultry, shellfish, almond milk, nuts, some seeds and avocado.  They do say you can have dark chocolate as a treat at the end of 21 days.  The parts I liked are for their recommendations to take a sauna, get a massage and get plenty of sleep.   Truthfully, I don’t mind eating healthily, as long as it is all prepared for me and I guess if I could pop into Woolworths and buy one of these “perfect” meals, then I would probably be eating it.  Until then, I will continue to follow advice about having a bit of PGX every now and then, because that is a super fibre made of some root, together with seaweed fibres, which does have the effect of reducing one’s appetite if you take a glass of it before every meal.  Ideally, they say you should drink two glasses of water with it and I am not sure if your appetite is removed because of the PGX or just the effect of two glasses of water just before you try to eat!

If you plan your diet properly and have enough time to cook and shop around and of course know shops where you trust of buying necessary food then your diet will work! And of course making your diet as the life style, not to give yourself break and spend money on take away junk food like oily chips and deep fried food. I found some people are getting very ill this way and have to be admitted to the hospital, because of not following the diet and eating suddenly to much junk food!!!! Everything in moderation. And of course the moderation will not be so expensive to maintain.

it is really hard to eat healthy, there is no excuse to why we should eat unhealthy, but it is just more confienient after a days work and you get home after being stuck in traffic and you are tired and just throw something together, i am honest, i am not a healthy eater as i just eat what is the easiest and quickest to make. i should stop doing that.

D.I.E.T. = Did I Eat That? D.I.E.T. = Do I Eat Today? D.I.E.T. = Don't Indulge Every Time.

The way you think, the way you behave, the way you eat, can influence your life by 30 to 50 years.

We can make a commitment to promote vegetables and fruits and whole grains on every part of every menu. We can make portion sizes smaller and emphasize quality over quantity. And we can help create a culture - imagine this - where our kids ask for healthy options instead of resisting them.

Eating healthy should be a way of life. It is not easy though, I myself eat junk food which i know i should not eat, but do anyways. Love my burgers. A good home cooked meal, and the simplest meals are good. It does not have to be expensive. The other day somebody bought ingredients for a soup and it cost him R15 and my word, it made a lot and it was good.

Everytime you eat or drink you are either feeding or fighting a disease. Healthy shouldnt be a goal but a way of living, however there are so many convienant fast food restaurants around that we cant help ourselves take the easy way out because its late.. If only they served more health consicious foods at places that were cost effective.

I disagree that eating well is expensive. Eating healthily requires education and motivation and of course prioritizing it.Yes, you have to take time to cook but on the long run you will save money and time on not going to doctors and buying meds etc.
Vegetables are not expensive in South Africa. Next time you are in at a grocery shop, please compare a price of a whole cabbage and a loaf of bread. Cabbage is cheaper but much healthier, and you can cook it in 100 different ways!
Root vegetables, spinach, kale can be be so tasty and cost couple of rands per day.
Brown rice and lentils are cheaper than meat and million times better for your body.

I think that a diet or eating plan should be specific to ones own body. For me personally, I would prefer a book on how to gain weight and to keep the weight I gain.

Eating healthy is so difficult today, whats healthy today might not be healthy tomorrow and we are constantly changing our diet... I do find that we need to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables eating less processed foods. These days the healthier our food are the more expensive they are as well and we need to keep a balance of what we eat.

Healthy eating was always a problem for me it is so difficult to eat healthy as much as I want to eat healthy I can't get myself in doing so. I whish my mother raised me in eating only healthy foods then the fatty foods would have been a no-no for me. After all this I still won't eat healthy as it is a fortune to maintain.

In my opinion diets or eating plans should be done by dieticians as we are all individuals with all individual needs. That is the only way to loose weight the right way.

I still believe in everything in moderation. I also firmly believe in daily exercise. I do believe in cutting out certain types of food like bread and dairy. The only reason I would cut out certain food groups would depend on my bodies reaction to those specific foods.

Reading a blog of this nature surely does make a person feel extremely guilty about the food we are consuming. I love food, and there is nothing more irritating for me than a meal that I do not enjoy. I have heard of the Banting diet and whilst it does sound very appealing considering the fact that you can eat bacon, cheese and fatty foods, the fact that I cannot eat carbs or consume any sugar at all is what puts me off completely. Now I am not a sweet tooth at all, cakes etc. are not appealing to me, but I do consume sugar in other things ie coffee, cereal etc. and I would definitely struggle to let go of carbs.

Healthy eating is also not pocket friendly, and in today's times and cost of living being so expensive, I am just grateful to have food on the table every night regardless of what it is.

Diets or rather 'eating plans' should be person dependant!

That being said - I am not one for same.

Each of us should worry about eating sustainable foods!

Our food choices should be sustainable choices - if it means avoiding grain feed beef (taking into account our drought) then so be it!

