I don’t think most users of Uber will be excited that they are now introducing tipping, but their drivers certainly will be. It is going to take some time to get to South Africa, as it has just started being tested in three cities in America, including Seattle and Houston, and towards the end of July Uber plan to roll it out to more American cities. No doubt, it will not take long after that before it is introduced all around the world.
Drivers will obviously be thrilled to have a chance to earn more than before, but I do hope in our country that money finds its way to the actual drivers and not the owners because in most cases the person driving the car is not actually the owner. What would be interesting to find out is whether or not the drivers have to rate the passenger (because passengers also get rated by the drivers for those of you who don’t know) before or after they get notification as to whether you left them a tip?

I can just imagine all the Taxi's out there what they think of uber. I also hope the tip goes to the drivers and not the owners because at the end it is the drivers that need to sit with the passenger, drunk etc.

I hardly use the service but this is a great idea! Hopefully the driver is not cheated and he actually does get the tip...
I do agree with Henriette though. It seems a bit strange to tip your driver but if you have the means and they got you to your destination safely and carefully then go ahead...

I agree, I hope it even reaches the driver and think that drivers should have some sort of tracking on their tips, like receive an sms to their cell phones letting them know the client has tipped them and that they should be expecting it. I haven't used Uber and I feel that Uber is quite expensive, and personally I wouldn't be able to afford the tip on top of the fare.

It is a great initiative for Uber to introduce this to give drivers an extra income opportunity. However Uber is already expensive but if the service is good one could tip in cash to make sure that the tip goes to the driver.

uber is expensive so i dont use it much, and now the taxi's are fighting with uber here in SA so lets see how that goes, but now they want tips, pfft um no

It gives the drivers a chance to get more income and to show them your appreciation if they are really a friendly driver etc.

I'm not to sure about the tipping a driver. I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand when you use public transport you don't tip the driver, you pay per trip. It's not like they wait on you. Unless you ask them to wait at a certain point for them and they don't charge you for waiting the yes I believe you must tip them. Then again how much do you tip them? Is it compulsory to tip them? and i would also say it depends on how the service was. For me it's the same with parking in a secured / undercover parking where you going to pay for the time you spend in the mall and then tip the security guard on top of it as well. Tipping a waiter is another story.

I have never used Uber before but tipping will be a good idea . its a good way to motivate the drivers more.

Interesting I think it would be fair that the drivers receive a tip and it should not be going to the owner of the car. Uber drivers are not doing the safest job at the moment and all of them are actually still trying to make a living and supporting their families with an honourable job.

I don't think too many Uber uses will be happy with this however, I do think it is important to give a tip, whether it is at a restaurant or the guard looking after your car. It just shows an extra bit of appreciation for a job well done.

I think that it would only be fair that the driver of the vehicle keeps the tips and not the owner.

This company is just getting better. I did not use them yet but I think I will in the future. It all goes about the first impression you have, if it's going to be a good experience you will use them again and again. I am really impressed with Uber

I'm keen on the tipping idea ,some drivers really go above and beyond to make your trip pleasant. However, if it influences their rating on you this would be really concerning as it would only be natural for a driver to rate you less favourably than they otherwise would have had you tipped them.

I have not yet come across an Uber driver who does not own their own car. This would however also be awkward because how much would you tip them

I am not too sure about this one hey. They earn on the trips they do as it is, and then to now introduce tipping. Suppose it would be nice and the drivers will feel a little better of themselves and what they do...I will often get out of the car and they say that they will give me a five star....suppose it is just because they want the same

I think it is a great idea, however i do agree with Jessica A, if it becomes mandatory then I am not sure that the uber service will fair well in our country. But a great way to motivate the drivers to give their absolute best service.

I believe if someone is excellent in the work they are doing. They should definitely get a type of reward every now and then. This new system will also motivate drivers more, just to be better than they already are.

I'm sure the drivers don't earn a very great salary so the tipping system will definitely assist them financially. I hope this works out for their sake

I think this is a good initiative especially for drivers that are friendly and polite after having to drive around primarily intoxicated passengers all day or night. I only hope that getting or not getting a tip will impact on the rating of their passengers.

I have ome across some of the most polite and friendly Uber drivers and I do hope that they recieve their dues! If it becomes mandatory however, it may place an already fairly expensive service beyond the reach of the 'average joe'. With the unrest between Uber drivers and other taxi operators within this country - I do not think it will fair well!

I think the Uber Drivers will be exited about the tipping system, since they will be getting extra cash. I think only if the tipping is compulsory some of the Uber Users will not be exited about the tipping system.

Tipping will be a good idea, I’m not sure how it works but I think they must give you the option to rate and tip the driver on the App, like everyone else said it is not save to have cash on you and at the moment it is not particularly save to use Uber.

I think that this is great because the drivers can benefit. I personally never ever carry cash on me and it always makes it difficult when tipping because you are skeptical about where your tip is actually going. I know of a restaurant in the south that actually only pays their waiters/waitresses their tips at the end of the month as a lump sum payment, this is incredibly unfair because they often need access to money straight away and have to wait until the end of the month.... I make a point now of ensuring that I have cash to actually tip at that particular restaurant! I certainly hope that the Uber drivers will see their tips and no funny business goes on.

Tipping may work in a 1st world country but not ours. It is far safer with Uber and no cash than tipping because now you are putting yourself and your client's at risk. I have never used Uber before but, those of my friends who have, have been very happy with their services. I still think no cash is better though. If there is any other way that one can tip, not a bad idea, but not cash especially, and it pains me to say this, in a 3rd world country like ours :-(

I have to date nit used an Uber. Neither myself nor my husband drinks so I don't think that we will ever need one. I think I would feel uncomfortable getting into a car with a stranger. And the latest Taxi/Uber strikes makes it a bit unreliable.

I still have not used Uber, I just don't see myself getting into a car with a Stranger I rather Drive myself around, And in South Africa this Uber cars are getting Targeted. But I think that rating people if they are a Good Driver or a Good Passengers isn't something that I would do I just ignore this.

I think this would be a great opportunity for the drivers to make some extra money, but also the question of being rated before or after you have tipped them is a good point.

It is a good idea it's an opportunity to make more money. Its like there personal incentive to keep clients happy, but look at the restaurants not all clients tip the waiters either. I usually try tip at least 10 - 15% of bill depending on service but what would they consider reasonable for a driver?
