Making calls from your Apple Watch

Obviously, it was expected that sooner or later somebody, particularly somebody like Apple, would allow you to make good quality phone calls from your watch.  The Apple Watch, which I use, has now come out with Series 3 which will be available from today, 22 September.

The watches retail for $329 in the US and we will have to wait and see what they will cost in South Africa, but of course you can also get fancier versions if, for example, you would like the Space Black Milanese Loop together with the Space Black stainless steel case (I can’t see from the website why that is so “amazing” and worth double the money to be honest), that will set you back $749.  The problem with buying the more expensive ones is of course by next year there will be a whole lot of new features, probably a new Apple Watch and yours will no longer have as much value.

The current Apple Watch is already waterproof, it is very good at tracking your activities and I have no doubt that this version is going to succeed, and succeed in a big way.  I think there is a lot of people who are now on a walk, whp would like to be able to make a phone call, without having to carry their phone.  Of course, there is an ever-increasing level of connectivity which will drive other people nuts!

About 2 years ago I didn’t think Apple watch was great but I think its become a market leader, sales are up and a lot more younger people, in their 20’s and 30’s are using it now.  Is the new Apple Watch, now that it has the ability to make phone calls as well, something that you would want?

*moves wrist to ear and says "hello, but, no thank you."* I may be the only one, perhaps I spend far to much time with the older generation, but, whatever happened to mirror / smoke signals?

I had a sumsang watch phone and it was a nice thing to have sometimes your hands are full then your phone rings you can’t answer but with the watch phone so much easier to answer it was not that far advanced bit had some nice features. I would go for something like that again.

It looks amazing! technology is really thriving. I wouldn't mind owning one. The price is hefty though.

This is a very advanced feature and I'm sure many people will find it very useful. I personally don't think I will be getting an Apple watch any time soon as I feel my cellphone is always on me when I need to make or receive calls and it is not necessary to purchase another gadget for this purpose.

Apple are always the leaders in the market when it comes to new technology. I can see the appeal of being able to leave your bulky phone but not losing connectivity by having your watch on you to make and receive calls. I especially think this will be a hit with active people such as runners knowing how dangerous it is to carry your phone with you, you can now just wear a watch should you need to make an urgent phone call.

This is obviously a pretty cool and useful item to have but I don’t think I would like having the watch on me all the time. I think it also has to do with the size and how it looks once it is on!

I would love to have one of these. Actually I would like anything from Apple. :)

It is a handy feature to have, though I would not get one. I am not really too interested in gadgets to be honest

I have never really enjoyed wearing any jewelry and that also goes for watches etc. So i wouldn't really consider getting myself one, But it its amazing the type of technology going into a watch these days, soon holograms are going to be the new caller ID.

Quite frankly I still prefer a Samsung without a watch to make calls.

My one sister that has an Apple iPhone with the watch. She also has the Macbook / Macbook Pro and once had the iMac. I wonder if she will be interested in the new watch.
I still couldn't be bothered with Apple products. One day when I have more time for Music Production, I will consider Apple Products as I have heard they have the best software for Music Production.

I must say is something that I want, that is the problem about Apple each and every year they come up with something new.

I can’t believe that people will pay so much for a watch. The Apple devices are already so expensive. But I must say it’s incredible to know there are watches that are able to do phone calls etc. We only used to see such things in movies a while back. I wonder which amazing designs people will come up with next.

I think that this is a good product only because it can't get lost as easily as a cellphone does.
I personally wouldn't get one-I agree with Clare and I just imagine it to be more intrusive than convenient-which is also my general view on some technology and also social media. Maybe if I knew more about the watch or actually have one, my view would change-but for now-no thanks.

I think its a bit over the top to be making calls from your watch. People always have their phones on their person these days. People even have their phones on them in the pool ! If you are out for a run and leave it at home ,you have done so for a reason. I see no need for the apple watch...its just another gadget that everyone is going to be putting themselves out of pocket for because its there! In my opinion it is more about consumerism than anything else.

I was considering trading in my no name fitness monitor for an apple watch but it wouldn't be to make or receive calls. My friends apple watch can receive calls and her phone was upstairs on charge - the qualify wasn't that great! I had far too many problems with my FitBit but I still can't seem to justify the amount of what an Apple watch costs. No doubt that they are the leaders in terms of technology!

I must say that I like the bluetooth watch as it is best when travelling. I bought my boyfriend one, not as good as this one but still does the most important parts like phone calls. Very good tool to have.

I have wanted the Apple watch for a long time but I just can't get myself to spend that kind of money on a watch, although I have spent more on quality watches like a Michael Kors. I cannot substantiate buying the Apple watch because I feel that I really wont be using it to it's full ability and most features would be wasted on me. It is about time though that quality phone calls can be made from the watch and received the same way. Technology just continues to blow my mind!

I don't wear a watch, but I do think that this is great! As you said, you can go on a walk and always be able to contact someone if need be - without having to carry a phone. If it wasn't so expensive, I would probably look into buying one, especially for use on weekends when out and about with my 4 year old.

Technology has improved so much over the years. Just imagine how it's going to be in 10 years.

I have to say that I don't really like this watch, I think its bad for people that can find you then they can monitor you whereabouts and then they steel you. Its the same with a Cell phone but still the watch is still not something that I am into.

Nina  said:

It is amazing to see how quickly the apple watch is improving. I don't know if I would ever be willing to spend so much money on a watch. I tend to buy cheap watches so that I can change it every now and again without spending too much, but if you are an exercise fanatic, it will make sense to buy an Apple watch.

Zanell  said:

I have a Fitbit and I love my watch obviously it’s not so great than the Apple watch but for now it works just fine. I will definitely look into it when I want something new. I think you will never be on top of things when it comes to technology.
Each time something different is invented more spectacular than the last one.

I was recently looking at the retail price of Apple Watch Sport silver aluminium case with white sport band and at a price of R6 799 - it is far beyond my means! Though the technological advancements are astounding, I am not sure that the general population of South Africa can afford such? None the less - the abiliy of a watch to make calls is really cool. Is it a novelty though or is the functionality really good?

Celeste  said:

My opinion is I've got the Samsung gear fit and I can also make calls from it and read WhatsApp messages and emails and sms. it is practically the same .