I try to eat healthy every day. I prepare my food at night but healthy food takes a lot of time to prepare.
Its much easier to go to a drive through /restaurant order something wait ±15 minutes and then eat. People like the easy way out.
Your mindset needs to be right to eat healthy and not to say you are eating healthy for 3 months but to make it a life style.
If you really want it you will work for it and have no excuses.

Fat girl heard: "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." Fat girl: "Certain spicy, tacos taste better than skinny feels."

Your body shouldn't be an apology, your focus should make a radical shift to self-love and body empowerment. The journey to unapologetic self-love is not always paved with rainbows and self-esteem. I do however believe that when we unapologetically own our beauty, love our scars and heal our "body-shame", we in turn give others permission to do the same.

I will end up to eat nothing at all if I have to listen to all the experts. I think being healthy and fit is all about routine. You have to pre-pare your meals. If you are hungry and you dont have your food ready, you will snack on something or quickly buy something unhealthy. You can get someone to pre-pare your meals for you like FitChef, but like everyone else said, it is quite expensive.

I would do a lot more healthy eating if it was less time consuming and more affordable. Especially when you have a big household to maintain, its not that easy. I also think that healthier meals would be cooked if it was anything like back in the days when women were at home cooking and cleaning for their households while the husbands were at work. Anything convenient now is better.

I can't put myself in the category of "healthy eating". I love my comfort food too much! Although we try to eat vegetables more often, it is not always possible to follow a strict healty diet. Some evenings we just do a quick dinner (pasta) or something fatty which is not healthy, because it's late at night and our bodies won't be able to work off the excess fat during the nigh when we sleep and are inactive..... unfortunately.....

As most of my colleagues commenting on the blog, I too find that eating healthy is expensive. It would be nice to meal prep everyday but then again you cooking/preparing in bulk and end up not eating fresh foods. I do not take diets too seriously because I will not stick to it and then how am I really enjoying life. Those who want to count every calorie and eat super healthy all the time can do so, I on the other hand will just make sure I have ec\everything I want in moderation.

You will always get different fad articles telling you to eat this or eat that, gym x amount of hours a week and blah blah blah. Different health blogs are posted daily telling us how to look and what to do to look that way. Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, its about feeling great, having more energy, improving your outlook, and stabilizing your mood.

Tamzyn  said:
on Tuesday 28-Jun-16 09:51 AM
I couldn't agree more with Brumilde - a healthy diet is often dependant on how much money you have to spend, and how much time you have to prepare the meals. As you said you don't mind eating healthy if it is prepared for you, which many will not have the time to do, or if bought from woolworths, which many will not be able to afford. The quickest and cheapest meals (like a sandwich) will often be the unhealthiest.

Melissa  said:

It is more expensive to eat healthy than to eat unhealthy, because if you compare the prices the healthy products are more expensive, as long as you eat the right quantities then you should be able to maintain your weight.

Bianca  said:

Eating healthy is extremely expensive and it always entails a lot of preparation in terms of getting the meals ready. I think it is almost impossible for most people to eat healthy/healthier due to the high costs involved in preparing healthy meals. I certainly struggle to eat healthy because it is always cheaper to go for the alternative and more convenient meal. I do however wonder about these high fat eating plans and diets, what about cholesterol levels as a result of eating foods so high in fat? To conclude, maybe cutting out the sugar, chips and junk food and eating normal foods and not necessarily extravagantly expensive healthy food is the answer? You will still be healthy to a certain extent...

Melissa P  said:

When reading these books and so called healthy eating tips I feel that the list of foods you are allowed to eat are so minimal. Everyone has something good and bad to say about every diet for eg that too much fat is bad for your heart and minimum intake of carbs is good. I believe that every person differs and has to addapt to their own healthy eating plan as we have different blood types some are wheat or lactose intolarant. We only live once after all.

Juliet  said:
on Tuesday 28-Jun-16 09:28 AM
Brumilde's comment is spot on, it is expensive to eat and stay healthy. You have to be able to afford all the expensive, healthy food as opposed to pap, for example. And like you say this type of eating is not easy, it always needs special cooking and is time consuming so you need to afford to pay someone to cook for you or to have enough time yourself which is difficult if you are working full day because you need a salary. And then of course you need to exercise and once again you need to be able to afford gym fees and have time to go to gym.

Besides this, I am pro eating healthily. I grew up on fit for life and was hardly ever sick as a child and I think it gave us a strong foundation for the rest of our lives. I think cooking methods also make a huge difference so even if you can only afford the basic meat, don't fry it, rather boil or steam it to avoid the extra bad oils etc.

Prishani  said:

I think eating healthy has definitely become a trend in this generation, it does become extremely difficult trying to find healthy food especially when one is busy, I have heard many people say that they make special time just to go shopping for healthy food at certain stores. If after 21 days all one can eat as a treat is dark chocolate, Im not sure that Ill be too keen on giving this one try!
